Chapter 17-Nightly antics
With Harry and Ruby; weapon workshop; Beacon Academy; Vale; 7:13 P.M.
"No, no, no! That doesn't go there! You'll mess up the firing mechanism!"
"But then where would the motor go then if not there?!"
"In the back! Right behind the chamber!"
"But wouldn't that still effect the firing mechanism?!"
"NO! Not when you put it right there!"
"Alright fine! Now how about the magazine and receiver?! Remember I'm basing this off a weapon that's a single shot, and we need to modify it to fit a magazine of at least fifteen to twenty shots!"
"I'm getting there! Shish!"
The duo of Ruby Rose and Harry Potter were arguing over the construction of his weapon. While Harry was no master engineer, he knew enough to put a damn mecha-shifting weapon together after meticulous cleaning and maintenance he would perform on his old weapon, Hunter's Moon. But Ruby, by her own admission, was a dork when weapons were concerned. Her knowledge of weapons exceeded Harry's, and she flaunted it.
Unintentionally, of course.
Currently, the two were glaring at each other. "Now look," Ruby said, pointing at the blueprint, "originally, the gun was loaded from the top, but with the mecha-shift, we're going to have to move it back a bit. Otherwise, you'll have to settle with a single loader." Harry nodded.
"And will this affect the damn motor or the current?" he asked. Ruby smirked at him.
"We'll have the bullets follow a diagonal pattern down to the chamber, passing through the current and giving the bullet a slight charge, reducing the charging time. But it disrupts the current and takes more energy to correct it. That's why I had you order a stronger motor. Take it, or leave it," she explained, crossing her arms. Harry sighed.
"I guess it will have to do. But it will miss the top rail right?" he asked.
"Yes. What? Do you think I'd intentionally sabotage a beauty such as this?!"
"Alright, Alright! I get it!" he laughed. He picked up a piece of metal the size of a pistol magazine. "Now we'll need a place for this. It's the power cell for Prongs' second function."
"Power cell? Second function?" Ruby frowned and rummaged through the blueprints. "I don't see anything in the plans about it."
"That's because they're not in the blueprints," Harry explained. "I didn't place it in the blueprints so in case anyone got ahold of them, they wouldn't know about this."
"Ok, but that's this 'second function?'" Ruby asked, making air quotes. Harry smirked and motioned her to come closer. Confused, she did as she was told, and Harry whispered something in her ear. Her eyes widened.
"That's impossible! The mecha-shift will not only be in the way, but it will disrupt the electromagnetic current!" she exclaimed, jumping away from him.
"And that's what this power cell is for," he said, still smirking as he held up the cell. "Of course, it will only be good for one shot, but it will be worth it if it works!"
Ruby frowned at him and did several calculations in her head. "Hm…" She went back to the blueprints and asked, "How powerful is that power cell?"
"Powerful enough that it can recharge your mom's Scroll even after it was dead for ten years," he told her. "It produces a slight electromagnetic field in order for the round to stay stationary while Prongs is in his secondary function. I keep it on me at all times to keep my Scroll charged, in case the Animagus corp. needs my assistance with something."
Her eyes traveled across the blueprints, narrowing in concentration. "Alright. So now that you've told me something that you should've mentioned earlier, we'll need to fix the problems with the mecha-shift that you've now caused…"
Training center, Beacon Academy, Vale; same time
Yang slammed her fists into the punching bag relentlessly. The past month had been rough for her. After her disastrous failure against Summer her first combat class, Yang threw herself into training, hoping to get strong enough to beat the woman. Yang was positive that she could beat her step mother if she trained hard enough.
So far, every time she challenged her she was met with utter defeat.
She yelled loudly, and slammed her fist back into the punching bag, almost knocking it off its chains. She breathed heavily as she grabbed the bag to stop it swinging and tried to steady her breathing.
"You know," a voice called from behind her, making Yang turn to see Summer leaning against a support beam until she stood and walked to Yang; "you could put more force into your punches if widen your stance slightly. That way, you can commit more momentum to your punch." She stopped in front of the blonde brawler. "Your stance is too tight, and widening it will decrease your chances of being knocked off your feet, if only slightly," she told her.
