Chương 44: Asking for Training
Waking up in a bed, Ryo nearly jumped out of it, remembering what had happened. "Kentou-sensei!" Ryo quickly looked around, realizing he was in the hospital once again, this time as a patient. He assessed his condition and sensed his chakra; not much time had passed, and he already had half of his chakra back.
Summoning the nurse, they conversed for a moment, and soon he was cleared to leave, having only fainted due to chakra exhaustion and not requiring any further procedures. Upon receiving clearance, Ryo changed into his regular clothes, noticing blood stains on his pants from when he had knelt on the ground.
Letting out a sigh, he made his way to the hospital reception, inquiring about a patient named Kentou. The receptionist provided the room number but mentioned that visitors were not allowed yet.
Upon hearing this, Ryo widened his eyes and slid down to the floor, hitting his knees. Breathing a sigh of relief, he exclaimed, "He's going to be okay! I managed to save him!" Speaking with a tone of happiness, Ryo then got up. "When will he be able to receive visitors?" The receptionist replied, "I'm not sure. The patient is still in a coma due to the traumas from the combat and chakra exhaustion. The doctors don't know how long he'll remain in this state."
Upon hearing about Kentou's coma, Ryo felt a chill in his stomach. Knowing it was caused by severe trauma and chakra depletion, he realized Kentou could wake up in a day or two—or never wake up at all.
"Thank you," Ryo said before leaving the hospital. He was relieved to have saved someone important to him but knew there would be more instances where he'd have to do the same, to save more people, more friends.
Fortunately, Ryo was now trained enough to perform such tasks, but he wasn't sure if he'd be prepared next time. Looking up at the sky, he thought, "I have to convince Tsunade to train me!" He had to achieve that, just as Sakura had become the best medical ninja in the future through training with one of the Sannin.
Ryo returned home and sat on his bed, holding the two coins in his hand as he contemplated. "I didn't receive anything overpowered directly, and even though you two already have a significant amount of chakra, without these coins, Kentou might have died." Clenching his fist around the coins, Ryo crossed his legs to begin meditating, focusing on replenishing his depleted chakra reserves.
During meditation, he noticed something he had overlooked: his chakra had increased by 5% from the previous day. "5%? How did it increase so much? It usually takes me a couple of weeks to achieve this. And lately, it's been decreasing," Ryo thought. He attributed it to stress and the significant chakra expenditure in a short amount of time. "Does expending a lot of chakra to the point of almost dying increase the total like this? Not that I want to experience that again. It's too dangerous."
He nodded to himself, deciding he'd only do something like that again if he were certain he wouldn't die while unconscious or if nobody around him would die, as was the case with Kentou.
The next day, Ryo received a summons to the Hokage's office once again. Upon entering, he saw the Hokage seated, smoking his long pipe. "Hokage-sama, I'm here," Ryo greeted.
"You did very well, Ryo. I read the report from the medical ninjas who took over Kentou's case. You stabilized, cleaned, and sutured the most dangerous wound before they even arrived. Without that, we would have lost him to those mysterious ninjas," the Hokage praised.
Upon hearing about the mysterious ninjas, Ryo clenched his fists. "Hokage-sama, do we know who was responsible for this? Why would they target Kentou-sensei within our territory? Was this an assassination attempt?" There was a tone of anger in Ryo's voice as he spoke.
"We only know it was someone from the Land of Iron, perhaps a group of nukenins who targeted Kentou because of his past missions. His bounty exceeds 15 million ryo per hour, as far as we can deduce for now. Further investigation will be conducted, but I can't tell you more at the moment," the Hokage explained.
He took another puff of his pipe before continuing, "I called you here because what you did, the surgery, was nearly perfect given the circumstances. And you used the coins in a creative way to save Kentou." Ryo nodded in acknowledgment.
"I was already looking for a new medical ninja to train you, and I found a good one for you, Ryo. He's the head of the hospital, a seasoned medical ninja. You know him already, I imagine," the Hokage said.
Yes, Ryo knew him, but he didn't want that. Looking at the Hokage, he spoke with determination, "I know him, but I don't want him as my new teacher, Hokage-sama. I know who I want to train under."
"Oh, you already have someone in mind? Then tell me who it is, and I'll do what I can to help," the Hokage replied. As he said that, Ryo spoke with a serious tone, "I want to train under the legendary Sannin Tsunade! She's the best medical ninja there is." He was dead serious as he said this.
"Tsunade?" The Hokage coughed a few times, taken aback by Ryo's request. He had never expected Ryo to ask for Tsunade.
"It's complicated, Ryo. Tsunade is currently out of the village, and I don't know when she'll return. But I'll try to get in touch with her. In the meantime, continue your training. The year is almost ending, and I hope you're focused," the Hokage said.
While Hiruzen didn't deny Ryo's request, he didn't exactly confirm it either. Regardless, Ryo knew that if Hiruzen said he would try, it meant he already had a plan in mind. With a smile, Ryo replied, "You can count on me, Hokage-sama! I'm training every day without fail." And with that, Ryo left the office, heading back to the ninja academy.
With not much left to do at the academy, Ryo was eager to finish the year quickly so he could gain more access to new ninjutsu techniques. He also hoped to train with Tsunade, perhaps spending one or two years under her guidance. However, he knew he would have to convince the old woman to step away from gambling and drinking in order to be trained by her. Yet, he already had a vague idea of how to do that.
