Chương 1220: 14

You know how I was a little miffed about how my plans for the day got ruined? What with the storm happening and all?

Yeah, I've gotten over it.

I still can't really believe it. One of the least likely events just occurred for me. Even though it was captured on a lie, and I wasn't the one that actually caught it at the end of the day, I was now the owner and trainer of a Pokémon possessing the King gene.

It's almost as if some strange circumstance has allowed me to capture rare Pokémon after rare Pokémon. As if the being that brought me to this world deemed it so…

Hrm…

Eh, whatever. I don't care, to be honest. I've got a King!

The amount of affection I feel for this Joy right now is beyond anything I've felt for somebody before. No joke, if I were my proper age I would ignore those muscles in a heartbeat and do whatever she wanted as compensation.

Whatever she wanted.

However, I was not my proper age. I was ten. And so, I instead decided to spend the rest of my day with her, keeping her company and learning what little I could on the arts of healing.

We ended up trekking through the whole of the island, amounting to probably five miles total of walking back and forth. As she mentioned at our initial meeting, this island was home to a group of Mankey. A very curious, if aggressive, Pokémon, they were being especially mellow towards us, even allowing affection in the form of scratches to occur. This, normally speaking, is quite rare, seeing as how most Mankey would just kick my shit in if I tried to do that. But they knew Joy, trusted Joy, and seeing as how I had no interest in them beyond being Joy's helper for the day, I was summarily trusted in turn.

The only hiccup came in the for of their evolved form: Primeape.

There were three Primeapes in total on the island. One was the alpha and the other two were her mates. Yes, the alpha was female. She was probably inspired by Joy's physique and chose to emulate.

These Primeapes were as chill as the Mankeys were, honestly. One of the males even let me brush him. It wasn't my interactions with the Primeapes that was the issue, nor was it their attitude.

It was that they thought Baelish was a fruit.

Seriously. Baelish had been experimenting with his newly learned abilities, Teleporting all around the island, faceplanting into almost everything in the process of this. His actions natural caught the attention of the island denizens, and due to his small size and circular shape, Baelish was viewed as a source of food.

Normally speaking, I would have just returned Baelish, damn the consequences. This was an actual issue and Joy wasn't certain if he could keep away for long enough.

But I didn't. Instead, I released Thoros and had him keep watch.

In his bid to escape the Primeape trio, Baelish was not only using Teleport, he was also using Flash and Confuse Ray to keep them off his tail. A Flash right in the face for when they got too close and Confuse Ray for when they got too smart.

True, the thought of him being eaten ripped away at me and kept me on my toes, but I had didn't stop this.

This was training.

And what kind of trainer would I be if I didn't take advantage of said training?

.

We left at a little after 4:00pm, after a hearty meal of protein bars and nutrition supplements that tasted like asparagus with the texture of wet cardboard.

Apparently, that was all Joy ate.

Two hours later, Winter landed on the shores of Navel Island, home to my first Gym challenge.

There was no way I was going to challenge it right now, mind you. It was past 6:00pm at this point, which not only meant that the Gym was freezing cold, being based on the top of a mountain, but also that I would have to do the challenge at night. If memory served, that meant I would be sledding down a cliff with no lights on.

I'm not about that life.

So, we instead made way to the town based on Navel Island, cleverly named Navel Town. The Pokémon Center was our destination (where else?), and I made the simple decision of challenging Danny later on.

The next day, bright and early in the morning, I made way towards the forested area surrounding Navel Islands mountain. There, I released Thoros, Umber and Valyrian, Baelish still outside of his ball as was the new norm.

"So!" I started, quickly grabbing their attention. "Thoros, Valyrian – you two have been given new attacks. Remember when I told you about TM's a while back? Yeah, those. Thoros, you were given Ice Fang, and Valyrian, you were given Iron Defense. I want you both to try and figure out these new moves while Baelish and I do our own training. Umber, I'd like for you to work with Thoros. Help him out as much as you can. Valyrian, I don't think you'll need any help."

