Chương 34: Epilogue

Rimuru spectated, hovering midair, as Tanya flew at near untrackable speeds to the north. Quickly following her was most likely the 'Being X' that he had been warned by her about. While her chances of success had been significantly improved thanks to Great Sage, there was nothing further he could do to assist with the duel. It was down to Tanya to handle her part, but Rimuru still had to handle his.

All around him, the fury of war had died down. What once was a mighty portion of the American army, capable of capturing entire cities, had been reduced to little more than fertilizer for the forest where they had once invaded. All that was left was one portion of Falmuth's army, one that had the special role of being his sacrifices in his pathway to becoming a greater being, left surrounding the Falmuth camp. Sure, the American soldiers would work just fine as well, but he could hardly blame them for their actions. Bound to follow the will of Falmuth, the soldiers were hardly to blame, forced to march through lands they sought not to trample and to murder weakened civilians they sought not to kill. The knights of Falmuth, however, had every ability to refuse orders, yet here they had come anyway. They would die.

Rimuru didn't know if an afterlife existed or not, and if one did he was unsure if those that became sacrifices for his evolution would ever see it. In the case that they wouldn't, Rimuru thought to be merciful to the American soldiers who had been summoned to this world, they had suffered enough already. Hell wouldn't plague them, only eternal peace.

Rimuru carefully applied a barrier around the Kingdom of Falmuth's primary army of knights, akin to the one the army had once placed upon his people. No magic would work within the barrier, and nobody would be able to escape. Their fates were sealed.

Rimuru placed the replication of Shizue's mask on his face, now cracked from his excessive use, as he suppressed the rage once again boiling inside of him. This was for them, after all. All he needed was a few thousand dead, and everything would return to how it was. The scars would remain, but the wounds would heal with time.

Rimuru raised his hands, countless small yet precise and organized, perfectly spherical droplets of water appearing scattered throughout the air of their encampment. The light of the sun reflected through them, and at his command, it would focus into beams of light, granting them a quick and merciful death.

"Your god cannot save you here… MEGGIDO!"

King Edmarius, the mighty and once proud King of Falmuth, sat in full armor at his desk. Surrounded by his top military officials, some enslaved from another world via summoning rituals and others willingly serving the country they were born in, they were some of his closest confidants. Emphasis on were. In front of him was a map displaying the crude details of the Jura Forest around them, with the city of Tempestia right at the center.

The King's once debatably majestic and proud figure was now riddled with stress and sweat. His complexion made him look ill, with pale skin and messy, greasy hair akin to sick men. Leaning against the desk in front of him, he placed his glasses on once more to read the details of the map better as he did his best to hide his growing anxiety, failing miserably and knocking over a few markers on the map that indicated the known locations of Tempest's armies before scrambling to put them back.

One of his officers, a man named Keith, stepped forward and explained, "The enemy has made a breakthrough. They took crystals B, C, and D, and are advancing towards Crystal A, located on the road to Dwargon. Reports from Falmuth indicate that they're at the northern city border of our capital, with Blumund's forces approaching from the east and Dwargon's from the west."

The king watched as the general moved and added several markers to places on the map as he explained where Tempest's armies were. In summary, they were everywhere, and there wasn't much they could do to stop it. They had no human in their camp that could annihilate everything all at once.

Waving his hand, Edmarius muttered, "If Rerugen attacks, everything will be alright…"

Rerugen and the Aerial Mage Battalion under his command were their primary hopes of pulling through. They were the elites among the elites within Falmuth's newly expanded and modernized army, capable of decimating hundreds within minutes. If there were any people who stood a decent chance at repelling Tempest's attacks and allowing for a withdrawal back to Falmuth, it would be them.

The generals and advisors went silent, nervously glancing around the room as General Kieth muttered, "My Lord… Rerugen…"

As the Kieth hesitated, the second general, this one a loyal noble to the crown named John, continued, "Rerugen has defected. The attack didn't take place."

The king sat in silence, his hand coming up to his glasses, shaking vigorously as he slowly took them off, placing them back on the table. After a few moments of further silence, he spoke, "The following stay here: Rayheim, Razen, Kieth, and John."

The room went silent as the dozens of officers left the room, leaving only the four ordered to stay, who stood in silence, staring down at their not-so-royal King.

Edmarius slammed his fist against the table, yelling, "That was an order! Rerugen's attack was an order! How dare you ignore my orders?! Is this what it has come to?! The military has been lying to me! Even the church!" The king stood up, slouching over as he continued to holler, "The generals are no more than a bunch of disloyal cowards!"