Yang tried to keep the scowl off her face. "Thanks," she muttered. "I'll keep that in mind." She let go of the punching bag and started punching it again, not heeding Summer's advice.
Summer sighed. "Yang," she said, but Yang didn't stop. "Please talk to me. It's been a month since I finally came back, and you've avoided me every chance you get. I'd…" She paused, trying to word her words carefully. "I'd very much like to talk with you…like we used to." Memories of Yang as a little girl played through Summer's mind, recalling the long, long conversations the two would have, whether it was Summer telling her a story, or Yang trying to tell her own. It was those times that Summer wanted back.
Yang gritted her teeth. She knew Summer just wanted to reconnect with her, but Yang wasn't ready yet. The wound still felt fresh in her mind. She shook her head. "I…I need time…" she said. "You coming back…What I know about…her…I just…I need a little more time. Please."
This displeased Summer as she frowned a little. "Yang…"
"Please," Yang repeated, stopping her punching. "Just go." Summer gained a distraught look on her face, and tried to place her hand on Yang's shoulder. However, she stopped short, and hesitantly withdrew her hand.
"V-Very well," Summer relented, uneasy. "I'll leave you be." She turned slowly and walked out the room. "I…I love you, Yang. Never forget that." Yang didn't acknowledge her. Summer's shoulders shagged. "Never forget that," she repeated more softly, and walked out the door, closing the door behind her.
Yang sighed dejectedly. "Love you, too," she whispered quietly went back to punching again, this time trying out Summer's advice and widening her stance slightly.
At the cliff edge
First year student Ragnar Cornel liked to look up at the moon. It calmed him. For whatever reason, staring up at the bright hunk of rock had a soothing effect on him. It also gave him a lot of quiet time to think about things.
The eighteen year old youth had tan skin, dark brown hair and eyes. Two kangaroo ears sat on the top of his head and a kangaroo tail swung from side below him, signifying him as a Faunus. He wore black shoes, a black muscle shirt and denim shorts.
A month had passed since he was accepted into Beacon Academy, and to be honest, he was enjoying his time at arguably the best school in Remnant. Not only that, but he was the leader of the soon to be greatest team to graduate Beacon; Team Rhythm (RHTM)! His partner Hunter was a boss in a fight and Tenn and Marion, the Lazu twins, were just badass!
It was made even better that the two people in the world he wanted to beat, Pyrrha Nikos and Harry Potter, were also attending Beacon! He remembered fighting Pyrrha in the Mistral regional tournament, and getting his ass handed to him by her. And then when he saw Harry fight her blow for blow, he was sure he wanted to fight him.
Ragnar smirked up to the broken celestial body. "Oh, yeah! This is going to be a great four years!" he said to the darkness around him as he placed his hands behind his head. He suddenly heard shouting coming from his right, making his kangaroo ears stand up. "Huh?" He looked to the sound. "Who could be out here of all places tonight?" He got up and jumped from tree to tree, seeking out the source of the noise.
He landed near the voices and saw Team JNPR in a sort of makeshift training grounds. He frowned in confusion as he watched the green clad on, Lie Ren he thought, tutoring the blonde, Arc something or other, in hand to hand combat.
"Tighten your stance, Jaune," Ren instructed. Ah, that was right. That was the blonde's name. "Fighting bare handed is not like having a sword and shield. You don't have those to protect you; you need to protect your vital areas as much as possible."
"Right. What next?" Jaune asked, tightening his stance as instructed.
"I want to see just how well your endurance is," Ren said. "Nora? Could you please come here a moment?"
"Hehehehe! Sure thing, Ren!" the orange haired girl, Nora, said cheerfully.
"Oh, God, spare me," Jaune groaned.
Ragnar chuckled lightly as he watched the blonde swordsman spar with the orange haired Nora, attempting to keep his stance correct and block or dodge her attacks. Pyrrha and Ren seemed to give off helpful bits of advice whenever Jaune was hit or missed a block. It made for good entertainment.