They looked suitably surprised by this information dump. Thoros was quick to become interested, his fangs already lightening with energy. It looked like Umber might not need to help as much as I envisioned. Valyrian grumbled, closing her eyes and tucking her head beneath her wing, pretending as if I didn't exist.

…Well, damn.

Valyrian'll listen to me in battle, and generally speaking will do as I ask in most circumstances, but there are still times when her stubbornness rears its ugly head. I can't beat it out of her, not now that she's been with me for all of these months; she'd catch on quick and dig her heels in even more if I tried that. Instead, I've just got to wait it out. Eventually, once she realizes she's being ignored, she'll come out of her funk.

Hopefully.

While she settled down for a nap and Thoros and Umber started working, Baelish and I made our way a little farther out, still in the clearing we'd commandeered but decently out of their hair.

He hopped onto the branch of a lower hanging tree, making it so that we could speak to one another face to face. Much better than talking to the top of my head.

"You wish to train," he began, still smarting over the Primeape thing.

Maybe I shouldn't have pushed his buttons so early. It hasn't even been two full days since I caught him. Our relationship hasn't been established enough for me to mess with him like I do my other Pokémon.

Still can't believe the luck I've had with Pokémon in these last two days.

Hopefully karma doesn't bite me in the ass to balance things out.

…Wait a sec, does karma even exist here? Is that a mindset people hold? Is it even called karma?

"Well?" He questioned, returning my mind to the situation at hand. He sounded as annoyed as he could, squeaky voice turning the smallest decibels deeper.

Which was still squeaky as shit.

"Right!" I announced. "I want to work on Teleport some more."

"I can already use it decently," Baelish countered, suddenly appearing on another tree. Then another, and another after that, returning to his original branch after a minute of showing off.

Involuntarily, I raised an eyebrow at his quiet panting.

"You became exhausted just from that, which means you need to work on it even more." I said, shaking my head. "And that's not even what I want to work on. The more you use Teleport, the easier and less strenuous it'll become. But Teleport can be used with more than just yourself. I want to work on Teleporting with others."

Baelish narrowed his eyes in contemplation, mumbling. "…to do that would require expending energy all around the… | …need to think about weight and size… | …what about density…"

As he kept mumbling, hopping around anxiously, lost in his own little world, the makings of an idea began to formulate from within my cranium.

"Seeing as how I can't fly," as I showcased with my lack of feathers. Baelish snorted. "And how this is training, you'll be working with a partner, just as Thoros is."

He went cross eyed. "You would saddle me with the maniacs? The younglings?"

Maniacs. That's what he referred to Winter and Drogon as. Just because they liked to battle and just because they went out of their way to start shit did not mean they were-

Hold up.

…Yeah, actually I take it back. Baelish is pretty good with his names.

"No, I'm not setting you up with any of them," was my response, still coming to terms with his overly accurate observations.

"The fish?"

Magikarp? No, but that was a reminder. Joy said she'd known that Magikarp since she was seven, and she was twenty-four. There's no way a Magikarp that's seventeen years old isn't close to evolving. It's probably holding back its evolution, waiting for the right time?

Or it could be a King thing. I dunno.

Shaking my head, I instead grabbed him by the scalp, lifted him up, legs flailing in surprise at the action, and twisted him around so that he faced his partner.

Though annoyed at my handling of his person, Baelish didn't speak further. He knew what I wanted and at least this was a partner he was willing to work with. He teleported away.

Valyrian's screech of surprise at appearing at the other end of the clearing was almost cathartic.

.

Five days. It took five days for Baelish to get Teleport down enough for me to risk him bringing me places. My Pokémon had stronger, sturdier bodies than I did, so it was only natural that they be the ones Baelish tested his mettle on.

Really glad I did that. He didn't know what he was doing for the first few days, accidentally teleporting them in uncomfortable positions, sometimes in the middle of the air, where they were perfectly safe, and sometimes in the water along Navel Islands beaches, where they were spitting mad.

Worth it though. Baelish could now use Teleport with a maximum of three others at a time. His range needed work, in that he could only bring passengers to destinations within his line of sight, but that was soon to change. The next step of Teleport was to have Baelish bring me places from memory, and then the step after that was for him to take me long distances.

