Chương 58: system’s origin

As Alex ascended the stages one after the other, different races of monsters started to appear.

One stage at a time, the number and level of the monsters of each race started to grow, and soon, Alex had to encounter ten of them in one stage.

But thankfully, Alex's stats also went up as difficulty went up.

He was now even more powerful than when he started the quest.

His stats were so up that he was even able to defeat the level 30 epic cyclops that appeared in the 30th stage without much difficulty. The only problem he encountered there was the number of the cyclops and their boss, which was level 50 and gave Alex a really, really hard time.

Like the other two sets of stairs that he had to climb after finishing the 10th and 20th stage, climbing the 30th set of stairs was also an arduous task.

If one had to ask Alex, he preferred to fight that level 50 cyclops a hundred times and not climb that freaking stair even once.

With every step he took, Alex wanted to quit the dammed quest more and more, but then he remembered the improvements to his body and took another step.

Thankfully, the rewards he gained from climbing the 30th staircase were exactly what Alex expected and even more.

Alex stood there in front of the last stair with a grin on his face, but before he could shout in happiness and jump up, a voice interrupted him.

"Congratulations on reaching here," said a very deep voice.

Alex looked around, trying to find the source of the voice, but it seemed like the voice was coming from everywhere around him.

"Are you scared??" the voice asked.

"a little, yes," Alex confessed.

"hehe, I see you are an honest one. Let me introduce myself," the voice said, and a monstrous scaled body started to appear out of nowhere in front of Alex.

From the tip of his scaly tale to the top of his scaly head, the thing in front of him was at the very least fifty meters long. Its head was raised into the sky, and Alex had to take a few steps back to see it clearly.

Two red leather wings were stretched out from its back, and it looked like it could blow Alex away with only a flap of its gigantic wings.

"I'm Aslan, the last true survivor of the dragon race," the dragon said and brought his giant head near Alex and covered all his view.

"A, A dragon?? How can you be here??" Alex asked in astonishment, "do I have to defeat you??"

Alex was truly scared to the bone.

The blazing red dragon laughed as if Alex had just said the most hilarious joke in the world, and a big drop of tear slid down its face from hard laughter.

Even though he was scared shitless, Alex couldn't help but think, 'such a waste, just that one drop of tear worth more than any legendary ingredient out there.'

The dragon finally stopped laughing and looked at Alex with amusement in his eyes and said, "kid, who do you think you are? You can't fight me even if I used one-hundredth of a percent of my power."

"what then? Are you here to make fun of me before killing me?" Alex asked with an irritated voice.

"Watch your tone, young man, or I will forget about my revenge and just eat you alive and make sure you wouldn't live another day even in your real world."

"can- can you do that?" Alex took a step back, scared for his life.

"of course, I can. Don't underestimate us dragons; even that shitty robotic race couldn't control us with their wired ways." Aslan said.

"what are you doing here then?" asked Alex.

"I'm here because I have a deal with those bastards; if I kill you, they will let me go."

"what do you mean they will let you go? Aren't you just an NPC?"

"well, for you that don't know anything, I guess I'm nothing more than an NPC, but where do you think the NPCs come from?" Aslan asked.

As Alex was thinking about his answer, he noticed that something was amiss.

NPCs weren't supposed to have self-awareness. They weren't supposed to know what an NPC was or that they were one.

"doesn't the system generate them?" Alex asked with suspension.

"to some extent, you are correct, but that's not all there is to it." Aslan said and then continued explaining without Alex asking for one, "you see, there isn't only one world, as there isn't only one system out there.

Some NPCs are indeed made by the system to give out quests and other things, but what you don't know yet is that we are just pawns in their dirty little twisted game."

"who is "they" you keep talking about?" asked Alex, a little bit confused by the whole matter.

"oh, sorry. Let me start from the beginning." Aslan apologized and started telling a story that blew Alex's mind away.

There were many races out there. Some powerful, some weak, but they each lived in their own world and their own dimension and didn't know about each other's existence.

That was until one of these races possessing a mysterious system started invading the other worlds.

They were like a hive. After invading a world, they would scatter their body all over that world and start infecting the race that lived there.

Little by little, under the misconception of giving out power, they took control of all the living beings in that world and then connected themselves to the central interdimensional system.

After connecting to the central system, worlds would enter a twisted game where if they wanted to live and gain more power, they had to eliminate the other race.

When a race was completely defeated, they would all turn into mindless NPCs controlled by the central system, used as toys to make the game more interesting.

In the middle of all this, the dragon race was the strongest of all the races out there, even without the system. After they entered the interdimensional games, they dominated all their opponents without much difficulty, and that was precisely the problem; there was no fun in watching a game in which you already knew the result.

So the system decided to go against its own rules and eliminate all the dragons. All of them except one so that they could put him in their zoo and look at him for amusement.

"I don't know how such a primitive system was able to connect to the central system, but if the connection completes at this stage of the game, you are truly and utterly f**ed.

And the connection becomes complete if you lose here…." Said Aslan.

Alex was frozen in place, not sure how to react or even how to breathe. He felt like when he first opened his eyes after reincarnating; his mind was completely empty.

"don't worry, I'm not going to kill you," said the dragon, snapping Alex out of his daze.

"wh-what do you mean? Don't you want your freedom back?" asked Alex.

"what do I need freedom for when I don't have anyone to return to?"

Aslan had been in prison inside that damn zoo for almost a century, and now, all he wanted was to get revenge.

The humiliation of being looked at like an animal without inelegance by other races wasn't something a dragon deserved.

The system, with all its intelligence and resources, had miscalculated something. It thought that what Aslan wanted the most was freedom, but it couldn't be more wrong in its calculations.

Aslan indeed wanted freedom, but only to end his own life. He couldn't even kill himself in that damn prison.

Before the system came into his world, he was full of life and expectation; he had achieved many things and still had much to achieve.

But now, what could he do? What goal did he have? What could make him happy?

Power? Fame? Freedom?

No, nothing could make him happy anymore. Nothing could fill the void of losing his family in his heart. Nothing could satisfy him anymore.

Or at least that was what he thought before. Now, there was something that could make him happy, something that could lessen the pain of losing his family, and something that could satisfy him.

He wanted revenge.

He wanted to mess the system so much that it couldn't ever invade another race.

He wanted to end the misery which was his life by one last strong roar.

"I will help you become stronger and take my revenge," Aslan said in a proud voice.

"Sorry, but how are you going to do that? Aren't you imprisoned by the central system?" asked Alex.

"I indeed am. But the system made the mistake of giving me temporary freedom," answered Aslan, and then continued in a proud voice, "have you ever heard of the term "dragon's apostle"?"
