16.76% Reborn as a Vessel / Chapter 28: Hound

Chương 28: Hound

The reconstruction process had caused me agonizing pain but at the very least the effects of it were readily visible.

The colors in the surroundings appeared more vibrant, the scents in the air more intense and the feeling of the cool air in the cave more apparent.

==============

I called upon the status screen to confirm what I had been thinking, an increase in the perception stat by a whole sub rank, increasing my combat rating to G.

Every time I viewed the screen, I couldn't help but be a bit disappointed at my strength and constitution falling behind, it was clear these were not my strong suits.

Of course, now wasn't the time to complain, an increase in my second strongest stat to match my inherent stat was incredible.

One more thing was a change in my species, instead of being 'Broken Vessel, it was now 'Incomplete Vessel' along with a percentage counter.

Only 1%, it seems that this number would be very hard to increase.

As I recovered, I remembered what I'd been trying to do before reconstruction started and I turned around to inspect the shrine.

Everything was as I had found it, except for one thing, the family portrait, the man's face from before had faded away, joining his wife and son.

I stopped for a moment to pay my respects, before leaving the cave, I'd gotten what I had wanted, no point in loitering around.

I leapt down the staircase and produced the compass and dagger, running towards the exit gate.

The increase in perception allowed my mind to better keep up with the speed I was going at, giving me better control of my movements while sprinting,

One more unexpected advantage of the perception increase was the complete elimination of Ambush Vipers as a threat.

Even from afar, while they concealed the rest of their bodies, their four black insectoid wings were visible, giving their position away.

I didn't kill if I didn't have to, collecting their fangs after killing them would only slow me down.

I tried to keep an eye on my surroundings at all times, I'd like to avoid further incidents in this place.

Which is why I noticed the mangled corpse of a horned rabbit, its remains being primarily skeletal as most of the meat had been ripped of the bone.

These were at the bottom of the food chain, so it could have been any monster but I should still proceed with caution.

I collected the horn from the rabbit corpse as I went on ahead, eventually finding myself in a situation very similar to the one I was in before.

'Mephits, of course.'

I guessed that I had found the one who had killed the horned rabbit as I observed the scaly yellow figure of a lone mephit flying towards me.

Wait. Why was it alone?

They would usually at least be in groups of five, the only reason one would be alone was if its previous group members had died.

It crossed by me, not looking in my direction, only occasionally glancing backwards in fear as it flew.

Now that it was closer, I saw that a piece of its wing was missing, seemingly bitten off as blood dripped to the ground.

It came to a stop as it looked back one more time before it opened its clenched fist, in its hand an object resembling a whistle.

'No!'

I lunged out of cover towards the wounded mephit as it held the whistle close to its mouth.

I grabbed onto its horn and yanked it backwards before it could blow the whistle, grabbing it in a headlock as I used my dagger to slit its throat.

His panicked cries never came out, instead a disgusting gurgling noise as I kicked him to the floor, taking cover once again.

The whistle it held was a horde whistle, had I let him use it, a horde of 40 mephits would descend upon this area in no time, making my exit difficult.

What was it so afraid of that it resorted to using that, I thought as I looked back the same direction it had been wary off.

A faint green glimmer in the air as a figure moved almost imperceptibly fast.

*SWOOSH*

Standing over the corpse was a wolf like beast, 9 feet tall with green and blue fur that seemed to resemble the rushing winds.

Its claws and fangs deadly sharp, its eyes were pure slits of red, indicating a berserk like state.

'A Windstepper Hound.'

An incredibly rare monster to encounter in this field, it was a monster ranked at least F-, its unexpected agility caused many young awakened to fall prey to it.

Its fur, especially around its maw had been dyed red as it gave off a low growl inspecting the surroundings, looking for the one who stole its prey.

*CRRK*

However, it seemed hunger got the better of it, as it began to rip apart the flesh of the mephit greedily.

I had hidden behind cover at its approach but rose to my feet, deciding to run while it was distracted.

*WHOOSH*

With a gust of wind, the hound was gone, reappearing behind the pile of rocks opposite to mine, impaled on its teeth, a horned rabbit.

I knew the reason that rabbit was dead because it had tried to do the same thing as me, alerting the hounds keen hearing.

My eyes scrambled as I looked for a safe exit as I spotted a rock archway only a few meters away, its surface laden with black triangles.

I evaluated the chances of me running away before resorting to the plan I had in mind, while the plan was risky, running was riskier.

As with most of my plans, I decided to throw a rock as distraction, aiming at the same spot the horned rabbit had emerged from.

*THUK*

As soon as the rock struck the spot, the hound reappeared there growling, annoyed at having its meal disturbed.

'Now or never.'

While it was as far away from me as I could get it, I planted my feet on the ground, before launching into a full sprint at the archway.

I heard a thunderous roar followed by a chain of footsteps, the hound grew closer and closer as I could hear the sound of my impending doom.

"GRRRR." A hungry growl stuck fear in my heart.