We weren't there yet, certainly not yet, but it was going to happen, and based on the love Baelish has found for his newfound ability, I'd bet on it happening sooner rather than later.

Valyrian, after decided she didn't like being his test dummy, ended up properly practicing Iron Defense in a failed attempt at escaping Baelish's newest obsession. Being a Steel type and knowing many moves of her natural typing already, it was a cinch for her to figure it out. And, since she figured it out quickly, she had even less reason to keep away from the Natu.

Which worked well for me.

Thoros still hadn't gotten Ice Fang down yet, however. He could bring energy to his fangs and use it effectively, but it wasn't Ice Fang. Somehow, in the process of trying to learn his newfound attack, he learned an entirely different one: Crunch.

Not much else had happened in our time before challenging Danny. My other Pokémon got to stretch their legs, keeping up with us and staying aware of their environment, but that was really it.

Oh. Actually, no. There was one more thing.

Viserion was no longer with us. Being smaller than average and physically weaker than Rhaegal and Drogon, her depression was beginning to make a comeback. Not liking that and unsure on how to deal with it, I went back to her roots.

Namely, Professor Oak.

My deal with the man had never been forgotten. For trading him Viserion's mother, I was not only given Viserion's egg and a carry limit increase but was also allowed tutelage in the form of his Dragonite for any Dragon type Pokémon I have, as well as Pokémon with Dragon type characteristics.

I'm not fool enough to believe that Dragonite is going to give them his full attention. Even still, a pointer here and there from an Elite level Pokémon is worth it.

So, hoping to alleviate my Dratini's worry, I had him sent to Professor Oak in exchange for Magikarp.

I've not heard much back from the scholar, taking that to be a good thing. Professor Oak seemed the type to only call if there was bad news. That there was no call told me that Viserion was settling in well at his ranch.

Rhaegal turned fussy though. Viserion was her brother and she liked to be around him. It took a fair bit of babying to get her to calm down.

Magikarp was accepted by my team as well as could be expected. By his size alone, most of my Pokémon assumed that he was strong, Winter and Drogon itching to test their stuff against him. Even if Drogon was still an egg, Winter remembered well the power of a King, and never shied away from telling my Charmeleon all about it. They were excited, to say the least

And then, being a Magikarp and still having suicidal tendencies, he greeted them in the only way he knew how. He flopped onto the beach, suddenly realizing he couldn't breathe oxygen through his gills very well, and flailed about on the sand.

Thus, my team realized he was a work in progress. The disappointment of the Maniacs was painfully obvious to see.

Everybody's gotta start somewhere boys.

Interestingly, Baelish and Magikarp got along quite well. Or did they use one another? Hard to tell. Magikarp, on average, would flop onto the beach at least once every thirty minutes when out of his Luxury Ball, and Baelish would Teleport him back into the water, trying to better his skill against the heavy bulk of the fish.

I don't really know how to quantify their relationship just yet. I'm still figuring it out.

But enough about that!

It was time.

My Pokémon were in their balls, everybody sans Baelish. Unlike his normal routine, he was not perched atop my head, using my hair as a nest. This time, he was snuggled inside of my arms, staring at the long, windy path that led trainers towards the Navel Island Gym.

"Why do you not just have the large avian bring you to this place?" He asked, looking at the road with slightest bit of trepidation, voice rising in pitch.

"Would if I could," I said, hiking my thumb to our left. "But I can't."

To the left of us was a white wood sign, red words boldly stating its message.

This is the test of Worthiness. It began. The Gym is atop this path, and to challenge the leader, one must rise to his own level. Hard work and dedication are needed to be a trainer, and so, this is not a test for your Pokémon, but for you. Climb this mountain. You may not ride a Pokémon up its slopes, nor can you fly. Do none of these, and your challenge shall be accepted.

Ahh, Danny. What a little pleb.

