Chương 16: Court Case 2

Leo returned his attention to the man seated on the stand and a cruel smile bloomed on his face as he took a step forward.

At this point even Mr Lance couldn't help but feel anxious. Everything was going well for him but for some reason, he felt things were going too well.

"Mr Lance, can you explain how the investigation was carried out?" Leo asked with a raised eyebrow as Lance frowned deeply but still proceeded to answer.

"Lance Inc. is dedicated to providing the best service to its staff. We put together an investigation team which meticulously went through the glaring facts and determined Mr Brent is the one behind the theft." Mr Lance said in an amicable tone leaving James frowning, but Leo didn't seem to care.

Leo's eyes remained calm as he wore indifference in his eyes but a cruel smile on his lips.

"What time did the crime take place according to the investigation?" Leo asked with a raised eyebrow.

"11:45 pm." Lance answered without a second thought and a firm look on his face. But the next question drained all the colors from his face.

"I wish to know if Mr Lance has any personal vendetta against Mr Brent?" Leo asked with cruelty blazing in his eyes.

Lance felt like time paused and only he and Leo remained. He finally recalled the previous question as well as his answer to it and felt something was wrong. He could see everything around him crumbling, and the only way out was forward. But the main problem now was that he knew this was a trap. An unavoidable one he had stepped in to.

I win!

That was all Lance could see in Leo's eyes and at this moment he realized he was dealing with someone worse than the devil.

"I would never bear ill intentions towards my employee!" Lance instantly replied but at that moment he realized he made the worst mistake of his life. He had blundered, but he had no option than to do so.

Checkmate.

Leo's grin widened to a sadistic level which he felt oddly terrifying.

"If that is the case then can you explain why Mr Brent was wrongfully discharged by you for a crime he clearly did not commit?" Leo sneered with disdain blazing in his eyes like fire.

"What do you mean?" Lance asked, but his face was pale as the feeling of all this being a trap became stronger.

The certainty and calmness in Leo's voice shattered the mental fortitude Lance had built up earlier, leaving him confused and dazed.

"Objection my lord!"

Herbert slammed his table and took to his feet, intent on putting an end to the questioning as he could see his client losing his cool. However, Leo seemed to ignore him. Even the judge just sent a glance at Herbert before overruling the objection.

"If you claim to hold no malicious intentions for Mr Brent, then can you explain why you will blame him for a crime he wasn't even present to commit?" Leo said with fierce eyes.

Buzz.

The temperature in the room dropped as Lance felt like he had made a terrible mistake but he didn't know what exactly he did wrong. The other two workers had said that James went home, but if James' alibi were his family, it would be difficult to prove him innocent hence why Lance never bothered about that.

"My Lord, I have evidence to prove that Mr Brent was not present at the hour of the crime. I wish to present the evidence procured and an alibi for Mr Brent."

Leo's words came like a bombshell, leaving Lance drenched in sweat. His mind began racing as he tried to understand what must have gone wrong for this to spiral out of his control.

He looked over to his lawyer only to see Mr. Herbert as pale as a sheet of paper. Leo would not mention evidence if he had nothing.

"Carry on." The judge approved with an approving smile.

It seemed she was equally pleased when she realized the pretty boy was not all show with no substance.

The bartender of the bar James drank at was brought in as an alibi while Leo proceeded to present the procured evidence. It was the audio recording of the other staff members in the bar testifying to seeing James at the bar that day and at that time as well as security footage from the bar.

The third piece of evidence presented that hit the last nail in the coffin, was a receipt of James' purchase that night. Seeing this Lance collapsed on his chair with a pale face.

The judge went through the evidence with an intrigued look on her face. Anyone could see that this case as pretty much over t this point.

"How can you say an investigation was carried out, and it wasn't even taken into account that Mr Brent was absent unless an investigation never occurred." Leo said coldly and Lance shivered.

"How can you claim you don't have any personal vendetta against my client when you didn't even give him a chance to defend himself and discharged him three days after the case was reported? Or is it safe to believe that you really had no personal vendetta against Mr Brent, and it simply had something to do with his color?" Leo added the last part with a raised eyebrow!

Clank!

Mr. Lance had to adjust his sitting posture after hearing this. He lowered his face drenched in sweat and didn't dare respond.

"Tell us, Mr Lance. What explanation do you have for these?" Leo dramatically threw his hands open, pointing to the screen displaying the video evidence while he asked the question.

The judge nodded at his performance before shifting her attention to Lance. Since the young lad had done his job, it was time for her to do hers.

"Tell us, Mr Lance" The judge added and gave Lance a stern look, breaking whatever final form of mental fortitude he had put up.

Lance, who was covered in sweat, had his eyes dart around from time to time. He shot a desperate glance at Herbert in hopes of getting rescued but even Herbert wouldn't look him in the face. At that moment he knew he was all alone.

"It's true we never carried out any investigation...." Mr Lance said his eyes shut tight and his hands interlocked. His face remained lowered and red in embarrassment as he continued.

"We didn't have time to gather our facts right. We had no other choice because it was ruining the company from within. If we had let it linger on for too long, it would have done far more damage, so we had to pin it all on a person. We decided to pick James because he was meant to be there. You need to understand from the perspective of a leader. I did this to protect my company." Mr Lance said with desperation in his eyes, but Leo didn't seem to care.

His eyes were full of indifference as he watched the man rant on. His gaze was pinned on the notifications popping up before his eyes. The court had become rowdy, and even the tough James was overwhelmed by emotions.

Leo didn't care about these people or what was happening around him. A satisfied smile spread across his face as he saw the messages.
