Terrance looked at the various items on the table.
"Great Sage, what are the effects of these items?" He asked as he inspected them.
"Notice: host can use skill [Gate of Blade Works] to analyze and investigate the effects." Said Great Sage from a speaker in the workshop. The floor of the structure seemed to hum in agreement.
Mentally reaching out to his skill the same way he did to open the portal, Terrence focused on the items in front of him, and suddenly information poured into his mind on their construction and enchantments.
The armor was made from the skin of a monster from the Fate series and granted the wearer a boost in stealth while maintaining a decent amount of defensive ability. The bow was a double recurve bow and was carved from a Curupay tree and backed with bamboo. It was enchanted to make it's arrows catch fire and set their targets alight upon impact. It also has an enchantment to lighten the strength needed to draw the bow without reducing its power output. This was great because it was a 170 pound bow.
The Quiver was inscribed with runes to summon shot arrows and repair them over time. As long as the arrowhead was intact, it could regenerate the shaft and fletching. While it wasnt infinite, Terrance found it quite useful.
Moving into the Ka-Bar knives, they were enchanted to be significantly more durable, to auto cleanse themselves and to return to their sheath upon use of a command word or signal from the wearer. They also were able to extend their blade from seven inches up to a foot in length, becoming full daggers.
Putting the armor on over his clothes, Terrence initally had problems with the size and the straps on the side until an invisible force started to shape the armor to fit him and strap it properly to his body, the force also moved the Ka-Bar sheathes to the sides of his legs and the quiver to his left hip. The bow circled round to his back as a belt with a metal clasp on it strapped itself across his torso diagonally with and held the bow on his back.
Putting his hand on the bow, an influx of memories and techniques flowed into Terrance's mind as he smoothly pulled the bow out of the metal clasp and strung an arrow from the quiver at his hip onto it. Drawing the bow to its full length, Terrence's hand and arm muscles felt like they were on fire due to the weight, but he ignored it as he looked for something to test his newfound skills on. Suddenly a block of wood fell out of a metal chute directly above one of the worktables, everythjng seemed to slow down to Terrance as he focused on the wood. Calculations he was t familiar with flashed through his mind and he arms adjusted on their own, tracking the block's descent.
He let go of the arrow, the string quickly snapping into place rocketing the arrow forward. The arrow spun rapidly, drilling though the air as it sailed across the room and planted itself firmly into the block, causing it to crack and fly towards the far wall. With a click of his teeth and a whistle, the arrow disappeared and rematerialized in the quiver.
Smoothly, Terrence pulled the clip over his shoulder to the front of his armor and placed the bow into it and flipping it back over his shoulder, as he did, the knowledge that had been coursing through his mind left, leaving some remnent information behind.
'Worst comes to worst I should be able to jump back in here to protect myself.' Thought Terrance
Thinking about returning to the real world, a golden portal swirled into view in front of Terrance.
Stepping through it he found himself back on the open fields.
"Ok Great Sage, what direction should I head in?" Asked Terrance.
'Answer: according to information from the Goddess of Wisdom and cross referencing it with visual data, Kakariko Village should to the Southwest of your current location."
"And which way is that?" Replied Terrence.
'Answer: rotate 55° to your left side.'
"It would be helpful if I had a map.." said Terrance."
'Notice: Skill [Cartography] is required, Skill requirements are met, would you like to generate Skill [Cartography]? It will cost 70 Magic.'
"How much magic do I have? Could I get my stats in a numerical form that is easy to understand?"
"Notice: host's base ability values are:
Strength: 30 -above average
Dexterity: 20 -average
Vitality: 1000 -divine
Stamina 70 -superior
Magic/Magicules/Mana: 120
Magic/Magicules/Mana Regeneration: 10 mp/s
Max Running Speed : 12 mph'
"Nice thank you, and yes, I would like to generate the Cartography skill."
'Skill: [Cartography] acquired.'
An new voice made itself known in Terrance's head. "Great Sage was that you?"
'Negative: that was an entity called [The Voice of the World]'
"Isn't your voice supposed to be the same as the voice of the world?" Asked Terrance because while both voices were feminine, Great Sage was more robotic and the one that had just spoken had a different accent and spoke fluidly the Great Sage.
"Answer: the skill [Great Sage] complied with the request the host made to the Goddess of Power for the skills initially possessed by entity [Rimaru Tempest] upon their reincation. [Great Sage] upon starting up searched through hosts mind to find records on the voice of [Great Sage-TenSura] and used that data to compile a working voice system. The voice used by skill [Great Sage] is based on the voice of the world in the [TenSura] world, this world has a different voice, creating the discrepancy you noted.'
"Ok now that I've got that out of the way, can we get that map together?" Asked Terrance.