I've mentioned once before why the Orange League is different from normal League tournaments, but not really gone into details. The Orange League doesn't go for the normal Gym route, where the Gym in question'll focus on one Pokémon type. Instead, the Orange League likes to offer challenges to trainers, sometimes involving battling, sometimes not.

Each Gym had different goals in mind. Luana, up in Kumquat, focused on Teamwork. Cissy believed Speed and Accuracy were most important. Robyn held the firm thought that one cannot prepare for everything, and so Randomness was her area of expertise.

Danny's was adrenaline.

And what better way to get the heart pumping than to hike a couple miles up a narrow mountain path?

But this was circumventable. Easily, in my case. The message board said I can't ride a Pokémon and that I can't fly. It says nothing else.

Baelish can't carry me.

I can carry him though.

.

"Well…" Danny drawled, looking me over with an exaggerated air. "I guess I need to make some additions to the board."

Danny, while not being happy, was a decent sport at the very least. True, I didn't break any rules, but I broke the spirit of his competition. Which is a no-no in this wanna-be-Saiyan's books.

I couldn't even dredge up any shame. Through Baelish I turned what was likely to be a dangerous, tiresome hour-long trek into a three-minute cruise.

Sensing I wasn't going to respond to his bait, he just sighed. Kinda looked like a kicked puppy.

Stepping out from the Gym, he led me to the back, a handful of Poké Balls held on his jacket.

"Now, this challenge comes in three parts." He began. "The person who wins two out of three is the victor. If you lose, you will go back to the bottom and walk the trail like anybody else would need to do before I'll give you a rematch. If you win, you will be given the Sea Ruby Badge."

"Can't wait." And really, I couldn't. I was bouncing in my shoes, Baelish pecking at me to make me stop.

Couldn't help it though. I was excited.

"Are you aware of the requirements for my gym?"

I nodded. "At least three Pokémon. One of them knowing an Ice type move."

He returned my nod, his movements rough and jerky. "Good. We'll begin immediately."

I think he's mad at me.

We made our way to the back of the Gym, where holes with steam coming out of them decorated the rocky terrain. Geysers of boiling water shot up at random intervals, making me glad I spent money on a water proof jacket. 30 well spent, especially when mountain peaks are so cold.

Tropic or not, it's still Winter. Not my Pidgeot, I'm talking about the season.

"As you can see," Danny began, motioning towards the steaming pillars of water. "The Gym was built next to geysers."

"No, really?"

He shot me a look, silently willing me to shut my face.

Why do I have to have a big mouth?

Danny approached two geyser holes that were perpendicular to one another, sat near the edge of the mountain. "These two geysers are unique. They're linked somehow, water always coming up together, never separately. Which makes it the perfect place to have our first challenge!"

He grabbed a Poké Ball attached to the chest region of his jacket and tossed it into the air. From it, silver light took shape, a Nidoqueen appearing, looking more docile than expected.

Nidoqueen saw me and Danny and saw where we stood and seemed to play a rehearsed role. She opened her mouth, a sphere of teal hovering above her tongue, and shot an Ice Beam on one of the geysers going off closer to the gym. It froze from the top, the beam turning water to ice slowly but surely. When she was finished, a pillar of ice stood where once a rush of water escaped.

"That's the goal," Danny announced. "When these geysers shoot their water is when we'll start. Go ahead and release your Pokémon. I'll be using my Nidoqueen over here."

I nodded, not bothering to voice how absolutely silly this competition was, and released Umber. She cawed out her species, flinching ever so slightly at the heat the geysers gave out. Then she noted that there were no dragon babies to smother. She turned to me, awaiting directions.

Damn does she do me proud.

I explained the situation as best I could, taking note of her bewildered facial tick. Trust me girl, I'm as weirded out as you are.

But she was ready, and so was I.

Umber took her place next to my geyser, Nidoqueen at Danny's. All that was left was a waiting game.

Time ticked by, a whole lot of nothing happening. Minutes passed, with heavy geyser water trying to distract my penguin. Luckily, this did not occur.

Then it happened. There was no warning, no rumble in the ground. One moment, nothing. The next, water.

