'What do I do now?'
Would they send more assassins after me in a short span of time?
I'm lucky that he was only low D tier, though hiring any awakened to assassinate someone else required an insane amount of resources.
Looking at Derek, I sifted through his storage ring, trying to find anything I could use to find information on his employers.
No such luck, everything he owned was standard for an awakened with a few spare weapons to match.
Do I go through his phone? Or is it better to inform law enforcement before his body is inevitably eaten by beasts?
Do I tell them at all? I already have a track record of killing; at what point do they stop believing my testimonies?
I don't know.
I felt soft fur brush against my arm to break me from my nervous spiral.
Nix was back and tired from the looks of it, the mystical fire explosion that wounded Derek from before seemed to drain her limited mana supply.
Despite all that, I felt her emotions through the familiar bond I knew that she was concerned about me.
"I'm fine."
I said as I picked Nix up, letting her rest on my shoulder as I took out my phone.
I'm not the most intelligent when it comes to dealing with these situations, a part of me even wondered if Derek really had to die.
If Adam was in a similar situation, or even Markus would it have ended this way?
As I wandered over to the contacts I had saved in my phone, I remembered what Markus had done in the tower.
How he had recorded the conversation between him and that deranged assailant to act as a confession of sorts.
I shook my head, regretting my own stupidity as I called Markus.
I knew someone from the Reinhold guild had thrown me under the bus and felt a bit wary as I called him.
Not because I though he was involved but more because I was worried about getting him involved in all this.
Maybe I trusted his character from the novel too much, or maybe my trust was won over far easier than I thought.
But the thought of him betraying me was quick to be dismissed for several reasons both practical and emotional.
"Hello?"
****Markus POV*****
I felt incredibly drowsy as the 'Basics of Mana Manipulation' class came to an end, it was almost impressive how they could make such an interesting topic so damn boring.
As break came by, I planned on meeting up with some friends who had different classes but was stopped in my tracks when I saw who was calling me.
Ajax, the one-winged angel (Patent Pending) himself.
This was odd as he usually would never call and even texting directly was rare, so after moving to a place with fewer people I picked up the call.
"Hello?"
Picking up the call to the chirping of birds and growling of beasts as ambient noise was funny, as I wondered where the hell he was calling me from.
"Are you free right now?" He asked.
"As free as I can be, what's up?"
"I need help with something... or advice. I'm not sure."
"Sure, what happened?"
"A hitman was sent after me and whoever sent them has access to my mercenary ID logs."
"What?"
I rushed to an even more isolated area as I unintentionally raised my voice in disbelief, seemingly far more panicked than the target of the hit himself.
"Tell me what happened in detail. Are you alright?" I asked.
After confirming he was fine, he told me what he knows and what he thought about the situation.
"So basically, there should be no reason to hunt you but there should be plenty a reason to hunt 'The Angel'?" I summarized.
"...Yes." Ajax said, most likely still trying to resist his nickname.
Jokes aside, his reasoning was pretty solid.
One of the conditions for him joining was that his privacy would be protected as much as it could, with most not even knowing his real name.
To do that, paradoxically the guild would have access to a lot of his information including when he entered a dungeon or monster field.
"I'm assuming the 'hitman' is dead now?" I asked.
"Yes. I didn't want to take the risk of carrying him all the way back."
Nodding, I let out a sigh.
"You're right. There's no way aside from it, someone from our guild screwed you over and you're not safe until I find out who it is."
"I'll be fine if I just don't enter any dungeons or fields, though there is still the problem of contacting law enforcement."
"Don't."
There was silence from his side as I rubbed my temples, understanding how morally corrupt I sounded.
Getting away with murder in dungeons and fields was not hard especially if you were not in the same party as the victim.
That's probably why they decided to try and kill Ajax while he was in that forest.
"If I don't hand over what I found, it'll be harder to find out who was behind this." He argued.
"Hand it over to us. The guild got you into this mess, we'll get you out. Our investigators are just as good if not better than the associations."
"..."
"Listen, I know it sounds wrong, but this is for the best; not only do we keep the enemy in the dark we also prevent the information from leaking."
After a bit more deliberation he answered.
"...alright. I'll get his storage ring and gun."
Maybe, my response to this situation sounded cold and unethical but I'd long since stopped having any sympathy for these wannabe assassins or hitmen.
I've lost count of how many times I've seen my security detail kill them.
Even worse, I'll never be able to forget the few times they did come close to kidnapping me or outright killing me.
While I felt bad for making Ajax choose to do this, he clearly thought it was the best solution as well or he wouldn't have called me beforehand.
I heard some sounds over the phone, Ajax seemed to be hurriedly looking for anything that could be used as evidence.
"I have everything of note, beasts are starting to notice the blood. I have to move."
"Alright, I'll get some guild members to wipe records of this call ever happening."
"...Sorry for involving you in this." He said to which I gave a slight laugh.
"If anything, I should be the one apologizing. Joining my guild has put your safety at risk and I plan on taking full responsibility."
I said already thinking of who to trust with this, and who would better be left in the dark.
"Though, I do have one question..."
I started, wondering if I should ask this question at all.
"Why did you think I wouldn't be involved in this?"
Gathering up the courage to ask, I awaited his reply as he seemed to be taking some time to think.
"I just feel like you wouldn't. You have no reason to."
"That's a little thing we humans call trust." I said mockingly.
"And if you were to make a plan to kill me, I doubt I would have survived." He continued.
"That... I guess that's also trust? Trust in my abilities? Though I'd prefer it if you didn't have that kind of trust." I said a bit conflicted.
Though while I said that I also began to think how I would ensure that Ajax died.
For fun of course, all hypothetical scenarios.
The safest way would just be to send a bunch of C ranks and a B rank but that's pretty boring.
Light spells were a given, his cloaking is dangerous, and it'd have to be in close range I'd rather face the dagger than the bow but-
"You're planning how you would kill me aren't you?"
First time doing a POV switch mid chapter, I hope it's not too off putting and I'll try to use it less.
