Chương 28: The quest 2

A man was dodging left and right, constantly swerving from the blows of his attacker. Claws grew from the defender's hand as he clawed his attacker.

"You grew quite stronger from the curse, impressive," said Gideon Flammenwerfer, keeping away from the bladed hands.

But Lance's speed increased and he cut Gideon's hands.

"lucky," thought Gideon, dodging to the side to dodge another slash. Stretching out his hands, Gideon uttered, "Burst."

Gideon's blood on Lance's hand burst into flames. The flames burned off the skin on Lance's hand, leaving the flesh exposed.

Gideon then controlled the blood on his wound and splashed it on Lance's face. The flames went out, and Lance fell to the ground in agony.

Lance was standing against the wall, panting in pain from the wounds he had received. A new flame appeared in Gideon's palm. "Blow"

The flames engulfed Lance's body and melted the surrounding walls, sending sparks everywhere.

"The fact you can even stand after those blows means you have potential. Now fight me harder," said Gideon as he flicked his wrist and ignited his blood on Lance's body, burning him to the core.

At that moment, Lance let out a loud groan from the pain that he was feeling.

"You are indeed worthy of carrying the curse," said Gideon, but it's not enough.

Gideon flicked his wrist again and activated his blood again. "Inferno"

A fire exploded across Lance's body and the surrounding walls. Sparks flew everywhere as the flames consumed Lance, eventually collapsing onto the ground.

Gideon walked over to Lance, only to step back in haste as a claw swiped that location.

Lance stood up and looked at Gideon, grinning like a demon. His face had transformed, and he now possessed the aura of a veritable beast.

"I knew it!" said Gideon.

A new flame appeared and burnt the ground in front of Lance.

"Another one… I didn't think you could handle any-" said Gideon, but stopped halfway as he watched Lance walk through the flames. His wounds heal slowly and accurately.

"How!? How are you still standing!?"

Lance didn't reply. His image blurred and flashed right in front of Gideon. His figure expanded in Gideon's eyes as his hands clawed toward his head.

"You…" thought Gideon in surprise

Then there was dust that covered the whole stadium.

After a brief time, Gideon could see Lance again.

Lance's body was charred, his eyes were red, and his hair was white. His claws inch away from Gideon's eye.

Then Lance's transformation deactivated itself at the last moment. Gideon held Lance's shoulders before he fell to the ground, his mind still replaying the scene.

"That surge of power! How did you get that much power in that short amount of time? I've never seen such a surge of power in mid-battle." thought Gideon. "Could it be that his power gets stronger the more he gets injured and in a rage?"

However, that wasn't all.

"This isn't possible… how is his body regenerating so quickly!?"

Lance was still breathing hard, his body covered with blood, and they had smeared his clothes with black blood stains. But the wounds were already closing, and the scars also vanished.

"I don't believe it…" said Gideon as he turned to see Lance standing up straight and looking at Gideon with a grin.

"Why don't we fight again to confirm this theory?" asked Lance.

"I guess it wouldn't hurt to do that," muttered Gideon.

"Good choice," said Lance as he disappeared with a flash of light.

Max and the crew walked with Des. Turns out he was guarding something in this forest even after his death.

"He was protecting what?" asked Garrett in a low voice

"I don't know, maybe some kind of treasure or something," replied Max

"I can hear you!" said Des, looking at both of them.

"I guess this treasure must be very important to Mring," asked Krista.

"Don't probe me, do your task and simply leave. This matter holds no relevance to you," replied Des, then turned away from them and started walking ahead of them.

"We aren't here to spy on you," said Max, following behind Des

"I did not ask. I simply do not trust the secrets of my empire with a bunch of sell swords… elite yes, but sell-swords regardless."

"We won't tell anyone, promise," replied Enora, waving her hands.

"I doubt that, but I suppose I can't blame you for being curious," replied Des.

"Yeah, we can understand that," said Eric.

"Well, it's not anything that would interest you," said Des, walking ahead of the group.

"Let's forget about that. Does the current emperor know you are technically… alive?" asked Max, catching up to him.

"That boy knows, but never comes. He despises me for my decision and I do not blame him, but I'll make the same choice regardless," said Des, with the temperament of a leader.

"It hurts you, doesn't it… his hate for you," said Eric, butting into the conversation.

"Yes, it does, but as long as he knows it was for the greater good… then that's enough for me!" said Des with nostalgia. "So, what's going on in the empire? Who are our enemies? Are we in any crisis?"

"When are we not? Towns are getting destroyed! The undead have their city! Dungeons have skyrocketed in power!" replied Garrett.

"Also, what is the deal with this place, anyway? There is something weird about it," asked Max.

"An emperor should strike when a problem shows at its infancy, and I paid for that with my life and soul. My father always told me we should take care of problems before they grow. Unfortunately, that was my downfall."

"How do you know it wasn't a fluke? That you didn't strike down an innocent problem?" said Enora in a questioning tone.

"Experience," said Des with the utmost confidence.

The group continued walking, and soon they saw figures in the distance.

"What is that?" asked Garrett.

"I do not care. I do not allow trespassers here!"

Des walked forward, but suddenly he felt something. It felt like if he goes towards those beings, he will get corrupted and turned into one of 'them."

"No, I can't go there, it is too… evil," said Des as he retreated quickly.

"What is wrong?" asked Enora, in confusion.

"I cannot explain it, but I'm not letting those things touch me!"

"It's because you are a spirit, technically an undead. If you contact them, you will be 'assimilated'," said Max as sure formed on his hands.

"Wait, those are undead?" asked Des.

"It seems so," said Eric, with veins forming.

"It's a shame I can't do anything, but I do not worry. I have fought you enough to know how experienced each of you is," said Des, jumping onto a tree.

The group nodded and leaped through the trees in separate directions. Encircling the undead creatures and getting into a favorable position for the battle.

But little did they know. It was not only the undead. A man in a cloak opened his mouth, revealing fangs.
