Ivo felt the ticking by of the seconds acutely. He was aware of the most minute detail; from the expanding of his chest with each breath, to the soreness of his muscles after a week of non-stop training.

When he licked his lips it seemed to him he could taste the air, stale and saturated with antiseptic.

He worried that this extra awareness meant that some primal part of his mind knew he might not be alive for much longer.
