"What do you think it means, Ayako?" Kai asked as they walked from the train station.
"That the people in the dream don't respond to you? Or the door closing itself?"
"Either. It's weird."
"To me, what's weirder is that you remember these dreams so clearly. I can't remember much of my dreams when I want to. There was one time, I was dreaming I was on the perfect date, but when I woke up, I couldn't even remember the guy's face or anything we talked about." Ayako pouted. "I might never live that in real life, and what I got was ruined. Then you have these weird ones from your Quirk that you always remember. Care to give me that ability?"
"… give me a couple months, I'll see what I can do. But you'd have to let Arachne put you through the genetic shuffle," Kai gave her a sidelong glance. "You know how that goes for me every month."
"Ugh, never mind. Not worth it. While we are on the subject, can you not refer to that as your 'time of the month?' It's weird."
"But I do it more or less every month, suffer, and bleed, so am I wrong?"
"You are correct, but that doesn't make you right."
"It's hilarious."
"Just to you, idiot!"
They both laughed. It was a discussion they had had before. An old joke that helped them to lighten the mood for a little while before dealing with serious stuff at school. They just wanted to dodge it for a moment longer.
The two turned the corner. Kai suddenly barred his arm across Ayako and pulled her back behind the wall.
"What is- oh. Wow. That's a lot of people. I can't sense anything they are holding or doing, so what is it? Protesters? Angry parents that want you gone? Lynch mob?"
"Worse. Professional fanboys and girls."
"If you said reporters, it would have been faster to say."
"But not as accurate. Look," Kai pointed. They could see their classmates being waylaid as the reporters swarmed them in attempts to get a solid quote about All Might as a teacher. Ayako could see their auras shift darker as they struggled to find an answer that didn't mention the incident that had happened yesterday. But despite the awkwardness and efforts to get through UA's gate, the reporters were relentless.
"Kai, you need to do something, they are still traumatized, and soon those reporters might pick up on that. I'm too young for my brother to be on TV as a criminal."
"I didn't let your parents adopt me for that exact reason, so you don't need to worry about that as long as you stop calling me that in public! But fine, I'll do something."
Kai touched the rock wall and summoned a changeling, which took the form of an average-looking man. Then he pulled his phone out of his pocket and went onto YouTube. Pretty soon, he found a clip that would be useful. He put the volume to the max and then put the phone in the outer pocket of his jacket.
"Alright, that should do it. Just follow my lead, and talk."
Ayako nodded and walked with him around the corner. As they approached the press, she launched into her usual topic- manga. She had always been a bit of a geek that way. Though Kai studied from the old stories, she kept trying to get him into the current stuff. Today's subject: the story of a girl raised as an assassin who broke free of her master in an attempt to learn what it meant to be truly human. Kai thought it was interesting, but also felt like she was looking at him funny. Like she was trying to say something about him.
Once they reached the press, Kai reached into his pocket and tapped his phone, getting it to play the clip. At the same time, the changeling behind Ayako transformed, becoming wider, taller, and more familiar.
"I am here," boomed All Might's voice. The reporters instantly snapped their heads around, ignoring the students that they had been pestering to see that All Might was right behind a pair of students that they hadn't seen before.
As their brains finished processing, the "All Might" before them turned around and ran as fast as possible. Meanwhile, Kai grabbed Ayako's arm and got her started running. As they raced for the gate, they grabbed Iida, then Uraraka, then Deku and pulled them along into a run. As long as they passed through, they would be free from the press' interrogation. UA had a barrier that prevented anyone without a pass from entering.
Just outside the gate, Ayako faltered for a moment. She sensed something strange, a person with a lack of emotion. Or perhaps, someone who was trying to not have them. There was a man with white hair who was just staring at UA. She couldn't see his face directly, but something was wrong with him judging by his aura.
"Ayako!"
Hearing Kai call, Ayako snapped out of her thoughts. Perhaps something was wrong with that man. But in any case, she didn't have the time or training to help. So she ran through the gate and off to class.
As she left the range where she could sense the strange man, a wide grin came across his scarred mouth.
Short chapter, but I felt like doing it anyways. I was rereading the manga, and realized that those interviews would become awkward with the context of Kai, so I wrote it up anyways. They would try to say nothing, but this could have become a worse thing.
F to pay respects for the poor changeling that took the form of All Might to draw off swarms of reporters. Kai will never forget its sacrifice.