Umber and Nidoqueen both fired Ice Beams at their respective geysers. Nidoqueen had more experience with the motion, but Umber was a natural Ice type and a quick study besides.

I've always found that to be one of the cleverer things the Pokémon franchise did. Pokémon attacks that matched the attacking Pokémon's typing would be stronger than a non-matching attack from an opponent. Nidoqueen, being a Ground type, would struggle hard to compete with Umber, an Ice type, in this specific circumstance.

But that just went to show that Danny was a good trainer and worthy of being a Gym Leader. Even with the type difference, Nidoqueen and Umber were neck and neck. Though Umber won in the end, it was with a lead of less than second.

Umber looked quite smug at her victory. In comparison, Nidoqueen went from docile to hostile in a hot minute, rage evident in her movements. She approached Umber, arm beginning to light up in energy, when Danny returned her.

He looked at her Poké Ball, then looked at me. The disdain and annoyance he had shown from before was gone.

Now, he just looked embarrassed.

"Sorry about that," he coughed. "She's pregnant right now and gets more emotional than normal. That includes being mad."

Umbers smug look was quick to be replaced with a state of being enviously morose. Even with Rhaegal and Viserion, she still wanted to get preggers. Even if she beat Nidoqueen, she lost in the area she felt was more important.

Just- great.

"Anyways, let's move on." Danny said, clearing his throat. "You've won the first challenge. Congratulations. The second challenge is one of preparation. Basically, turn you pillar into a sled. Anything'll work really, but it has to be able to hold you and three Pokémon without breaking. Three Pokémon can help you make the sled, and they don't have to be the ones that ride in it."

Naturally speaking, the Pokémon that'll be in my sled will be of the smaller variety.

Danny released a trio Pokémon, a Machoke, a Geodude, and his Scyther. Machoke and Geodude took position in front of Danny's pillar, the humanoid Pokémon holding it from the ground whilst the Rock type floated upwards and help it from the top. Scyther took position in front of them, ready to carve into the ice.

I, ah. I hadn't really though this part through. Who to pick, who to pick… I didn't really have any Pokémon that were good for heavy lifting, the closest being Drogon. But Drogon wasn't right for this.

I almost wish I hadn't traded Arakh.

Almost.

But that reminder actually helped me out. I released Valyrian and Thoros next to Umber. The pair looked around curiously, taking in the trio to their side, and looked to me.

"I need you to use your Steel attacks on that pillar of ice." I said to the pair. "Try to turn it into a sled. If you mess up, Umber is going to make more ice to fix it."

Thoros and Umber nodded seriously. Valyrian glared, still not happy with the way the training session from this past week went and tucked her head underneath her wing.

Why. Why are you such a bitch?

I returned her then and there and sent out Winter in her stead. He was fine with doing what I said.

When my team looked ready, I gave Danny a nod. He nodded back and began a count down.

On his whistle, our Pokémon began their cutting.

And then I realized how outclassed at this challenge I really was.

His team was meticulous. Scyther carved into the ice like nobodies' business and Machoke and Geodude would scrape the areas Scyther had just dealt with.

In comparison, my team was performing slowly. Winter was using Steel Wing as methodically as he could, tongue poking out of his beak in concentration. Umber, realizing she didn't need to freeze anything just yet, walked right up to the pillar and pecked at it like crazy.

That was fine. If they continued with that pace, things probably would have gone smoothly. Another close victory, but I would have had the ability.

Thoros, however, didn't seem to know what to do. So, Metal Claw in hand, he just smashed.

The rest of us were mightily annoyed.

In the end, we were able to make an acceptable bobsled, though we lost by an obnoxious margin. Nearly ten minutes.

Danny wasn't even look smug. He just waited patiently, sat on a stool made from one of Thoros's mistakes.

"Now that you've finished," he began, tapping his watch. "We can start the last round. The third challenge is a race to the bottom of the mountain using the sleds that were just made. You have to use three Pokémon, but they can aid you in any way you think works. You can even attack me if you want, but if you do, I'll do the same."

