"Please, a round of applause for the great magician, Giovanni Zatara!" The announcer yelled as a purple smoke with glitters covered the stage and then it was cleared by a gust of wind, with Giovanni Zatara standing on the stage now.
It must have been impressive, for the children and the people who didn't know true magic. For Zatanna Zatara? It was almost embarrassing.
It wasn't like she wasn't proud of her father's work, she was. Being a stage magician and a superhero at the same time was hard work and her father had managed to do both without neglecting her. It was incredible.
But the knowledge of what he could really do with magic, it made the glittery smoke he used for his entrance downright silly. What was the point of it?
Not that she would ever say that to her father's face, the lecture about classics he had given her last time she did was still in her mind. There were nights it started to play in her mind and stopped her from getting proper sleep.
"It might be rude to do so, but I assume that you are bored of this." A voice came from her behind so she slightly turned her head around to get a proper look and damn, mama likes.
He was one of the most handsome men she had ever seen, with sophisticated features and amber like eyes. He was wearing a green suit with a black shirt. And best of all, he looked only a year or two older than her!
"I... wouldn't say it's boring, it just isn't anything new." She said with a smile.
"What about you? What do you think of the show?" She asked as she placed her chin on her hand and her elbow on the railings.
"I think... it's funny." He said with a smirk, it looked somewhat arrogant but... not really in a bad way? But still...
"Funny?" She asked with a frown. No matter how much she may not like the show, or how hot this guy was, if he made fun of her father's performance she would hurt him.
"A man with magical power to turn the audience's insides out, to warp the reality itself around his finger. And he's pulling a rabbit out of a hat." He said with a shake of his head. She wanted to be angry at his words, but the fact that her father had literally just pulled a rabbit out of his hat kind of made it kinda hard. He was also right, her father did have the power to do what he had said.
"I guess you have a point mister... I'm sorry, I don't believe I got your name." Zatanna said with a chuckle which was replied with another chuckle before he answered.
"My name is Victor. Victor Stark." Now named Victor said as he offered his hand for a shake and Zatanna took it. But before she could say anything; a bright light from the stage took her attention and she could see, much to her dread, confusion in her father's eyes.
This wasn't a part of the show.
"Using your talents to entertain these plebeians? Da Vinci must be rolling in his grave over this disgrace." A voice came from the light and when it dimmed, it revealed a man with fu manchu mustache wearing a purple robe and a purple... cone(?) thingy on his head.
"Let me, Felix Faust, show them the true power of magic!" He yelled with his arms raised high and then arcs of purple lightning started to come out of his hands! Making all the spectators try to run away in fright.
This was bad. This was really really bad! Felix Faust, she remembered her father talk about him once or twice. An immortal sorcerer who had been alive for centuries and had done unspeakable things for power with the use of the darkest arts of magic. To the point it was recorded in history how he had once made a deal with a devil.
She believed that her father could defeat him, her father was amazing, but when one added the panicking civilians running around that he would need to protect?
She needed to do something!
"Quite a dramatic fellow isn't he?" But before she could, her thought process was interrupted by Victor who was looking towards the fight with... boredom?!
"Shouldn't you be, I don't know, running away?" She asked hesitantly, that was what civilians tended to do in a battle between two supers.
"Not really. It's just Felix Faust, meaning he will fail anyway." He said with a shrug and Zatanna could feel her eyes widening. If Faust had actually heard that...
"Who dares?!" Oh, he had. And was looking towards them, this was bad.
"Not like it's wrong." Victor said with a smile, why did all the good looking guys had to be idiots?!
"I mean, seriously, you have been alive since five thousand BC and you have never had a proper victory have you." He said with a smirk. Still, five thousand BC? If he was right then Faust was far older than they had thought. And if so how did Victor knew it?
"Honestly, isn't it about time you finally retired and disappeared from the memories? It might actually work for your image." Victor said before throwing his head back and laughing.
Now even her father was looking at Victor like he was insane, not that she could actually blame him. Though it did create an opening where Felix Faust managed to fly away from her father and towards them with both his hands and his eyes glowing purple with magic.
"You little shit! When I am done with you they will... tell... your... ta... le..." Zatanna couldn't believe her eyes. Her brain told them to check what they were seeing but they still sent the same image to her brain.
Felix Faust had stopped in the air, his expression frozen in an enraged snarl. Not that it meant much when he wasn't moving, even the magical lightning around him had stopped moving!
"Hmm, guess the old man needs to take a breath." She looked at Victor with wide eyes, his smirk could probably find in a dictionary under the words 'smug' and she could swear that she saw his sclera shine with an emerald glow around his amber eyes.
"Now then, shall we continue our conversation." He put his hand on his fist and his elbow on the rail and smiled at her. For the second time since seeing Victor for the first time, Zatanna had only one thought.
Mama really likes.
