"I" was all Naruto said, stepping forward from the crowd. Some chuckled at the sight of the young boy wanting to participate.
"Better go change your diapers, kid!" Wao taunted, his words earning more laughter and mockery from the spectators.
"Are you scared the chubby guy might win?" Naruto retorted with a mocking tone, making Wao frown.
"You asked for it... get up there and fight."
Silently, Naruto ascended the battle arena steps, approaching the old man who worked for Wao. The old man was busy cleaning up the blood from the previous unfortunate contestant who had tried to win this survival tournament.
Taking a deep breath, Naruto focused on his goal: to win. His determined gaze swept over the eager crowd surrounding him, all anticipating the impending 'massacre.'
"Our new challenger is a fighter aiming for the 10,000 gold coin prize! If he can defeat all opponents in his path, he'll take it all!" Wao's voice echoed from a platform above the battle arena, where he observed with a smug grin. He signaled to the old man, who was stationed beside the lever that controlled a descending steel cage.
"Go for it, brother!" Dororo's shout came from among the spectators. The steel cage descended from the ceiling, enclosing Naruto. Although Dororo believed in Naruto's strength, he knew the history of this brutal tournament—no one had ever emerged victorious in all the years it had run.
"Place your bets against the house!" yelled a voice from the betting section, prompting the gamblers to eagerly wager their money on the belief that the young boy wouldn't last past the first round.
Taking a deep breath, Naruto felt his hands tremble with nervousness. This situation was different from the Chunnin exams. How strong would his opponents be? What if he lost? Pushing those thoughts aside, he closed his eyes and focused as much as he could. When he heard the gate open, he snapped his eyes open.
His first opponent stood before him – a tall and thin figure with a frail appearance. The man had long, spiky dark hair and was dressed in torn and worn-out clothes. What caught Naruto's attention the most, though, was the strange Oni mask completely covering the man's face. Adding to the peculiar image, the man's wrists bore metal claws that looked rusty and carried suspicious dried stains.
"The participant must follow the rules! No weapons in the ring, and no manipulation of elements like water, fire, or earth! Violating these rules will lead to disqualification!" The owner of the place announced, striking a gong next to him. The spectators cheered in anticipation, and then he continued, "Let the battle begin!" With that, the fight everyone had been waiting for finally commenced, signaled by the man in the suit and hat.
"Woah!" Naruto exclaimed in surprise as his opponent lunged at him with remarkable speed. The rusty claws aimed for vital points in quick, thrusting motions. Dodging backwards, Naruto managed to evade several of the man's attacks. Finding a moment to strike back, he seized one of the masked man's arms. Utilizing his agility and shorter stature, Naruto twisted the arm and forcefully threw his opponent against the steel cage.
The crash of the body against the steel bars echoed through the arena, and spectators watched as Naruto's first opponent fell, defeated and unmoving. The unexpected outcome surprised many. "Nice job, Naruto! You're doing great!" Dororo's enthusiastic voice broke the awkward silence, offering words of praise to his pre-adolescent friend who was now standing triumphantly in the ring.
"It wasn't that tough," Naruto replied, a smirk tugging at his lips as he playfully raised his thumb in Dororo's direction. This caused Wao's expression to shift into a frown.
"Not bad, kid! But this is just the beginning! Next round!" Wao's declaration prompted the cage to open once more, releasing Naruto's next opponent. This time, a large man clad in heavy armor and a spiked mask entered the ring. Without a moment's hesitation, he let out a war cry and charged forward, raising his weapon with the intention of landing a powerful blow.
Naruto swiftly evaded the attack, leaping into action. He delivered a horizontal kick aimed at the fighter's head. However, the blow barely budged the hulking opponent. In a surprising move, the giant seized Naruto's leg, slamming him forcefully onto the ground. Gasping in pain, Naruto quickly scrambled back onto his feet, his back aching from the impact. He dodged and weaved, evading every strike the giant aimed his way.
Quickly devising a new plan, Naruto sprinted toward his opponent. In a split-second decision, he leaped and ducked under the fighter's legs, maneuvering behind him. With determination, Naruto delivered a solid right-hand blow to the giant's vulnerable spot(right between the legs), causing him to wince in pain.
"Hmmmm!" The man in armor let out a groan as he dropped to his knees. Acting swiftly, Naruto seized the hefty object his opponent had relinquished. Displaying an impressive show of strength, he swung the object like a hammer, delivering a devastating blow to the center of the giant's chest. The man attempted to rise but was sent hurtling through the air, crashing onto the ground and losing consciousness.
"Bhuuuuu!" The gamblers in the crowd expressed their displeasure with boos as their chosen fighter faced defeat, resulting in substantial losses for them. Meanwhile, non-gambling spectators cheered for Naruto, recognizing his natural fighting prowess.
"Ufff." Naruto let out a sigh of relief as he set down the makeshift mallet, a smile playing on his lips. While he acknowledged that his last move might have been considered underhanded, he also knew that low blows were not against the rules. Glancing around the arena, he caught sight of Wao wearing an annoyed expression. "Is that all you've got, egg man? I was expecting more!" Naruto taunted, though his grin faltered when he noticed the self-assured smile on the arena's sponsor.
"Be cautious about what you ask for, boy…" The sound of the gate opening drew everyone's attention once again. This time, two figures entered the arena: two women who bore a striking resemblance to each other. Clad in dark suits that resembled the armor of geisha warriors, these twins stood apart by forgoing makeup to cover their faces. "Allow me to introduce the Kyoujin twins, masters of the blade and former geishas who served a prominent lord of Ba Sing Se..."
"If you value your life..."
"You'd better retreat…"
