Seeing the frightened and uneasy expression on Leo, Cain and Raikou seemed to have caught onto something.
No employer would keep an idle person around, so working was only natural, especially when there was a salary involved.
In the afternoon, Yan changed into his uniform and took Cain and Raikou to the base of the Bell Tower.
"Do you know how to become stronger?" Yan asked first.
"Battle."
Cain and Raikou shouted almost simultaneously.
Yan nodded; no wonder the two of them were so outstanding.
"You're right, discussing tactics on paper and the like is all superficial. To become stronger, you must battle, battle continuously, and integrate battle into your blood."
Yan couldn't help but get excited as he spoke, "So, in Ecruteak Gym's special training, there are no fancy things, just battles. See this nine-story Brass Tower? This is your battlefield."
"Here? Just those Ghost-type Pokémon?"
Raikou looked somewhat disdainful; his Machop's Foresight move had indeed made his journey through the Bell Tower smooth.
Yan seemed to see through Raikou's thoughts and laughed, "If you treat this place like the Bell Tower, you'll be in big trouble. Inside, each floor has two powerful Pokémon leading twenty Ghost-type Pokémon in battle. They were all trained by generations of Gym Leaders and are well-disciplined and strong. Each floor is stronger than the last, you two put together, have only four Pokémon. Challenging this won't be easy."
"Four against twenty-two?" Cain said.
"Exactly, you will come here to challenge, every day at noon. If you fail, leave and don't waste time inside. Train on your own until 5 PM. If you fail, continue the next day. Discuss your strategies among yourselves. For every floor you pass, I'll give you a TM's as a reward."
Having said that, Yan urged Cain and Raikou to enter.
Ditto and Gastly were on Cain's left and right, while Machop and Duskull followed Raikou closely.
The two, with their four Pokémon, entered the first floor of the Brass Tower.
Two Haunters, leading twenty Gastly, seemed to be waiting for Cain and Raikou's arrival.
"Since we know it's Ghost-type Pokémon, use Foresight quickly."
Cain reminded Raikou to take the initiative.
"Understood, Machop, use Foresight."
Raikou's Machop focused intently, preparing to use Foresight.
The two Haunters laughed with a "Hehehe" sound, as if mocking them.
Four Shadow Punches shot out like bullets towards Machop.
"Ditto, cover!"
Cain reacted quickly. Ditto was a Normal type and wasn't afraid of Ghost-type attacks.
Ditto leaped from Cain's shoulder and blocked two of the Shadow Punches.
"Lick."
"Shadow Sneak."
With two more Shadow Punches, Cain and Raikou had no choice but to send out Gastly and Duskull to defend.
Gastly's long tongue lashed out towards the Shadow Punch, while Duskull's shadow suddenly extended to wrap around the other Shadow Punch.
The level gap made their efforts futile.
The Shadow Punches easily dispersed Duskull's shadow and knocked back Gastly's long tongue.
In just a moment, the two Shadow Punches knocked Machop to the ground.
Twenty Gastlys surrounded them.
"Go all out! Gastly, use swipe with Lick, Ditto transform into Haunter!"
Foresight had not succeeded, and Machop's fighting moves were almost useless.
"Duskull, use Foresight."
Surprise!
Cain had almost forgotten that Duskull and the Banette family were among the Ghost-types capable of using the Foresight move.
However, as Yan had said, these Pokémon were well-trained. Cain could tell that these Pokémon had not yet used their full strength. Sometimes they deliberately slowed down, seemingly waiting for Cain and his team to make their move.
Even so, their current strength was still insufficient to break the deadlock.
Cain's Gastly extended its tongue and spun its body, hoping to find a breakthrough to change the situation.
Raikou's Duskull's eyes shone brightly, with Detect ready to make its mark.
However, things didn't go as planned.
Thick, terrifying phantoms enveloped the surroundings, like a smoky fog that was difficult to describe or understand.
Neither Gastly's Lick nor Duskull's Foresight could penetrate these phantom illusions, disappearing without a trace.
At this point, Ditto had already transformed successfully, continuously releasing Shadow Ball into the illusions.
"It's impossible! How come Foresight can't break through the illusion?" Raikou felt agitated.
"It's not an illusion." Cain said calmly.
"Not an illusion? Then what is it?" Raikou was puzzled.
"Night Shade."
Cain was also surprised. A common move, under the onslaught of a group of Gastly, had such immense power. This must have been the result of long-term training. Perhaps he could learn a lot of tactics from this.
The Night Shade created by twenty Gastly formed an entire fortress of illusions, slowly closing in on them.
Their side's combat power was inherently weak. How could they resist the combined efforts of twenty Gastly? All their ultimate moves were used, only slightly delaying the contraction speed of the Night Shade.
Finally, a mass of shadows covered Cain, Raikou, and their four Pokémon, completely draining the Pokémon's stamina.
However, Cain and Raikou were unharmed, as trainers were not targeted in this scenario.
Cain sighed, recalling his Ditto and Gastly, and left. Today's challenge was a failure.
"That's it? We're leaving?"
Raikou was still somewhat confused.
Cain and Raikou came out, and Yan was already waiting for them.
"How was it? What did you think?"
Cain replied, "Strong."
"Too strong," Raikou shook his head.
"However, the fact that you two were able to hold on for so long is already impressive. Now, you need to find your weaknesses, train to overcome them, and continue challenging. You can challenge once a day."
Yan finished speaking and left with a wave of his hand.
"What should we do now? Do we really have to listen to him?" asked Raikou.
Cain glanced sideways, "I don't think improving our strength is a bad thing."
He took out Ditto and Gastly.
"We've just experienced despair, haven't we?" said Cain.
Ditto and Gastly nodded.
"In the future, there will be even more desperate situations, so we must become stronger. Gastly, go to the Bell Tower for solo training. The Ghost-type Pokémon there are weaker, so try to learn Night Shade before coming back."
Gastly was indeed in a difficult position right now, with no skills and unable to utilize its advantages. The only way forward was to accumulate experience and learn more practical skills.
"Ditto, you've already transformed into a Haunter, so your task is to train your speed. The tactic is to hold off two Haunters while we deal with the other Gastlys. I'll have a training method for you in a short while."
Cain walked towards the Brass Tower, and the transformed Haunter followed closely.
"Um, what about me?" Raikou asked as he caught up.
"Your task is to quickly use Foresight, and train however you like."
Cain waved his hand dismissively, as not everyone could watch his unique Pokémon training methods.