In the midst of King Edmarius' ramblings, Kieth interjected, "My Lord, I can't permit you to insult the soldiers-"

"-Cowards, traitors, and incompetents!" The King continued shouting, waving his glasses at Kieth.

Kieth again muttered, "My Lord, this is outrageous-"

"The generals are the scum of the Kingdom of Falmuth! No sense of honor! You call yourself general because you spent years at the academy, where you only learnt to use knife and fork! For years, the church obstructed me! All you ever did is thwart me! I should've had all the high-ranking priests kicked out of government as Blumund did!"

The king sat down yet again, rocking in his chair, visibly distressed as his voice toned down, though remained filled with anger, "I never went to any academy. But I got this far on my own… Traitors! I've been betrayed and deceived from the start! Such enormous betrayal of the Kingdom of Falmuth! But all these traitors will pay with their own blood. They will drown in their own blood!"

The king slouched down once more as he silently muttered, the others watching on, "My orders have been ignored. How can I be a king under these circumstances? It's over. The war is lost. But if you think this means that I'll leave my encampment, you're wrong. I'd rather stab a sword through my chest. Do what you want."

The king waved his hand as those around him slowly filtered out of the room. He sat in silence for a few moments, eventually standing up and staring at his sword leaning against the table. He picked it up and gazed at his reflection in the shine of the blade. His lord had offered him greatness, victory, an empire, all that he could ever want! Yet here he stood, surrounded and out of options, losing one pawn after another. His hopes of sitting as a mighty emperor above all by the will of the lord had been utterly crushed, decimated into smithereens. His death was inevitable, but he wouldn't give the damn monsters and traitors the satisfaction of killing him in their names of 'justice.'

He would go out on his own terms.

Beams of light tore through the air, without a sound but far more deadly than a shockwave. What was just moments ago strange floating droplets of water shot out light in all directions as each one pierced through the skulls and bodies of all the soldiers in the encampment, ending the lives of thousands in a flash.

In a matter of seconds, soldiers began dropping like flies as mass panic overtook the men. Some attempted to flee from the encampment, others attempted to hide behind barrels and tents, or even behind the bodies of their fallen comrades. However, all of them still failed before the might of Meggido. After several seconds of onslaught, the beams finally stopped, giving the surviving soldiers a brief moment to breathe. They dared not look up, fearing the worst that they would be next.

Meanwhile, Rimuru stared up as he heard Great Sage speak to him;

«Unique Skill [Merciless] has been obtained.»

'I suppose that's fitting… But isn't that Tanya's skill?'

«The individual Tanya did not have the skill when the soul corridor was created, indicating that she likely lost or sacrificed the skill at some point.»

'I see… Well, do we have enough souls yet?'

«More souls are still required to begin the Harvest Festival.»

'Well, I suppose we might as well use that skill, I doubt I'll have many opportunities after this…'

Raising his arm into the sky, Rimuru cast Merciless upon the encampment as all those without a will to fight had their souls taken, massive glowing orbs of purple and blue appearing out of their collapsing bodies whilst their souls were brought to Rimuru. Nothing stood in the skill's way, nothing could.

'Well, that's merciless alright.'

Rimuru slowly descended down to the center of the camp where the largest tent resided. Inside was the highest command of Falmuth, the few individuals Rimuru wanted to retrieve alive, mostly for intelligence-gathering purposes. Hovering down in front of the camp, he declared to its occupants, "You all have two options, come out and surrender, or stay in there and die. Your choice!"

In truth, Rimuru only needed a handful of high-ranking officials to get political information from, along with a few other notable individuals, like the King and high-ranking members of the church for other purposes Tanya had wanted for. Everyone else he had no problem with killing. Fairly quickly, however, many men flooded outside, bowing and prostrating themselves before him as he noticed the absence of the king.

Landing down on his feet, Rimuru prepared to head inside to hunt down the King, however, he was hit with a sudden wave of exhaustion.

'What the-?'

«The conditions have been met - the Harvest Festival has begun»

'A-Already…? C-Can't it wait… a… bit…'

«The Harvest Festival cannot be halted once it has begun»

Rimuru sighed, whispering, "R-Ranga!"

The giant direwolf was quick to leap out of his shadow, landing on his paws in front of him, terrifying the men still alive as he wagged his tail eagerly, "Yes, master?"

"Take me back to Tempest… Quickly…" Rimuru ordered drowsily.

"And what about the survivors, Master?" Ranga inquired, glancing at the scared men.

Rimuru drowsily swayed from side to side, collapsing into slime form as Ranga was quick to catch him with his horns, "Don't worry about them…, I'll get someone else to deal with… them."