His Machoke had pushed our sleds towards the edge of the mountain, where a path of lined snow that had markers on its sides was available to view. It was still steep as all could be.

Danny piled into his sled, returning his Scyther and releasing an Electrode. His Pokémon piled into the sled, Geodude and Danny taking the helm while Machoke and Electrode took the rear.

Weight distribution. Right.

Hm. The heaviest Pokémon on my team is Magikarp, but I'm not risking him. Definitely not now. Valyrian is next in line, but there's no way in hell she'd help me out with this.

Guess I've got to go with my number three.

Returning Thoros and Winter, I withdrew Rhaegal. Before she could slam me into the ground with one of her patented hugs, I bent down and gave her one of my own. She returned it happily.

She's about a hundred pounds at this point, just a little under. Being that she's barely over two feet tall, Rhaegal is perfect for being used as extra weight.

Umber, still huffing over Nidoqueen, waddled over to Rhaegal and started to smother the dragon. Not that Rhaegal seemed to mind.

I huddled them together, turning away from Danny and speaking quietly so as to remain unheard.

"Here's the plan. Umber, Rhaegal, Baelish. You three are gonna ride in that sled with me. Umber, you'll be up front, shooting Ice Beam at the ground so we can go faster. Rhaegal, you'll be in the middle. I'll be right behind you, holding you down. Baelish, stay in my jacket. If we get a chance, I want you to use Confuse Ray on that Electrode."

They all nodded, Umber even going so far as to salute me. Rhaegal tried to mimic her, but her stubby arms just made her mad. We piled into the bobsled, trying to get comfortable. Baelish was already in place and looked more than willing to go along with my plan.

Electrode and their pre-evolved form Voltorb have a highly unstable chemical compound within their bodies that reacts to their moods. Normally speaking, anger is the key component, but if they can't understand what's going on it can occur as well. If Confuse Ray works, it might use Explosion, guaranteeing me the win.

Did I care that my plan basically involved being a terrorist?

Actually, yeah. I did. There are connotations even I don't want to cross.

But it's all I can really think of.

"We're ready Danny!"

He nodded, releasing his Scyther once more. The Bug type took position behind us, hovering mid-air. Then, a gust of wind shot out from its sickles, knocking both sleds down the track.

We fell and fell, Umber doing her job magnificently. With her adding ice to the snow, we were steadily gaining ground, already past the competition. Danny was actually cheering us on, hooting and hollering at our strategy. It would have been a perfect victory, had my mind not started to wander into dangerous territory.

No matter how dangerous the situation I've been in was, I've been careful. Either on land or on Winter, I knew that I would be safe. I trusted what I sat upon.

I do not trust this. Fear grew in me, fear the likes of which I've only felt once before. The faster and faster we went, the worse it got. What if the sled broke? What If we hit a tree? What if we hit a bump and I was thrown? What if what if what if what if what if-

"Ohhhhh," I moaned, bile starting to form. I'm gonna hurl. I'm actually about to throw up.

No. Fuck this. I proudly hold my bitch card up for the world to see.

It's one thing to fly, it's another thing entirely to basically freefall off a mountain on a hunk of ice.

Screw the rules.

"BAELISH!"

"Here's the Sea Ruby Badge." Danny ground out, shoving the thing into my hand. We were at the bottom of the mountain, where Baelish used Teleport to bring the three of us along with the sled, surprisingly. "Kindly never return to my mountain again. I have rules to rewrite."

With that, he stomped off.

Ever ruin an adrenaline junkies rush?

I have. It's pretty funny. Scary, but funny.

It's a good thing I'm ten. If I were his age, there's no question in my mind that he'd be mad enough to start a fight.

And he didn't say that we couldn't do this. All things considered, I would have had Winter just fly me down were it not for the weight requirements put into place. He really did need to specify his rules.

So, I made an enemy. What do I care? This'll probably the last time I ever come to Navel Island.

Danny's mad that he has to be clearer with his own rules?

Yeah, not my problem.

Regardless, I've got my badge. That means one thing.

Time to go after the next one.

On to Trovita Island!
