Chương 4: Chapter 4

Slowly walking up to the room, he had many questions in his mind. "How was she able to slam the door shut with a wave of her hand? Is she… an immortal? But she doesn't seem grand and awe inspiring like in the stories on Earth… And how does that crystal ball test my talent?" By the time all of these questions crossed his mind, he was already standing before the desk. Like all the previous times, Miss Glaze once again waved her hand and the door closed.

"How does this ball work?" Ash decided to take the initiative to speak first. The woman looked surprised but didn't answer his question. "Place your left hand on the ball and close your left eye." All information about immortal cultivation was kept locked down, only accessible to those with the necessary talent. Neither Ash nor his parents knew exactly why people were born with different colored eyes, only knowing that all powerful cultivators had them. No cultivators had two of the same colored eyes. Ash closed his left eye, leaving his red colored right eye open. He placed his hand on the crystal ball. When he did his eye lit up in bright light while the crystal ball started to slowly take on the same colored red as his iris. "Right eye talent, grade 5. Passable. Remove your left hand and place your right hand. Open your left eye this time instead." Ash did as he was told and placed his right hand with his left eye open. Unlike last time, the crystal ball almost immediately changed to the same deep purple as his eye. Miss Glaze immediately rushed closer to the ball with a look of astonishment. "Tenth grade peak talent! Passable! Even only having one eye at peak grade talent is amazing! And it seems you've already gained access to a low quality breathing technique. In three days you must gather back here in order to come with me to Goan City for the annual school selection."

She took out a scroll from her robe and unrolled it. Also taking out a pen, she wrote down information about his talent and then used a stamp signifying the validity of the document. "When you go to choose a school, show them the document. With your left eye peak talent, any school would be happy to accept you." Ash, through all of this had a contemplative expression on his face. "I have a peak tenth grade talent but I don't even know what it means…" He thought. "Once you join a school, you'll be given a technique to unlock the potential of your eyes. Now go." Ash has many unanswered questions but he turned around and left anyways.

Once outside, he ran to where his parents were. "I told you that your son was a genius! Right eye peak 10th grade talent and left eye middle 5th grade talent! I'll be able to join any school in Goan City." The looks on his parents faces were ecstatic. All they ever wanted was for there son to have talent at least a bit better than theirs, instead he was a genius! "Your mother and I couldn't be happier! Come, let's go home to celebrate!"

A few of the people in the crowd nearby had happened to overhear their conversation and were shocked. Peak 10th grade talent and middle 5th grade talent! A genius like that had never come out of the town of Chow. Even in the nearby and larger Goan city that type of talent would only come about once in 100 years!

Walking back to their home from the Mayors house, Ash couldn't be happier. After seeing the smiles on his parents faces and the warmth in their eyes, he they couldn't be prouder of him. "I've finally managed to accomplish one of my goals." He thought. "The next thing I need to do is find a good school to train at so I can become strong enough to give my family a better life!"

After arriving home, Ash helped his mother with lunch while his father set the table so they could eat. That day they all sat together and laughed and reminisced about his toddler years and growing up. They were the definition of a happy family.

Unfortunately, time flies by fast when your having fun. Those three days went by in a blink, and now it was the morning that he had to go and meet Miss Glaze along with the other children that have decent talent. "We will have to say goodbye to you here son. I'm afraid that if we walk you down there than we wont be able to keep it together. You'll be gone for a long time and I know you'll be fine, but well miss you so, so, much." "I understand. I love you both." As Ash finished speaking, he turned around to walk out of his home. On the corner of his eye could faintly be seen a glistening tear drop. It was brief, and it was gone before he walked out of his house. He came out with a look of solemn resolve, unfitting for someone his age. "That is the last time I'll allow myself to shed a tear. For now on, I have to be strong for myself and even stronger for my family." It seems his developing talent for thinking out loud would fallow him to Goan city as well…

As he was on his way to the mayor's house, he noticed a lot of odd stares directed at him. There were also many people that waved at him or come to him and introduced themselves. After asking around, it seems that everyone had found out about his talent from someone who overheard him talking to his parents.

When he arrived at the mayor's house Miss Glaze was standing near the same hut they had the test in three days before. Next to her was the mayor who had a very respectful look on his face. Off to the side were the other children who had passable talent. At first glance there was about 20. Out of the hundreds of children tested only 20 or so had passable talent. As Ash walked up the other children noticed him and came to greet him.

One girl that stood out more than the others came forward and stopped right in front of him. She had long, strawberry blonde hair that was tied into pigtails. She had two eyes of the same color which is less common that different colored eyes. They were a striking green that can only be described as the color of envy. Which is ironic because unlike how the other children look at him, she had no envy in her gaze. "You're the only one here with talent comparable to mine." She said.

She had a nasally voice that sounded really annoying. Contained in that voice was a strong pride of her talent. "I already know your talent, but can you guess mine? Upper middle 7th grade talent in both eyes." Having heard that, Ash was indeed surprised. Having 7th grade talent in one eye was already enough to make people envy you let alone having it in both eyes. "My name is Ash Greycloak. It's a pleasure to meet you. And yours?" He introduced himself and clasped his hands. "My name is Emily Silvertree and it is your pleasure." Hearing her rude response, Ash chose to just smile and ignore it.

"Everyone gather around!" Miss Glaze said. "We shall have a quick breakfast at the mayors house and then we have a long journey to attend to." All the children as well as the mayor and Miss Glaze walked to the mayors house. "I can't wait to get to Goan city!" Once again Ash had spoken aloud.