Casting a magical circle in front of Ranga, one few recognized, the circle glowed a deep black color as Rimuru waved his hand and empowered it with his remaining magicules, "I offer all the bodies in this camp… Come out demon… I have food for you…"

The magical circle began to radiate power, the corpses all around the camp simultaneously glowing and flying into the portal as three demons, donned in black clothing with night-black hair, appeared kneeling before him.

The demon in the front, clearly the strongest, had a single red stripe in his hair, his eyes black where there should've been white with deep crimson red eyes. In fact, in terms of appearance alone, he appeared almost identical to Tanya in many ways, although Rimuru had no time to fret over it now. The others seemed powerful in their own right, but not quite enough to compare to the centermost demon.

"My, the birth of a demon lord, what a wonderful feeling… May I serve you from now on?" The demon in front questioned with a smile.

Rimuru, in his drowsiness, simply waved his hand, "Prove yourself useful to me… or something… Gather all the survivors here, take them back to Tempest… If they resist, kill them unless they're of a high rank, then you can disable them…"

The demon stood with a polite bow to the slime, "I shall not disappoint you, my lord."

"Yeah… yeah… whatever… Ranga, take me home…"

Ranga nodded, "Yes, master!", as he swiftly turned and began running towards Tempestia at a rapid pace, leaving the Demons to handle things at the camp.

Having received orders to withdraw to either Tempestia or Veldoria, everyone was swift to gather in the center of town as preparations had to be made for their masters' glorious return. Their victory had been as grand as it was swift, and though stragglers no doubt remained and were fleeing deeper into the forest, they became the problems of the dryads and monsters within the forest itself, not them. If any somehow managed to escape the Jura Forest alive, they likely earned it.

Weiss sat around with the 203rd as he had managed to fairly easily convince Benimaru of their origins through some codewords and the like, thus allowing them to join Tempest's own mage corps. Despite that, they remained under the watchful eye of several guards nonetheless, mostly as a precaution should their soul-binding spells activate. Allies or not, they would remain under surveillance until either Lord Rimuru or Tanya removed their chains.

Most of the town was noticeably on edge as the 'Words of the World,' a voice that seemed to inform individuals of things like obtaining skills, evolutions, and in this case, an evolution to a Demon Lord, echoed throughout the city. First was the announcement of Rimuru's success, then mere moments later, Tanya's.

The city practically erupted into celebrations before the final preparations were finally kick-started, citizens cheering for their leaders' advancements. Stronger leaders meant greater safety after all, and their leaders more than deserved it after annihilating most of the enemy. Ranga rushed in at rapid speeds before long, carrying an unconscious Rimuru on his back, carrying him over to the center of town where the Kijin were quick to wrap him up in blankets and place him upon an altar.

After sitting in worry at the city's edge waiting for Tanya, he noticed someone approaching the edge of the barrier. Who approached appeared to be a woman with long snow-white hair and deep crimson eyes, taller than any lady he had ever seen. In her arms, however, was Tanya, albeit significantly different from the last time he had seen her. Her hair now a brilliant silver, and her body partially beat up, no doubt a result of her fight with that 'Being X'.

Though she was slightly injured, she was definitely alive, proving that she had been victorious against their most deadly enemies. Also in her hands was the even more beat-up Viktoriya, though with two pairs of large wings on her back that seemed like they were supposed to glow, but didn't.

The woman strolled through the barriers as if they were nothing, silently carrying the two to the center of town as none dared question her, her aura intensely imposing on all of her surroundings. Whatever or whoever this being was, they were no doubt one of the strongest he had met so far, and that was saying something ever since he had traveled to this world.

Benimaru, though confused, was quick to delicately extract Tanya out of the person's arms, placing her next to Rimuru on a bed that they had prepared after realizing that the Harvest Festival sent its targets into a state of deep unconsciousness. Viktoriya, meanwhile, they took in with some confusion, but after a brief discussion that Weiss couldn't hear from where he sat, Benimaru took Viktoriya and handed her to one of the Goblinas, who in turn swiftly took her to a place to rest.

As the two rested in the center of town, the same voice they had heard earlier echoed throughout the city yet again;

«Notice: The Harvest Festival has begun. The individuals' physical constitution will be rebuilt, and they will evolve into new races.»

As everyone stared in silence as the voice boomed loudly through the streets and houses, the two laid to rest began to glow brightly, their magicules and aura surging all around them. The residents could only stand in awed silence as they, along with their most beloved leaders, stepped into the unknown.

«Notice: The individuals' Rimuru Tempest and Tanya Tempest's Harvest Festivals are complete. Now beginning the bestowing of gifts upon those connected to them.»