But that raised the question of why they made the training ground in the first place. Could they do that? Pulling out his Scroll, he searched through Beacon's student manual to find out. 'Huh. So we can make our own training ground as long as we abide by Beacon rules? Choice!' he thought as an idea hit him. He quickly made his way away from the team until he was a safe distance away. He pulled up Hunter's contact information and activated the video chat.
"Yo! Hunter! You still awake?!" Ragnar spoke.
He heard a groan and suddenly, the video chat opened and revealed a pale skinned teen with black spikey hair and green eyes wearing a spiked choker. "What do you want, Rag?" the huntsman in training asked in annoyance. "I'll have you know, some of us like to enjoy resting."
"Yeah, yeah, yeah! Whatever. Listen! I just had a super cool idea, and I need you and the twins to meet me at the edge of the woods at the cliff, got it?!" Ragnar spoke rapidly. Hunter raised an eyebrow.
"Um…why?" Hunter asked.
"Team meeting!"
Hunter groaned. "You call team meetings at the worst times!" he complained. "Ok, fine. Whatever. I'll wake the twins and we'll be there in a moment. Hey, Lazy twins! Get your asses up!"
"See y'all in a moment!" Ragnar said cheerfully, closing the feed, thinking about how he would not be outdone by Pyrrha's team.
In Team HAIL's dorm room
Lily, Isabella, and Adam were in there dorm, reading books from Harry's home dimension. They had asked to learn more about his home, so he had laid a few books out for them that morning for them while he and Ruby worked on his weapon.
Apparently, a lot of the stuff he had from his home was thanks to his owl Hedwig. She somehow knew Harry wasn't dead and tried to gather his effects for him and fly to him. His friends, Ron and Hermione, saw her doing this, and according to a letter they attached to Hedwig's leg, Hermione discovered something about a 'familiar bond' between Hedwig and Harry.
They then called all of Harry's friends together and they packed him a few books, magic items, and several potions and potion ingredients (because quote, "We know you'll end up getting yourself killed Harry, hence all the potions." unquote). They then charmed the trunk to be feather-light and shrunk it for Hedwig, who then somehow found her way into the Department of Mysteries and through the Veil, somehow not getting killed. Harry still couldn't figure out how she did it.
Lily grinned from over her copy of a book called "Standard book of Spells, Year 1". "Anything interesting for you guys?" she asked.
"A lot, really," Isabella commented, her nose still stuck in an Arithmancy book. "Wizards are a lot more scientific than I would have thought."
"And they're incredibly sadistic," Adam said, reading "Quidditch Through the Ages". "I'm reading about their sport of choice, and while I'd very much like to try it, I've got to say they loved torturing their players. The only way to end a game is to find this little flying gold ball called 'A Snitch.' One game went on for three months because they couldn't find it. Though, that was before they actually used a Snitch. Before they used a little round golden bird called a Snidget."
"Damn. Talk about impossible to win games," Lily piped up. "And animal cruelty."
Isabella put the Arithmancy book down, and picked up a book on Potions. "Wizards are odd," she summarized.
"Crazy's more like it," Lily muttered as she went back to her book. She found the subjects intriguing, especially Transfiguration. It…Well, the theories made sense to her.
Adam grunted. "Amen."
With Weiss and Blake
"Have you noticed that Yang's becoming more and more agitated lately?" Weiss asked, as she reviewed her notes from the day. Blake looked up from her novel and raised an eyebrow.
"Now that you mention it, I have," she admitted, putting her book down. "I think it has something to do with Professor Rose." Weiss nodded in agreement.
"Ever since she was rescued, Yang's been rather…irritable," Weiss continued. "Which I find rather confusing. Ruby hasn't shut up about her since their mother came back into their lives." It was actually sweet that Ruby loved her mother so much, but having to hear about it day in and day out was tiring.
