Because the poisonous dragon had been residing in this area, its noxious fumes had severely polluted the surrounding air and water.
As a result, the nearby villages had pooled their resources to commission the adventurers' guild to send someone capable of dealing with the dragon.
"Village Chief, do you think the adventurer sent by the guild can really handle the poisonous dragon? Our village's water supply is completely exhausted. The poisoned river and well water can't be used to irrigate our fields. If this continues, we'll soon be unable to survive."
"Yes, Village Chief, didn't we go too far this time? The lord already provided sufficient gold coins. Why did we lie about the difficulty of the mission? This will not only offend the adventurers' guild but also delay the elimination of the dragon."
In the village, two young men looked resentfully at the elderly village chief. Because their village was the largest among the surrounding ones, they had been tasked with issuing the commission to the adventurers' guild.
It had been the village chief's idea to lie about the mission's difficulty.
"Are you fools? That dragon is still a dragon, even if it's a subspecies. The adventurers' guild might not have someone who can defeat it, and if they do, such adventurers must be extremely rare.
With the little money we have, we can't afford to pay them. So I did this for the sake of our village.
If the dragon issue isn't resolved, we'll have to relocate, which will also cost money. Without retaining some funds, how will we survive the difficult days after relocating?"
The young men nodded in understanding after hearing the village chief's explanation. However, another voice interjected into their conversation.
"I see, keeping enough funds for future plans. As the village chief, it's commendable that you care for your villagers this much. But have you considered the fate of the adventurers who accepted your false commission?
They thought they were dealing with a five-meter poisonous lizard, only to find a fifteen-meter subspecies dragon. With the wrong information, their only option would be to die. Do your villagers' lives matter more than those of the adventurers?"
Gin had initially thought the villages had lied about the mission difficulty due to lack of funds. He had come to inform them that the dragon had been defeated. But after overhearing the conversation, he was furious.
These villagers didn't lack money; they just didn't trust the adventurers could defeat the dragon. They had issued the commission to appease the local lord while secretly planning to relocate the village.
If not for his strength, Gin himself might have been a victim of their deceit, ending up as dragon food.
"And who are you to interfere with our village's matters? Adventurers should know the risks. Besides, we didn't force them to accept the commission," one of the young men retorted, moving to drive Gin and Yosuke away.
But Gin effortlessly sent the two burly youths flying with a single sweep of his hand.
"Who are you? Our village has no enmity with you," the village chief asked, recognizing Gin was not someone to be trifled with.
"I don't like meddling in others' affairs, but I'm the adventurer who took your misleading commission. I thought I was hunting a giant lizard, only to find a dragon. Now, do you think this matter involves me or not?"
The village chief's face darkened upon realizing they had inadvertently revealed their deceitful intentions in front of the wrong person.
"Village Chief, the... the dragon... it's been killed!" One of the young men, attempting to get up, noticed the massive corpse behind Gin. The sight of the bisected dragon stunned him.
The village chief quickly approached, his expression shifting from shock to contrition upon seeing the dead dragon. Bowing deeply, he addressed Gin and Yosuke.
"Thank you, esteemed adventurers, for eliminating the poisonous dragon and ridding our village and neighboring ones of this scourge. Regarding the reward, we can discuss it further. Please accept our sincere apologies and allow us to explain."
Realizing the strength of those who had killed the dragon and dragged its massive corpse here, the village chief's attitude changed drastically.
He respectfully invited Gin and Yosuke to discuss matters further.