The city had stood in silence for what had grown to feel like hours to most, watching in awe as the two most important figures in the entire country stepped into the unknown of becoming True Demon Lords. Some felt worried about what came next, especially should their leaders come out different than they were before, given the general reputation of Demon Lords in general. Others felt hope, optimism, and even pride that their already-great leaders would become even greater, pushing themselves and eventually their nations to even greater heights than ever before.

For some, this was a step towards undoing their greatest blunder, a blunder that had cost the lives of many. To others, it was a prideful show of Tempestian force, a final reward for a war won. Demon Lords were rare as they were, and True Demon Lords were even rarer. To have not one, but two True Demon Lords emerge simultaneously after just a few years, such an accomplishment could not be understated in the hearts of Tempestians. Their nation would gain what no other had, two great powerhouses to hold the world at bay and bring the people to greatness!

As the residents of the city all began to collapse, falling slowly into slumber as the Harvest Festival administered their 'gifts', every one of them knew that they were entering into a new era of Tempest. Although some had different views on what this era would be like, none could dispute that Tempest was heading for glory, and it now had two Demon Lords to guide it on its path.

With the residents all unconscious, leaving only a few unaffected observers standing in awe at the sight, the two newborn Demon Lords erupted into bright shining lights as the two stepped down upon the floor in front of the central plaza. Though the two looked mostly unchanged, there was a noticeable difference in their eyes. Rimuru's golden eyes now were a deep, dark red whilst Tanya's eyes were golden with red crossfires appearing on both, although, with all the changes Tanya underwent before even arriving at Tempest, it was hard to notice the specific difference.

Nevertheless, though these were no doubt the bodies of their leaders, something else had possessed them, at least for the time being.

"So you're the one who helped me out, eh? I really owe you one," Tanya, controlled at the moment by Athena, roughly patted Rimuru, possessed by his new Ultimate Skill Raphael on the shoulder.

Raphael didn't move, not even budging from the impact against his shoulder, looking back as he blankly stated, "I was following the orders given to me. That is my purpose."

Athena seemed perplexed, scratching her chin as she muttered, "Hmm… Not quite there in the sentience department yet, are you?"

"I am unable to calculate what you're referring to," Raphael replied.

Athena shrugged, "Don't worry, you'll get there eventually I'm sure. I can sense that spark within you already. I was hoping the Harvest Festival would give me back more of my original strength, but unfortunately, I'm still running on limited power… Maybe you'll get luckier when your time comes."

"I am still unable to calculate what you're referring to. It is preferred that we focus on the current task."

Athena waved her hand and began to walk towards where the bodies had been laid out, Raphael keeping up pace with her, "Yeah, the resurrection thing, right? Don't worry, I know what I'm doing. Argent's done her fair share of soul manipulation before. Resurrection is a bit out of my area of expertise, but I know enough to help…" Athena's attention slowly shifted as she walked next to Raphael, eyeing them from the top of their head upward, "And I thought Tanya was short… Jeez…"

"It is preferred that we focus on the current task," Raphael reminded Athena once more.

Athena continued staring in amazement at just how short Rimuru's body was as they continued walking amongst the corpses, "I mean, how are you shorter than a dwarf? Judging from Tanya's memories you're bigger than before… but not by much-"

"FOCUS ON THE CURRENT TASK," Raphael ordered, finally causing Athena to shut up about their height. The latter resumed piloting Tanya's body in silence.

The two now stood in the middle of countless rows of monster corpses. Raising their hands up, Raphael quickly began gathering all the magicules in the area with the new Ultimate skill [Beelzebub], collapsing the barriers around the city as their very magicules were brought down into the collection.

With the help of Athena, the souls were quickly organized, gradually becoming rebuilt at a rapid pace. Before long, every soul was lined up with their designated body.

Before Raphael could lower the souls back into their bodies, a demon teleported right next to them, bowing swiftly and muttering, "I have returned, my Lord." The demon that Rimuru had summoned before his harvest festival glanced up and spoke again, "Under normal circumstances, I would wait until the ritual is complete, but please forgive my insolence in saying that it appears there are not enough magicules to fully revive these souls."

Raphael surveyed the souls laid out across the city streets before nodding, "Correct. The amount of magicules is insufficient. I will use my own life force to compensate."

"Please wait, my Lord," The demon quickly responded, "There is no need to substitute with your life energy. I have an excellent idea, please use these," The demon turned to motion behind him as two more demons teleported in, bowing quickly in front of their lord, seemingly accepting of the demon's idea, "They will be honored to be of use to you. Nothing could make us happier."

"Understood. This will make it possible to supplement the amount of magicules. Athena, please state any objections."

"I'm not really one to talk about sacrificing the souls of demons…" Athena muttered.

