The Viridian City Gym is the first gym trainers encounter after leaving Pallet Town. Giovanni's fame as the Ground Gym Leader is well-known throughout the entire league.
Because of this, many trainers often gather outside the Viridian Gym, usually those collecting Pokémon badges and preparing to challenge the Indigo League.
Besides the gym, Heath thought the Pokémon Center might be the next place with the most trainers. However, considering the Pokémon Center was quite far from his location, he decided to go to the gym instead.
Upon arriving at the Viridian City Gym, Heath saw many trainers, some with Pidgey, some with Oddish, and even a few with Vileplume.
A peculiar smell wafted through the air, making Heath cover his mouth.
How could he forget that as the famous Ground Type Gym, most people would choose to bring Grass- and Water-type Pokémon?
Some trainers definitely had Gloom, a Pokémon known for its distinct smell. Gloom had the unfortunate reputation of being a Pokémon that couldn't be released in cities due to its odor.
Other problematic Pokémon included Grimer, Koffing, and those with excessive weight like Snorlax and Onix.
"If I had known, I would have brought a mask... This is awful." Heath touched the Pokéball at his waist but decided to set up his cart despite the smell to complete his task.
Due to Gloom's overwhelming smell, not many people felt like eating. Heath waited until the trainers with Gloom went inside to challenge the gym before serving his first customer.
These trainers seemed no different from his regular customers and weren't particularly difficult to serve. After a while, Heath had served nine customers.
Some customers gave him candy, while others gave nothing. Heath couldn't understand how his cheat determined the rewards.
"Hello, can you make food for Pokémon here?" a new voice asked. Heath looked up to see a somewhat arrogant boy wearing a necklace.
"Yes, but will your Pokémon be able to eat it?" Heath hesitated, noting that the boy looked about Ash's age.
Heath wasn't confident because he had discovered different Pokémon had varying taste preferences when he served Charizard. Not everyone liked fried rice or crepes, let alone Pokémon.
Heath couldn't please everyone like a super chef.
"I saw the trainers who bought your food were very satisfied. It should be fine," the boy said confidently.
Heath twitched his mouth. What was this boy thinking? Since the customer insisted, Heath didn't mind making food but wanted to know the boy's Pokémon first.
"What Pokémon do you have?" Heath asked. Pokémon had different taste preferences, and berries showed this clearly.
Not all Pokémon liked the same berries. Some were special cases, like Charizard, which preferred sweet flavors.
"I don't have a Pokémon yet! But with the food, I can catch one for sure!" the boy said confidently. Heath rolled his eyes—no Pokémon yet buying food?
"If you don't have Pokémon food, I can't guarantee it will help. Think it over," Heath said, shaking his head and not agreeing to the boy's request.
"I want a serving of fried rice!" The boy handed Heath fifteen League coins. Heath sighed.
Since the boy paid, Heath couldn't refuse. He made fried rice, put it in a box, and handed it to the boy, who then ran off excitedly.
Heath shook his head, guessing the boy wasn't a trainer yet. He didn't receive any mission completion notice, so he waited quietly at the gym entrance.
The gym was bustling, but many came out looking dejected, with only a few looking pleased. Heath could tell the results of their challenges by their expressions.
"Maybe Giovanni got fed up and decided to focus on running Team Rocket?" Heath mused, looking at the crowd. There were so many people.
[You served Green and received a Farfetch'd Candy]
The sudden notification startled Heath, almost making him drop the spatula on a customer. He glanced at the trainer, an older man.
How could this be Green? Heath had only given fried rice to one boy earlier—so that boy was Green?
Heath was confused but quickly prepared fried rice for the current customer, pocketing the cash.
[You served ten trainers and received a random important clue]
[Rumor has it that someone saw a very fast white figure in Viridian Forest]
Two notifications appeared, surprising Heath. Before he could think about it, more hungry trainers arrived, drawn by the delicious smell. Heath had to put the clue aside to serve them.
After selling all his food, it was still afternoon. Heath hurriedly packed up his cart and headed home.
"A very fast white figure? What could that be?" Heath wondered. Since the clue came from his cheat, it must be significant. But he couldn't figure out what it meant.
At least he had a location—Viridian Forest.
"Leek! Leek!" Farfetch'd flew around Heath, squawking persistently.
Heath felt a headache coming on. Farfetch'd was still determined to learn to make crepes. If Heath had Farfetch'd's perseverance, he would have aced his exams effortlessly.
"Alright, alright, I'll get you some later!" Heath said helplessly, placating Farfetch'd before considering the clue.
