Chương 7: Suspicions
Glancing down the stairwell, Claire sees something moving around on the ground at the very bottom. As she heads down the second flight of stairs towards the second floor, she spots another dead cop, this one sitting in a corner in front of the next set of stairs and by a large shutter that's blocked off a path. Reaching the second floor, she has two options, go left to continue heading downstairs, or go right down a hallway. She glances downstairs, seeing a zombie starting to make its way up the stairs, blocking the path Leon told her to take. She heads down the hall to see if there's another path she can take. She doesn't walk more than a few step before she sees that it only goes down a few more feet before it's barricaded.
Why the hell is everything blocked off?! No wonder there's only four of us alive, this place is a death trap with all these dead ends!
Glancing to the right she spots a door. Turning the knob, the door opens up to a small locker room. A pipe on the wall to the left is broken, hot steam shooting out, blocking the path to some showers. A couple of lockers have been opened up already, probably by Leon. A body lays on the ground. Having nowhere else to go but downstairs, Claire leaves the room. The zombie that was downstairs earlier is now halfway up the stairs. Claire heads to the top of the stairs and shoots it, landing a head shot and causing it to fall face first onto the steps. The gunshot causes the zombie in the corner to wake up.
She hears it let out a scream as it lunges towards her. Claire jumps to the side, the zombie barely missing her and falling down the stairs. Claire shoots the first zombie in the head to make sure it stays down, then shoots the other one in the head too. She hurries down the stairs. At the bottom of the stairs sits a window boarded up with wooden planks nailed to the wall. She makes a left, heading down a long, ominous, hallway. Reaching the end, she turns right, and sees the door to the office Leon mentioned.
A body of a fat cop lays in front of a vending machine on the other end of the hallway, their head blown to bits. The moaning of a zombie can be heard coming from somewhere else in the hall. Not waiting for it to show up, she heads through the door into the office. Some things are stung up on the ceiling halfway down. Walking to the other side It's a banner that says, "WELCOME LEON". Several paper stars are also strung around. She can only imagine how he must have felt when he saw this, the happy faces on everyone who set this up, now probably mangled apart and possibly walking around this station right now, dead, and looking for human flesh.
Claire lets out a sigh to lighten the heavy weight pressing on her chest and heads through a door up a couple small steps, entering the lobby again.
"I got the medallion," Claire says as she pulls it out from her pocket.
"Good job," Marvin says with a weak smile, "Just one more to go. Go on ahead and put it in the slot."
"Alright," Claire heads over to the statue, placing the medallion into the middle slot, clicking it into place.
"So...do you have any idea what caused all this?"
"No idea," Marvin shakes his head, "Just be happy you guys weren't here when it started, things were, much, worse,"
"...When did this start?" Claire asks, a sinking feeling in her stomach.
"A few days ago, why?"
"I just, find it funny that Chris goes missing suddenly, and not long later, this," She holds her hands up, gesturing at the space around them, "Happens. Do you know where my brother's office was?"
"Yeah, the east wing in the second floor, but last I checked the only way was through the shower room,"
"That's, got a broken pipe. There's no way I'm getting past that steam unscathed,"
"Gosh dam-" Marvin glances at Sherry, "Dang it. I thought they had put it back," He lets out a sigh, "The valve for it had been given to an officer in the east office,"
"The place, I first came from?" Claire asks, tiredly pointing at the closed shutter.
"Yeah,"
"Great," She says as she lets out a sigh, "Oh yeah, there's some C4 on a barricade blocking the path to the last statue. You wouldn't happen to know where a detonator is,"
"Hm...I can't say. Your best bet would be to check the armory in the S.T.A.R.S office, or the back room of the Operation's room,"
"I'll check the armory first, I can kill two birds with one stone. How you holding up Sherry?"
"I'm doing okay," She says with a light smile, "I just hope my mom won't be too mad at me,"
"I'm sure she's worried sick about you," Claire says as she kneels down, "Just one more medallion, and we'll be out of here and finding your mother,"
"...You promise?" Claire grabs her hand, holding it firmly in hers.
"I promise," Sherry's smile brightens up. Claire lets go and gets back up. As she heads for the shutters, she spots the grenade launcher on the front desk along with four flame rounds. She checks the barrel, it's empty. She loads a grenade into it, putting the other four into her belt pouch, which is now fulled. Luckily, the grenade launcher has a strap, which she puts around her shoulder, the launcher sitting snug on her back.
"Hey, Leon?" Claire asks into her radio as she walks up to the shutters.
"Yeah?"
"I know how to get the last medallion. We need to find a detonator for the C4, Marvin said there should be on in the back room of the Operations Room or the Armory in the S.T.A.R.S office. I'm gonna go check out the armory, my brother's office is there and I wanna check for any clues on his whereabouts,"
"Alright, I'll start heading to the operations room right away,"
"Thanks, and stay safe,"
"You too,"
As she steps in front of the shutters, she reloads her handgun, two more bullets left in her pouch. She places a hand on the lever, glancing over to her left, seeing Sherry peeking out from behind a medical divider.
"Just gotta run in, find the valve, and run back out," She mutters to herself as she pulls the lever, the shutters clanging around as they start to rise up.