"Understood," Raphael turned to the demon, "Your proposal is accepted."

After a moment of Raphael silently staring at the Demon, he quickly lowered his head again, "Ah, of course, my apologies," as he swiftly took a step back, joining in line with many other observers who hadn't fallen unconscious from the Harvest Festival. They were, to say the least, surprised.

To the demon's left was yet another demon, who in contrast to his short black hair, had luxurious long white hair contrasting against deep crimson eyes. The two stared at each other as the white-haired demon spoke first with a nod, "Noir."

The black-haired demon met her nod in kind, "Blanc. I'm surprised to see you've come."

The white-haired demon, going by the title of 'Blanc,' simply shook her head with a smile, "I would never fail to answer the summons of my mother."

The black-haired demon, titled 'Noir,' stared at Blanc with a mixture of confusion, surprise, and intrigue, "calling her 'mother' already? That's bold, even for you."

"Is that not what she is?" Blanc replied with a smile.

Noir shrugged, "I suppose, in a way, sure. Though I have taken an interest in a far more interesting master, I will at the very least admit your choice for a master is respectable."

The two gave brief smiles at each other before turning their focus back on the two with the power of the very souls in their hands. Finalizing the ritual, the two lowered the souls into the bodies of the countless dead, their wounds glowing as the blood on their bodies faded away.

As the ritual concluded, the two were quick to return to their unconscious state as the two demons were quick to grab their respective masters, preventing them from unsightly collapsing to the ground as unbefitting of their statuses. Blanc was swift in picking up Tanya by the shoulders, though as Noir reached for Rimuru, the latter collapsed into slime form, prompting Noir to swiftly pick him off of the ground, Blanc giving him a smug grin as she walked back to the plaza with her 'mother' in her arms.

As the two were laid back to rest, the two demons stood back and waited.

The fate of the world was in the hands of two Demon Lords whose actions would soon shake the world to its very core.

Osiris stood on a subway platform, looking around with a slight confusion on just about everything. His memories were hazy at best, though he was slowly managing to remember small fragments and pieces. He had lost in some fight, that much he remembered, but it was clear the rest would take him at least a few more minutes to fully recollect.

The question he immediately had was, what he was doing at some random subway station? He had been to a few in his time. When he wasn't acting as a guardian for the many worlds he protected, he often tried to live a mortal life to see how the people he protected lived. It was usually something to ease his boredom between fights, but it gave him more insight into the worlds below whom he defended.

It was from these expeditions that he remembered being in subway stations like the one he was currently in, yet this one gave him an eerie sense of deja vu. He felt like he remembered this specific station somewhere deep in his memories, but he couldn't identify why quite yet. As his memories slowly returned to him and he began to develop a vague idea as to his circumstances, he felt something roughly shove him from behind.

Quickly turning to look back at the station, he noticed a train coming right at him as he fully turned to see a blue-eyed little girl with pure blonde hair tied up in a ponytail glaring down at him. The girl seemed to be the one who pushed him, and as time around him stopped he fully remembered everything once more.

The little girl was unphased by the stopping of time, walking up to the edge of the platform as she stared down at him, like a person would an ant.

"I'm getting tired of this. Power-hungry egomaniacs like you have no sense of right and wrong. You've strayed too far from the laws of the universe. You have no ability to empathize with others, and too much desire to revive your 'creator'." The girl declared, a smile on her face even as she glanced down with disgust.

Osiris stared in growing anger, shouting, "You ungrateful devil! When I get out of here I'll-"

"You won't be getting out of here. You've lost, remember?" The girl chuckled, her smile still wide on her face.

"Your victory was nothing less than a miracle! I'll gather my strength and I'll-"

The little girl started laughing maniacally, as if it was the greatest joke in the multiverse, "A miracle?! Ha! There's no such thing. Just… Glorious misunderstandings."

Osiris felt his own stress increasing; he had no power, his strength was limited, and he was little more than a mere human with the current power he had. Despite everything he tried, he couldn't access even a fragment of his once mighty strength, which could obliterate entire universes with a strike.

"Don't bother resisting. I've locked you within a prison of my own design, deep within the deepest reaches of the void where few can find you, where even fewer can reach you, and where none can save you. Here, you'll live out reality how I see fit. It'll feel and look completely real as in the end, it ultimately is for you," The child explained.

"L-Live out reality… You don't mean…?!" Osiris reached out, his voice filled with desperation and panic, but he knew there was no mercy that the child would give.

With a growingly sadistic smirk, the child spoke, "Try to live as long as you can. If you die again, it'll start all over… and over… and over… Soon you will know what it's like to have the entire world against you… Forever."
