"Defense! Defense!"
After Wade Dong scored, he waved for his teammates to quickly get into position.
Since the Spurs liked to play a slow-paced game, the Suns were ready to defend against their set plays.
Parker dribbled to the frontcourt and, at the top of the arc, passed to Diaw in the paint. Diaw backed down Gortat, took a step towards the basket, and saw Bonner open at the corner.
"Leonard, catch the ball!"
Diaw shouted and passed the ball towards Bonner.
"Slap!"
Wade Dong swiped the ball away from Bonner as he was catching it and then turned back with a smirk, "That's just a kid's trick."
After saying this, Wade Dong dribbled to the frontcourt!
Facing Leonard's help defense, Wade Dong faked a move, spun, and made a layup with an underhand scoop.
Score: 72:62!!!
At the beginning of the second half, Wade Dong scored five consecutive points, bringing the lead back to double digits.
"Timeout!"
Popovich immediately called a timeout to re-strategize.
Each team had seven timeouts per game, and these timeouts were called by the players. Popovich shouting 'timeout' was a signal for the players to call a timeout.
After using this timeout, the Spurs had only two timeouts left.
...
After the timeout, Leonard and Mills started double-teaming Wade Dong.
Wade Dong was the Suns' engine and offensive core. In this game, the Spurs' offense and defense were flawless, so as long as they shut down Wade Dong, they still had a chance to win.
In the backcourt, Leonard and Mills stuck to Wade Dong like glue, making it difficult for him even to receive the baseline inbound pass.
"Damn..."
Kevin Durant, standing at the baseline, sighed as he watched Wade Dong's treatment.
Klay Thompson had to run back to the backcourt. Durant inbounded the ball to Thompson, who waited for Durant to cross half-court before passing it back to him.
Wherever Wade Dong went, Leonard and Mills followed.
In the next three minutes, Wade Dong didn't even touch the ball... especially since Curry was not on the court, leaving the Suns' offense in disarray.
The Suns' style was small-ball.
No matter how strong the other positions were, the point guard was still the Suns' core.
After Wade Dong was double-teamed by Leonard and Mills, the next few offensive possessions were all Durant isolations!
The Spurs' role players also kept scoring.
The deficit was reduced to 5 points... Facing such intense defense from Leonard and Mills, Wade Dong simply ran around the court, as he was never afraid of a physical battle.
The third quarter ended.
Score: 92:89!!!
The Spurs trailed by 3 points.
Wade Dong looked at the exhausted Leonard and Mills and asked with a smile, "Tired?"
...
The fourth quarter began.
Wade Dong stayed on the court, but Popovich couldn't let Leonard and Mills continue defending Wade Dong like this; they might get muscle cramps if they kept running.
Wade Dong had only scored 5 points in the third quarter.
At the start of the fourth quarter, Wade Dong received the baseline inbound pass, dribbled to the frontcourt, and, with the Spurs' bench players just getting into position, Wade Dong accelerated through the gap between Bonner and Diaw. Facing Baynes under the basket, Wade Dong took off with his left foot and soared!
"Bang!!!"
He avoided Baynes' block with a tomahawk dunk!
Then, the Spurs missed a shot, and Whiteside grabbed the defensive rebound, passing it to Wade Dong.
Wade Dong dribbled to the three-point line and pulled up for a three-pointer.
"Swoosh!!!"
The ball swished through the net.
The Spurs inbounded the ball from the baseline, and Ginobili drove to the basket but was disrupted by Durant. His layup attempt missed.
Wade Dong grabbed the defensive rebound.
He then moved to the three-point line, took a step-back three-pointer, and...
"Swoosh!!!"
Another one!
On the fourth attempt, Wade Dong received the ball at the corner three, faked a move past Bonner, drove to the basket, and...
Under the basket...
Wade Dong made another tomahawk dunk!
Then...
Wade Dong hit another three-pointer.
Score: 105:89!!!
In just two minutes, Wade Dong scored 13 consecutive points, making 5 out of 5 shots, including three three-pointers and two dunks, to force a timeout.
...
"Three-pointer... made!"
"Can't stop him!"
"Explosive dunk!"
"This is MVP-level play!"
Even though he was commentating in the Spurs' home arena, Barkley was thrilled, exclaiming with each of Wade Dong's baskets.
"Wade Dong is the strongest player in the world!"
Shaquille O'Neal was also impressed, "It's a good thing I was born early. If I were in the same era as Wade Dong, I might never have won a championship!"
Barkley smiled, "You know how difficult it was for us back then?"
"It's not like I never faced Michael Jordan..."
O'Neal retorted, "You didn't win a championship because you were too weak."
Barkley, "I'll beat you up!"
For Barkley, O'Neal was just lucky to be born at the right time. From 1990 to 2000, those ten years were dominated by Michael Jordan, and after 2012, the league belonged to Wade Dong. O'Neal's prime was right in the middle of those ten years.
Moreover, Barkley often joked that O'Neal's only real opponent was Tim Duncan.
During those ten years, O'Neal had been teammates with Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, and Steve Nash... not exactly opponents.
...
Trailing by 16 points, Popovich sighed and told Leonard and Parker, who were preparing to come in, to sit back down. He was ready to give up on this game.
After Wade Dong's three consecutive three-pointers, he walked over to the little girl and smiled, "Your Barbie doll, please sign for it."
"Uncle, you're lying!"
The little girl pouted, "You only scored 36 points after the second quarter. You need 46 points."
"M-country people can't count; it's probably a genetic issue, not an educational one."
Wade Dong muttered, pinching the girl's chubby cheek, "Then Uncle will get ten more points."
Wade Dong came off the court with three minutes left in the fourth quarter.
"Beep!!!"
With the referee's whistle, the game ended.
Score: 127:103!!!
The Suns won by 24 points on the road, outscoring the Spurs by 21 points in the fourth quarter.
Wade Dong went 31-for-25, scoring 70 points.
