"Isn't it great being in tier 10 already? With your kind of strength, you can save the whole world in no time!" Yukie cheered as Kaito sat on his bed looking down at his feet. What Yukie was saying was only empty compliments. He couldn't even use his powers correctly. It was that figure. It was only because of that figure he was able to enter this school, let alone escape the life he had previously. "Is everything alright, Kaito?" Yukie looked over at him.
"No," he covered his face. "Everything went wrong. I wasn't supposed go be here. I wasn't the reason for being on the top. I'm not even a power user. You want to know what even my grandfather told me?" Kaito looked over at Yukie. Yukie stared at him with a worried expression before he sighed. "He said you're the only family member without a power. According to the Shikichi history, your gift chose you. They chose you if you were meant to hold them. The power never chose me. Grandfather knew that. He knows everything."
"I'm sorry..." Yukie's voice lowered before she smiled and sat next to Kaito. "You want to know what I think?"
"What?" He didn't lift his eyes at all.
"What if the power did choose you?"
Looking up, Kaito looked at Yukie who was trying her best to stay positive, but it was useless. How could he stay positive if the whole world was telling his he was just a thing that shouldn't have existed?
"Yeah, right. If it did, then why can't I use it, huh?" Kaito wanted to cry, but it would be uncool on his part to cry in front of a girl. Well, his "Guardian Angel" at that.
"Well, that could be the case, but you fainted today, right? And you were able to use your power then. So doesn't that mean you have the gift in you? You just have to learn how to use it."
Kaito then remembered the words of the figure, "Let me train you." Was that figure actually the gift? Was that the gift choosing him?
"Wait," Kaito stood up and then laughed, "You might be on to something, Yukie. If the gift didn't choose me, then why would it want to train me?!"
"Yes! That's the spirit, Kaito! Learn from the figure!" Yukie hugged him, but then Kaito's eyes widened. He didn't recall ever telling Yukie about the "figure" he saw. Not only that, he remembered that Yukie disappeared during that time he fainted.
"Uh...Yukie?" Kaito backed away from the hug.
"Hmm?" Yukie tilted her head, her eyes shining underneath the sunlight that crept through the curtains of his window.
"Are you the gift?" He narrowed his eyes. "I never said anything about the figure. So...how did you know about the figure?"
Yukie bit her bottom lip as she looked around the room, thinking of something to say. "Uh...well, you see..."
"Could it be that you're that figure?" Kaito didn't avert his eyes. He needed to know if she was or not. Was it because the gift randomly chose him that she showed up? No. That wouldn't have made sense since the gift chose you when you were 10-years-old. The gift didn't choose him then, so why did it decide to choose him now? "Please tell me, Yukie?"
Breaking, Yukie nodded her head. "Yes. I'm that figure. No one could see me until that day I became 'you,' Kaito. I thought you were going to die, so I had to save you. It was my only chance. Please, don't be afraid of me." She held her breath before closing her eyes, ready for whatever Kaito was going to say to her.
However, Kaito just patted her head. "Thank you for telling me, Yukie. Although it's still confusing who on earth you are and why you're able to become me, please do what you said back there."
"Train you?" Yukie started breathing again and looked up at him. A smile then crept up onto her face. "Of course! I'll do my best to help you, Kaito. You can trust me!"
Kaito's heart filled with warmth once seeing her smile again. He couldn't quite put his finger on it, but it seemed like she was comforting to him. Every time she smiled. Every time she talked. Just her being near him comforted him. She was, indeed, his "Guardian Angel" protecting him. Gift or not, he was glad she was here.
