I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. Rachel, a former CIA operative? The revelation spun my world out of control. I thought I'd trusted her.
"How could you?" I demanded, my voice shaking. Rachel's expression turned grim.
"I was assigned to protect you, Ethan," she explained. "Your parents' research was too valuable to fall into the wrong hands. I've been keeping you safe all these years."
"Safe?" I repeated, incredulous. "You've been lying to me. Manipulating me." Rachel's eyes pleaded for understanding.
"I did what I had to do," she said. "To keep you alive. Your parents' research is dangerous, Ethan. It can change the course of human history."
I scoffed. "And you're just trying to protect me from the truth?" Rachel's face twisted in anguish.
"No, Ethan. I'm trying to protect the world from those who would misuse this technology." Her words hung in the air like a challenge.
Suddenly, the door burst open. Nova stood in the entrance, a gun trained on Rachel.
"Ethan, get away from her," Nova warned. "She's not who you think she is."
Rachel smiled wryly. "You're just in time to join the party, Nova."
