Burning my worthless life in the office, I didn't think about death, rebirths, heroes or harmony, I didn't think about anything at all. And I thought this was normal, but as they say, everything is random, I died ridiculously. Habitually taking a whole pack of Viagra before an important case, I suddenly caught a cardiac arrest, and what a death it could have been. Gone like Tamerlane, but no, it's what it is.
'It's possible that that RedBull was unnecessary after all.'
And the worst part is, that was my last thought.
However, that's just the beginning. Being a sceptic, I believed in nothing and doubted everything, but you have no idea what my surprise was when I was reborn as a fucking spider! Circle of rebirth, all that stuff, but I didn't think I'd be living a new life in a meaningful way. Or is that the way it's meant to be? And there's no one to tell me what it's like? Maybe I sinned in a previous life. I was a Hindu and ate a cow and the gods cursed me. No. My last life was pretty normal. Yeah, I lived in cold and grey Russia, but I wasn't a spider, was I?
Being in some sterile laboratory in a state of half-sleep, I didn't understand what was happening. Those damn scientists were doing some experiments on me and injecting me with something. They were irradiating me with everything, if you think about it. When I woke up again, I felt an unprecedented surge of strength, and with indescribable ease I broke the heavy industrial glass. Once free, I was hungry and eager to find someplace cosier than this before they missed me, though they must have cameras, so it was more a matter of time.
Climbing into a vent huge for my modest size by means of a newly created spider web, I disappeared into the darkness in search of a cosy vessel. Why a vessel, you ask? I was drawn to the human body for some reason, and the desire to live there was the top of my dreams. Without noticing it, I stopped rejecting predatory suggestions of my cynical mind about parasitic way of life and less value of human life. After all, I myself am not quite a human being, or not a human being at all, damn it....
Having got out of the ventilation system to the largest crowd of people, I started to look for a suitable victim for my 'small needs'. All of them were children or students, but it didn't matter so much, it was even better, a young growing organism, and it should have a higher wear and tear period, stop, what am I carrying. Predator thoughts, I guess I'll have to accept that, otherwise I'll just die and fuck knows if I'll be as intelligent and which carcass will be next. Choosing the one closest to me, I began to weave my web to the target. Finishing the process, I quickly descended and dug into the ever so weak neck. The kid flinched in surprise, and I almost flew off to the side, but I managed to secure my footing and continue on my way a moment later.
Once inside, as it may sound, I suddenly realised that I could grab a body, and it would be no harder than taking candy from a boxer.
Something switched inside me and I began to create a whole new web, and by the feel of it, it was alive. Not like me and you, it was more like it was just responding to my thoughts, it was what began to connect me to all of the systems of this gasp.
In the couple of moments that it moved in front of my classmates and friends, I was literally becoming human again. It was frightening and fascinating at the same time.
What kind of creature am I?
Fully established in the 'carrier', I calmly sighed. Not by myself, of course, but through the recipient, who 'kindly' gave me this body.
- What's the matter, Parker, scared of spiders? Or forgot how to breathe, don't be shy, I'm always ready to help. - The well-built blond came to me with a quick step and 'friendly' clapped me on the shoulder, so that I heard a crunch.
Turning to the athlete, I intercepted his hand, immediately noting the work of the manicurist, and shook it firmly as a sign of my 'gratitude'. When I heard the familiar crunch, I loosened my grip and slapped the guy on the shoulder so hard he sat up in surprise.
- Easy, Pete,' it sounded friendly from behind me, and I turned back to the voice, throwing him a look of superiority. - It seems to me that Flash has already realised his wrongness and acknowledged the mistakes you so kindly pointed out to him. - The brunet grinned, and the big Thompson nodded vigorously, like a Manchurian dummy. - See, bro? The conflict is settled.
Handing me a can of soda, the brunet once again flashed me a perfect smile and winked at one of his fellow students. I, on the other hand, was trying to get over the shock and the thought that I had a body again and I was goddamn alive. Admittedly, it was a little off-putting. Yeah, I thought I knew what I was getting into when I decided to take over the body, but dick floated around and I certainly didn't expect it to be like this. Yes, I'm a parasite, but would you care? Or would you rather spend your short life in a cage of arachnid flesh? Tough question, I agree, but I'm not a Fey godmother, so I'm a little out of my depth when it comes to humanity.
Every second the new body responded better and better, but I didn't forget that it was just a suit, and I was still a little spider in a vast world of possibilities and whatnot.
- You don't look so good, Parker, maybe you should go home. - The teacher's voice was suddenly sympathetic. - Harry, can you give Peter a lift home? - The brunet smiled dazzlingly again, and without saying anything, he took me under his elbow and led me gently to his car.
The silver Audi. instantly responded to the call of the key fob and, blinking the alarm, let us into the cabin.
- You're really not yourself today, bro. Shall we have a smoke to relax? - With a friendly wink, Harry pulled out a charcoal black packet. - Oh, yeah, you don't smoke, I always forget. - The brunet lowered his head frustratedly and silently put the packet back in his pocket.
When I got home, I nodded gratefully to my 'new' friend and left without saying goodbye, for I really felt some weakness in the host's body. Quickly finding my room and bed, I passed out, but I woke up immediately and strode mechanically towards the kitchen. After devouring all the meat of any nutritional value, I went back to the bedroom and fell into a healing sleep, so that I could recover as soon as possible.