Blake frowned thoughtfully as she reviewed all the facts she knew and her memories of every time Yang and Summer were in the room. She grimaced when a caught a recurring theme. "I recall Yang being really tense when Summer's in the room," she said. "Did something happen between them before Summer got trapped in the Death Eater tunnels?" Weiss shook her head.
"Not that I'm aware of," she answered. "And if Ruby knows, she was either too young to remember or doesn't think it would cause this problem." Weiss stood from her bed and began pacing. Blake looked at her.
"Why is this bugging you all of a sudden?" she asked.
"Because it's affecting our dynamic as a team," she responded, still pacing. "If there's one thing Harry's drilled into my head, its-EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!" Blake's eyes widened in shock as Weiss was yanked out of their window by a rope around her ankle while a flagpole seemingly extended out a good five feet from their window. A water balloon strapped to the tip of the pole was released as Weiss reached it, and Weiss's snow white panties and the underside of her combat skirt were drenched in bright pink paint.
Blake ran to the window. "WEISS! Are you ok?!" she asked frantically.
"Y-Yeah! Yeah! Totally fine!" she yelled back, her cheeks turning atomic pink. "Just caught in a prank by Harry!" She looked up at the paint dripping off the edge of her combat skirt and coating her panties. "Dammit…this is soooo humiliating!" She crossed her arms across her chest and tried to look dignified. "But it was worth it! I got a prank on Harry. That was worth the embarrassment! Yep! Totally worth it!" Blake looked shocked at the elaborateness of the prank. But one thing bugged her…
"When did he put an extendable flagpole above our window?" she wondered aloud.
Teacher dorms; Summer and Taiyang's room
"What's wrong, Summer?" Taiyang asked his wife when she came walking into their room, a look of sorrow on her face. Summer sighed in misery and fell down face first on the bed.
"Yang," came her muffled reply. "She's still avoiding me, and doesn't even want to be in my presence. It hurts, Tai. My Little Sun Dragon hates me! She really, utterly hates me!" Taiyang sighed at his wife's overdramatic attitude.
"Yang doesn't hate you, Sum," he said, sitting next to her on the bed and placing a hand on her back.
"The glares she sends me when she thinks I'm not looking say otherwise," she pouted. Taiyang shook his head.
"Summer, I know Yang. And short of you shaving her head bald, she's not going to hate you," he said again. "I think…" He paused for a moment to sigh. "I think finding out you weren't her real mom has something to do with it."
"I still need to punish you for your shutting down fit when you should have been taking care of my daughters!" she growled, making Taiyang shudder.
"I know, I know," he mumbled in dread. "What I'm trying to say Sum is: give her time." Summer looked up at him finally. "Yang truly did miss you, Summer. But you know how teenagers are. She's almost a spitting image of you at that age." Summer glared cutely at Taiyang, making him chuckle. Suddenly, he lashed out and wrapped her in a hug. She let out small noise of embarrassment as they fell back on the bed.
"Yang will come around, Summer," he said in a placating manner. "Don't rush her. Remember, she's Raven's daughter. And I'm pretty sure Raven's stubbornness is genetic," he joked. Summer squirmed in his arms, making him tighten her hold on her, making her blush.
"You're an idiot," she whispered. He smiled.
"An idiot you married," he countered. She looked up at him and smirked.
"Yes," she admitted. "You did have a certain…charm…about you," she teased.
"Xiao Long curse I'm afraid," he said with a laugh. Summer laughed too.
With Ozpin
Ozpin sipped his coffee as he stared at the various security footages on his desk Holo-system. He chuckled lightly as he zeroed in on two images: Ruby and Harry arguing in the workshop, and Jaune training with his team. He smiled. It was nice that Jaune had his team's full backing now.
"H-Hold still, Weiss! I'm on my way!" a voice called out and Ozpin turned to the feed.
"Hurry up, then! If Harry sees you helping me, you'll be on his prank list! And as you can see, it's not a good idea to be on it!" Weiss said, hanging upside down from a flagpole while Blake walked agilely across it.
He raised an eyebrow. "When did Mr. Potter attach an extendable flagpole above Team RWBY's window?"
