Chương 62: Back to Dreamland, or Whatever

That night.

Kai lay down his head on his futon and went to sleep. However, it seemed that once his mind relaxed, he went from sleep to that other world.

Even if his body was asleep, was it still a dream? Especially knowing that there was another very real presence that met him there?

His dream or whatever it was took him to the island he had last seen. It was almost a surprise- nothing had happened Sunday night. But today…

"I guess this really is part of my Quirk," he murmured.

Sunday had been wonderfully uneventful, so his Quirk had had almost no use at all. But today, he had pushed his limit by summoning all the zerglings he could to have the "obstacle course" for his classmates to run through. Just as he had suspected, using his Quirk made him more open to this… state.

Though that was one question answered, another rose- where was Kerrigan?

This was some kind of shared dream. Like Inception. But who the true dreamer was was unclear. From talking with Kerrigan before, it seemed that she had thought he was the one intruding on her dreams, while he thought the same about her. Hopefully, they were both the dreamers.

This being the dream of some other being was not a comfortable thought.

The fact that that wasn't impossible even less so. The world was already strange enough for it.

Still, even though Kerrigan being absent raised some questions, that wasn't all too bad. Kai felt that he had just been lucky to escape her before. Or rather to be let go. He had shown her that he wasn't an enemy, and she had shown that she wasn't malevolent. That wasn't enough to think of trusting her or feeling safe around her.

That would be the same as thinking a lion at the zoo had become harmless for being close enough to see, and he was now on the same side of the glass as her.

Therefore, Kai decided that he would just take a look around the island. Maybe he could learn something. And if he couldn't, then he would at least be staying away from her, and this dream could become just a dream again.

A lucid dream where you could peacefully spend time on a little island sounded like the perfect escape from reality he needed.

Kai took a deep breath and looked to the sky. The blue air above him was familiar, but also just barely different enough for him to tell it wasn't Earth. Maybe the atmosphere was thicker, or just a richer blue. Looking down towards the horizon, the line between sky and sea was just that much blurrier for it.

Turning around, Kai looked up to the mountains. Two peaks rose into the clouds. But further down, just a little way from where he currently stood, a metallic shine rose above the trees. The roof of some kind of building. Most likely where Kerrigan stayed when she was in this place in her reality. Also most likely the most dangerous place to go in this whole dreamscape.

With that in mind, Kai turned back around and started his hike down to the shore. He didn't need to look for answers about this mysterious goddess. All he needed was for her to leave him alone and not drive him insane.

He had other people to do that. And other issues without adding that.

But for now, it was time to hit the beach!

*****

At the top of one of those mountain peaks, Kerrigan was perplexed. She still didn't trust this boy who had suddenly disturbed her rest. She had been sleeping for longer than she wanted to think about, and suddenly he had entered her dreams so smoothly that she hadn't noticed his foreign presence until he had come directly into contact with her in her memories.

At first, she had thought that he was another xel'naga. After all, nothing in the universe (her universe) there was nothing that was supposed to be on that level of psionic strength. And that a benevolent xel'naga wouldn't have gotten involved in the war with Amon all those years ago was unthinkable.

Yet, watching from on high over the boy who was meandering down to the beach, taking close looks at everything in his path as if they were new and interesting things, she couldn't help but also deny that he was not an enemy. Once, she sent a psionic pulse out on a level that should only be detectable by something like her. Like a psychic x-ray.

But Kai didn't so much as flinch. He was either a terrifyingly perfect actor or just too weak to feel it. On the one hand, a potential enemy with an unknown goal. On the other, an innocent creature that still somehow intruded on her dreams.

Even if he had revealed the story of his world to her, it made little sense. Not that his Earth was a different Earth- having seen one, she was convinced of that point. And multiple universes was not unreasonable either- the stories of the original xel'naga said that they had seeded life through multiple universes in their Infinite Cycle.

What was truly unreasonable was these… Quirks, he had shown. Those were not psionic powers like she wielded, but something else. Something that only belonged in fantasy stories. Real superheroes? Don't be ridiculous.

The world he had painted for her was far from what she would expect from action movies, but it still held many of the same points. It was uncanny how similar it was to those stories. Even the old stories of his own world that he had remembered pointed out how ridiculous it was to have a world of superpowers.

If that could exist in reality, many rules were thrown out the window, and this boy could still be dangerous.

She decided that she would wait and watch.

And so it was that two people, one a goddess-like existence, and the other just a young man, each thought that the other was a threat.

Guess my memory isn't reliable on Mondays, so Tuesdays it is.

Thought I'd give a little explanation about Kerrigan here. She won't be summonable. Sorry.

As for why she is as she is, it is because Starcraft's observed timeline has set her like this. Kai being in the future, she has to be to some degree as well.

Suppose instead of Starcraft, Kai summoned Egyptian Gods. Not only would he have studied Yugioh, but the gods would be at whatever their observed timeline put them at. Since Apophis was only prophesized to do so, and never actually ate the sun, it would naturally not be after that, but anything the myths said happened would have to have happened in the past of the thing.

As for this awkward state where Kerrigan thinks Kai is an enemy, it's because having the goddess of another universe being on your side is still useful, even if you can't literally have her at your side. Kai needs to earn a bit of rapport with her before she starts being a fairy godmother.

One a lot more fun than Cinderella's.

Remember: when shopping for fairy godmothers, go to the dark side. Can you imagine what Sleeping Beauty would have been like if Maleficent had given her a gift because she was a welcomed guest?
