Pearl woke up and looked at the empty bed. Sebastian had been working all night. They were set to visit America in a few days, but Pearl wasn't sure how that would happen now.
"Good morning." Pearl said to little Alex as he cooed and looked adoringly at her.
She picked him up and walked over to the rocker in the corner to feed him breakfast. He was had the mildest temperament of the three and rarely cried or fussed. He was always smiling and cooing and slept well for an infant. The polar opposite of Christian and his, strong willed, stubborn nature and Isla with her wild and carefree trouble making tendencies. She was a little gypsy, a spirited and often distracted girl. She was one you had to watch.
After finishing his breakfast, Alex drifted back to sleep and Pearl walked him down the hall to the nursery.
"Good morning, Tia." She said to her nanny. "Mommy!" Christian hollered as he ran into her legs. She handed Alex to Tia and picked him up.
"Let's have breakfast, shall we?" Pearl said to him.
"Yes pwease." He said in his cute little voice.
"Where is your sister?" Pearl asked.
Christian looked at the door to the wall-in closet and pointed.
Pearl walked over and opened the door to find a trail of markers and crayons leading to a corner at the back. "Isla!" Pearl cried out. She had doodled all over the wall with the crayons and markers along with her face and arms.
Pearl looked at her, her little face turning from a proud smile to a frown, tears welling. "I sowry." She said in her little voice.
"Isla, it's such a lovely drawing. So beautiful." She said, kneeling down. Isla smiled as a big tear fell down her cheek.
"I think we will keep this here and frame it." Pearl said. She picked Isla up and hugged her.
"I love you, little wild fairy." She said. Isla's little arms cling to her and she said back, "Wub you Momma."
Later that afternoon, Sebastian found Pearl in the library reading.
"So, I was just in the kids' closet looking for Isla's shoes and I happened upon a lovely abstract drawing about two feet from the floor, framed by exquisite mahogany wood and signed "Isla, aged one and half" in your handwriting." Sebastian said with a smile. "What an extraordinary piece of art."
Pearl smiled and looked up from her book. "Indeed." She said. He knelt down and looked into her eyes.
"I can't believe how wonderful you are, as a mother and wife. I thank god everyday for you." He said, kissing her hand.
"I have news. I am going to Pakistan tomorrow. We need t work out some things there." Sebastian said, looking down.
"What about America?" Pearl asked.
"I want you to go. I want you to still be a presence there. I will fly to Washington DC and meet you the day we are supposed to visit the White House. But the west coast tour and gala will be you on your own, unfortunately. I'm so sorry, Pearl." He said.
"It is ok. I've got this." Pearl said. "Just stay safe and remember to make it up to me when you come back." She said with a smile. He hugged her and stood up. "I've got to get my things together. I love you." He said.
"I love you, too." She said back.
