"What do you mean five days?" Yosaku asked Usopp, who was sitting next to him. "What five days? You've been gone for almost a month!"
"Almost a month?" Usopp looked at Yosaku as if he were an idiot. "One day to Gaimon, a few hours on the island, a few hours to Baratie, and four days at the restaurant, which means you were gone for just five days... what month?"
"......."
"I knew it couldn't be that simple," Johnny sighed with almost palpable relief, while Yosaku was at a loss for words.
The conversation immediately drew the attention of the rest of the crew, and Nami, who had noticed Luffy attempting to say something, quickly covered his mouth with her hand, preventing him from speaking a word. Luffy groaned indignantly but did nothing more, which effectively gave Usopp the freedom to be questioned.
"Usopp, are you saying that only five days have passed for you?" asked Nami.
"What do you mean "for me"? Five days are five days!"
"Hmm…" Yosaku voiced the general sentiment.
"Okay, let's figure this out," Johnny took charge of the situation without delay, his excessive curiosity having long been beyond control. "Did I understand correctly that, according to you, only five days have passed since we parted ways?"
"...Are you trying to convince me that it hasn't been five days but nearly a whole month?" Usopp asked suspiciously. "Do you really think I'm going to believe such nonsense?" Usopp scoffed disdainfully.
"....."
"So, you've been training only for a couple of days, and only after your arrival at Baratie?" Yosaku asked, as Johnny, like him earlier, found himself at a loss for words.
"Well, yeah... so what?"
"Are you saying you mastered Observation Haki in just a few days, simply by swimming around the restaurant with a small load?" Yosaku smirked.
"Hey, the load is quite big!" Usopp retorted indignantly.
After all, Luffy had made him swim with special weights totaling half a ton... Frankly, Usopp hadn't known before that he was even capable of such a feat. Just a week ago, he struggled to lift a hundred kilograms off the ground, and now he managed to swim with an extra half-ton weight. And although he didn't understand how it was possible, reality spoke for itself.
"Fine, let's say it's big," Yosaku nodded, "but what about Observation Haki?"
"What's this Haki thing?"
"...."
"You managed to dodge a kick from Sanji, and you don't know what Observation Haki is?" Johnny asked, while Yosaku stared at the long-nosed guy with unblinking eyes.
"What does some Haki have to do with it?" Usopp asked in confusion. "They tried to kick me in the head, of course, I dodged it! Anyone would dodge it!"
"And how did you do that?"
"What do you mean? He tried to kick me in the head, so I dodged."
"...What did you do to him?" Zoro finally voiced the general thoughts, looking at Luffy. "He uses Observation Haki but doesn't understand that he's using it? Is that even possible?"
"Of course not!" Luffy answered cheerfully as Nami slightly opened his mouth.
"Then how does he do it?" Sanji pointed at the clearly confused Usopp. "This isn't a random use of Observation Haki; it's a full-fledged skill."
"How does he do it?" Luffy raised an eyebrow. "He just does it!"
"....."
"If he understands everything, how can he not know what Observation Haki is?" Zoro voiced the common thoughts again. "It's essentially foresight... how can you not understand that you have foresight?"
A smug expression appeared on Luffy's face, as if he were saying, 'I know something you don't, but I'm not going to tell you!' However, as soon as Nami realized that they wouldn't get any more out of him and covered his mouth again, his smug expression was replaced by that of an unjustly aggrieved puppy... at least, his eyes looked exactly like that!
The rest of the crew immediately tried to figure out what Luffy had managed to do with Usopp, but, as expected, didn't achieve any significant results. However, they managed to find out that, firstly, Luffy hadn't told Usopp about Observation Haki, and secondly, despite the fact that the long-nosed guy was very successfully using Observation Haki, he didn't understand it the same way Zoro did.
For the swordsman, using Observation Haki was akin to foresight—indeed, that's how it should be—but Usopp couldn't distinguish his foresight from reality. In other words, from his perspective, he dodged attacks not because he foresaw them, but because he saw them. And it was impossible to convince him otherwise. In theory, one could show intent without actually striking, allowing Usopp to dodge the nonexistent attack and thus prove his foresight ability. However, in practice, as always, it proved to be somewhat more complicated.
Firstly, no one without Observation Haki could consciously deceive someone who had it; that is, except for Luffy and Zoro, no one in the crew could deceive Usopp. And while that was fine, it quickly became apparent that the long-nosed guy saw further — or perhaps more accurately, deeper? — than Zoro, meaning Usopp only reacted to real attacks, completely ignoring false intents... and that was beyond the Good and Evil! However, before everyone fully believed in the "Black Injustice of the World," Johnny uttered a profound phrase:
"Even for the story of the little engine that could, this result is too much!" said the guy with a wild mix of offense, irritation, anger, and despair in his voice.
The effect was instantaneous. Before anyone could understand what was happening, Usopp's face turned whiter than chalk and then began to rapidly turn a very unhealthy shade of blue. Large beads of sweat appeared on the forehead of the now ghastly Usopp, but the most important thing was the look in his eyes. The momentary bewilderment — as if the guy didn't understand what was happening to him… most likely because he really didn't — quickly gave way to mounting terror. Usopp's gaze lost its clarity, his mouth began to open in a silent scream of horror, as if he saw something that others couldn't see... Before the frightening metamorphosis could go any further, a fork flew into his forehead. It struck quite hard — enough to draw blood and snap the long-nosed guy out of his terrifying trance.
"Three-four! Three-four! We're going on vacation! Usopp, come in! Come in, do you hear me?" said a beaming Luffy.
The guy was smiling so broadly that his eyes turned into tiny slits, while Luffy effortlessly held a desperately wriggling Nami under his arm, with his hand covering her mouth. However, Nami's wriggling soon ceased when she realized that resistance was futile. She stood still, frowning in displeasure.
"Huh?" Usopp, still deathly pale, responded with some delay.
"You want to sleep," Luffy declared with a firm voice, still grinning widely... the others were getting chills from his smile, as it looked disgustingly fake.
"I want to sleep?" Usopp asked in confusion, being the only one unable to fully grasp the situation due to his condition.
"You want to sleep," Luffy confirmed with a nod of his head.
"I want to sleep," Usopp agreed, nodding his head, and, getting up from the table, wandered somewhat lost toward the restaurant's entrance, where he soon disappeared.
A long and uncomfortable silence followed, during which everyone couldn't take their eyes off the door through which Usopp had disappeared. Then, the whole crew, almost as if on some unheard signal, turned their attention to Luffy... who, for once, clearly felt guilty.