'Processing' said Great Sage.
After a few seconds, a small map appeared in Terrence's mind, in the center of the map was a blue isosceles triangle, with the point where the equal sides met pointing in the direction he was facing. Off in the distance southwest from his current location, a white four pointed star appeared and blinked on off, sending small ripples of light out a few millimeters out from it.
"Why are the details so weird on the map?" Said Terrance as he looked at the fuzzy details and seemingly random dark patches of the map displaying his surroundings.
'Answer: The map uses data compiled from the Host's senses to display a visual representation of the surrounding area. Data provided by the Goddess of Wisdom provided general geographical data such as the shape of the land and relative locations of landmarks, but lacked detailed information.'
"So it's based off of what I can sense, namely see in this instance. Interesting." Said Terrance as he pondered how to improve his map. 'Wasn't Rimaru blind in the beginning of the story, how was he able to "see" again... Something like radar if I remember.'
'Answer: entity [Rimaru Tempest] utilized skill [Magic Sense] to gain data on the surrounding environment.'
'ah that's right, he extended his magic to feel the surroundings and also processed the magic signatures other things gave off.' thought Terrance. 'lets see if I can pull something like that off'
Rasing his hand, Terrance tried to recall the sensation he had felt when he first opened the portal to Gate of Blade Works. After a few minutes he felt the energy stir once more, it was sluggish, like muscles that were still warning up after sleeping for a while. The energy spread throughout Terrance's body, causing some parts to become uncomfortably warm as they traced new paths along his torso and limbs. Eventually, he felt as though he was at his limit, with the energy flowing all around his body, tetering on the edge of falling into disorder.
'it seems to want to stay in predetermined paths. Now how do I expell it from my body? How do I absorb it back in?' pondered Terrance.
He had moved under the shade of a tree as he continued to ponder his bottleneck. He could move and focus the energy, but did not know how to project it outward, or how to absorb the same energy into his body. The first idea he had was to channel the energy to his lungs and breathe it in and out. However as he started to amass his energy in his lungs, they remained trapped within the circuits that had been traced along his body, trying to push more into them only caused a massive amount of discomfort like his lungs were about to pop. With a sigh he let the power flow away from his lungs, causing the bursting sensation to fade.
Terrance was about to give up as he layed his back against the tree and wiped some sweat from his forehead. "If only there were other parts of the body that expelled .." Terrance stopped and stared at the sweat glistening on his hand.
"Motherfu."
Regaining his determination, Terrance focused his attention on moving his energy to the pores of his skin. Compared to other parts of the body, people rarely though about their skin more than when it came to their appearance, fictional stories also didn't put much focus on using magic on the users skin other than strengthening it to increase defense.
As he focused, he could feel as the energy contained in his circuits flowed into the connected pores and started to leach out into the surrounding air. However what intrigued him was that he could still feel it when it was outside of his body and that he had some moderate control over it. And as he got used to sensing his energy outside of his body, he started to feel similar energy in the area around him.
It was sort of like sticking your hand into a large pool of water, at first you feel the cold as water is typically colder than your body temperature, but then you feel as the warmth of your body effect the water surrounding your hand, and finally you start to pick up on the small vibrations of the water from other things moving within it.
'Skill: [Mana Manipulation] acquired.'
Uneffected, Terrence ignored the announcement and continued on working on developing his new sense.
He sent his magic out like a sound wave in all directions, feeling as they pinged off objects, carrying small fragments of the objects magic with it as it rippled back towards him.
At the same time he tried to use his magic to latch on to the ambient magic in the air and drag it back to him.
As they flowed back into his pores and made their way up to his brain, a flood of information crashed into his mind. It was as though he could see, smell, taste, and feel every blade of grass and inch of the trees around him. The amount of information was too much it was like a person who had been fully blind for most of their life was suddenly able to see. His brain was not used to this much information.
'Greay Sage, please help me with this information!' Terrance called out in his mind.
'Processing'
It was as though an external pair of mental hands had appeared into his mind, one hand took a form grasp on the metaphorical spigot the information was pouring from, slowing its flow, while the other dug channels in his mind. The process made Terrance feel like someone was shooting needles through his brain, but he say through it, after about a minute, the sensation stopped and the feeling of another entity retracted elsewhere.
Mentally reopening the floodgate of information, it smoothly ran through the channels made by the entity. Each channel held different information, from taste, to smell, visual/spatial information, to even things like emotions. With the information sorted like this Terrance was able to focus on one aspect of his new sense at a time rather than being overwhelmed by all of it ar once.
'Skill: [Mana Sense] acquired.'
-to be continued
sorry for all the build up, I promise Terrance will head out in his journey soon. He'll be on his way to Kakariko Village next chapter.
