Chương 7: Chapter 7: The Secret Identity

I looked at Ruby, confused. "I am in—what?"

"Board of Directors."

I didn't even know what that meant!

"Oh! Oh." I tried to act naturally.

"Just oh? Girl, you'll be sitting among the top authorities of this company and beyond. How the hell did you pull this off?"

"I have no idea!" I replied truthfully.

She didn't seem to buy that. Her face turned from happy to jealous and bitchy real quick. "What is so special that you can't tell me? I thought we were friends!"

I sighed. "I really have no idea."

"I don't want to be friends with liars."

I looked at her as she walked away and I was alone in the cafeteria. I sighed loudly. I didn't even do anything. I had no idea why this was happening to me.

I read the message again and realized that I had to work on a project. It included research on various business issues our company was facing, and about the deals that could be possibly beneficial for the future.

I was unaware of how this all would work, but I got an idea about it. So, I didn't have any other options than to go and do the work mentioned — since the meeting was set to be tomorrow. The staff meeting, the day after tomorrow, would be more like an announcement.

I would actually be in the decision-making. Sounded awesome until I re-realized that the decisions were for Xavier's company.

Wait.

Wouldn't it be an awesome way to help make the worst decisions for the company?

If he faces a huge loss, maybe he would sell me back to dad to get his three million dollars.

That sounded weird but it was amazing.

I was so doing this!

I called Drew as soon as I saw the time and realized he would be at home. After making sure he was okay and alone, I continued working — after warning him not to let anyone, including Xavier, inside.

It was only for a day. I would hire a babysitter today and then; I wouldn't have to worry about him.

As I almost completed working for the day, I realized that Xavier wasn't present in the company all day. Of course, I was happy about that — but I was afraid of where he was.

It was like what happens when we see a lizard. If it is in front of our eyes, it is still okay. The second it disappears, it turns into your worst nightmare!

I sighed and as soon as the beep resounded in the company to show that it was time to call it a day, I packed my stuff and prepared to leave.

The news of me being on the Board of Directors spread fast. It was written all over the notice board and it really scared me. No one really wanted to talk to me and it was, like, the worst feeling in the world.

I just didn't care. After leaving the house, I came home as soon as I could and was glad to find Drew okay. I quickly hired a good babysitter for him and somehow, managed to juggle her salary out of my monthly income.

I started working again as I didn't want to mess up anything.

"You must be really talented to make it to this level at such a young age. What are you, 25?" One of the older men at the meeting asked me.

I was sitting in a chair that marked the boundary of a long table. Only two older men and I were present at the moment.

"Yes," I replied.

The people didn't seem pleased with me. Of course, they wouldn't be. They took so many years to come here and somehow, a newbie like me, got a place.

Another pair of men joined the room, and I was given a few more weird faces. I wanted to just hide forever because the awkwardness was really uncomfortable. Two women joined others to give me a similar glare. For the first time, I wanted Xavier to show up — maybe when he does, they'll stop looking at me like I am a sheep.

He did.

After just five minutes of thinking, a dominating man entered the room. Everyone stood up and I followed.

I slowly looked at him. His blue suit and white shirt looked dashing and his hairstyle was different — he had spiked them, a little.

His eyes held the domination and his aura was tempting. I looked down, so it didn't look weird.

"Good morning, everyone." His deep voice meant business.

Everyone sat down and I did the same. However, I could feel his eyes on me after a while. I looked back at him — finally — and he smirked.

"...and so, this deal would—"

"Stop." Xavier stopped one of those men, who was speaking something about a deal. My mind was focused on him, but I acted like I didn't care — and looked down again.

"I forgot to introduce the new member."

My eyes shot towards him as I realized he mentioned me. He stood up, which made everyone stand up too. He came toward me and my heartbeat increased.

"You all must be wondering how a newbie could make it to the Board of the Directors," His powerful voice resounded in the room, followed by slow murmuring. "Well. Meet Scarlett Walker, the mother to my child."
