In the second half, the Kings were in a more dire situation regarding available players compared to the Suns.
Cousins and Gay were the undisputed starters, and while Landry was a bench player, he was still a formidable sixth man. With these three players ejected, the Kings instantly became a team at the level of a G League squad.
It was up to Isaiah Thomas to lead a group of water-boy-level players against the Suns, who still had Wade Dong.
The second half began.
"Beat it!"
"Beat it!"
"Beat it!"
The home crowd was fired up, their adrenaline pumping from the earlier scuffle.
"Boo~~~"
The Kings players were met with boos from the home crowd every time they touched the ball.
Isaiah Thomas dribbled up the court and passed to McLemore, who was open for a mid-range shot. McLemore, facing the defense of Wade Dong, felt nervous. He tried to pass the ball back, but it was intercepted by Wade Dong.
After the steal, Wade Dong drove to the frontcourt.
Isaiah Thomas chased after Wade Dong but couldn't keep up as Wade Dong went straight to the basket for a powerful windmill dunk.
The score was now 53-25.
The Suns had built a 28-point lead.
At this point, the game was already in garbage time, but Wade Dong couldn't come out because the Suns had six players ejected, leaving them with only a few available players.
In the Suns' locker room,
Durant and five others were gathered, smoking cigars. They weren't concerned about the outcome of the game and were quite relaxed.
"Dong is going to blow the Kings out in the second half!"
"I think Dong is just coasting. The lineup on the court doesn't pose any challenge to him."
"But Cousins really pissed him off."
"You guys don't know Dong's temper. Whether it's towards people or situations, he won't take it out on the other Kings players now that Cousins is out."
The six ejected players were having a good time, and Durant was intrigued. He turned to the other five, "Let's make a bet on how many points Dong will score tonight."
"How much?"
Curry asked, clearly interested in the bet.
Without hesitation, Durant said, "Five hundred bucks!"
"Five hundred???"
Curry was taken aback by Durant's boldness but quickly agreed, "I'm in."
"We want in too!"
McCollum and the others had been hesitant, worried that Durant might suggest a bet of a few thousand dollars, which they couldn't afford. But with only five hundred dollars at stake, they were game.
"I bet Dong will score 37 points tonight," said Durant.
"Fifty points," said McCollum.
"Forty points," Barton chimed in.
"Forty-seven points," added Tucker.
After the first four players made their bets, only Curry and Green were left. Curry hesitated for a moment, "Dong won't need to exert himself in the second half, so I guess he'll score around 30 points just for fun."
"One hundred and one points!"
The last bet came from Green, who confidently declared, "Dong will blow the Kings out and score 88 points in the second half, breaking Chamberlain's single-game scoring record."
"Whew..."
"Hahaha..."
Durant and the others burst into laughter. Green's prediction was so outlandish; he clearly didn't want to win the money.
A single-game score of 101 points was already mythical. With Wade Dong having only 13 points in the first half, how could he possibly score 88 points in the second half? It was impossible, even if the Kings were a G League team; they were still professional NBA players, not kindergarteners.
After the six players agreed on their bets, they waited in the locker room for the game to finish.
Whoever guessed the closest to Wade Dong's final score would win two thousand five hundred dollars.
...
"BEEP!!!"
The game ended with the referee's whistle.
The Suns won by a score of 119-53, a 66-point blowout at home.
This margin of victory wasn't particularly large, as the Suns held the record for the biggest margin of victory, and six of the top ten most lopsided wins were held by the Suns.
"Dong is amazing!"
"Holy sh*t!!!"
"There's no one in the entire league who can match Dong's brilliance!"
"I'm willing to call Dong the God of Basketball!"
Durant and the five others eagerly awaited their teammates' return to the locker room. The players came back, chattering excitedly, their faces glowing with excitement as if they had just witnessed an unbelievable game.
This made Durant and the others even more curious. As soon as Vareck entered the locker room, Durant grabbed him, "Quick, tell me, how many points did Dong score tonight?"
"You'll never guess what Dong did in the second half."
Vareck teased, "If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn't have believed it even if someone told me!"
"How many points did Dong score?"
Durant asked again, a bit anxiously.
From Vareck's reaction, it was clear that Wade Dong had put on another incredible performance. Could it be that Wade Dong really scored 101 points in a single game?
If Green won the bet... that would be ridiculous.
As soon as Thompson entered the locker room, he shouted, "Curry, you missed Dong's performance in the second half. It's a shame you'll never get to see it again!"
"How many points did Dong score?"
Even Curry was stunned.
Soon after, Carter, Yi Nan, Whiteside, and McGrady returned to the locker room, their faces full of emotion.
But they didn't say a word.
This left Durant and the others scratching their heads in confusion. They waited until Gentry and Wade Dong returned to the locker room, laughing and chatting. Durant grabbed Wade Dong's wrist and asked, "Come on, tell me, how many points did you score tonight?"
"How many points did I score?"
Wade Dong shrugged, "I haven't checked yet, but probably around twenty or thirty."
"Twenty or thirty points? And that's why these guys look like they just watched a striptease?"
Durant was skeptical. He grabbed the stat sheet from the assistant coach and was stunned by Wade Dong's numbers.
Game Stats:
Wade Dong: 30 points, 17 rebounds, 23 assists, 3 blocks, 21 steals.
Yi Nan: 27 points, 11 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 blocks, 0 steals.
...
"These stats can't be real!"
Durant couldn't believe the authenticity of the stats, "21 steals? How is that even possible?"
Vareck explained, "We wouldn't have believed it either if we hadn't seen it with our own eyes. You have no idea... the Kings' perimeter players couldn't even dribble. As soon as they got the ball, Dong would steal it!"
The NBA record for steals in a single game was 11, held by three players.
In this game, Wade Dong shattered that record, raising it from 11 to 21 steals. This became a more terrifying record than Chamberlain's 100-point game.
Although the teammates and coaches confirmed the authenticity of the stat sheet, Durant couldn't wrap his head around how Wade Dong managed to rack up 19 steals in just 24 minutes of the second half.
Carter summed it up, "I call it the most unbelievable quadruple-double in history!"
