Chapter 55: Zerg Modifications: The Best in the World
Alex had long planned to use Zerg technology to modify his body. In fact, once he realized this world was "Edge of Tomorrow," he had this idea. Among the three StarCraft races, the Zerg's biotechnology was unrivaled. No one could match their excellence in physical modification.
Alex had already prepared for this back then. During his battle with the Lich King, Alex discovered that his physical fitness was too weak and entirely inadequate. Slow, gradual training would waste too much time, so he figured leaving it to the Zerg for a significant boost might be the better option.
However, after Miruune examined him, she somewhat helplessly informed Alex that his current body was too weak to withstand the core's power. Even just a modification would be challenging. Due to the disparity in strength, forcibly integrating the gene sequences might result in mutations. The Zerg might not care about their appearance, but Alex certainly did.
But Miruune proposed another suggestion.
"You're suggesting... a complete body reconstruction?"
"Yes, Master," Miruune nodded at Alex's question. She swayed her tentacles slightly before continuing, "To be honest, your current body's efficiency is too low. I believe the best method is to disassemble and then reassemble your body. During this process, I will gradually integrate the core's gene sequence and the Zerg gene sequence with your gene sequence. This will maximize the fusion of the temporal gene's power..."
"Well..."
Although mentally prepared, Alex still felt uneasy after hearing Miruune's explanation. Even Kerrigan in the game didn't undergo such a procedure. However, there was one crucial question Alex needed to clarify.
"Can I choose my external appearance?"
"Of course. The power of psionics can help maintain your shape. But Master, I believe this may be counterproductive. A form suited to your needs is better for evolution..."
"No, it's important for other reasons. Let's stick to my decision."
Alex firmly rejected Miruune's persuasion. Unlike Kerrigan, who was willing to abandon everything for revenge, Alex wasn't ready to sacrifice his appearance to that extent. Besides, the ability to disassemble and reassemble his body would be beneficial. Although his current body was similar to his original one, it still wasn't his. Reconstruction would make it entirely his own.
Moreover, the human body has its limits. So... I won't be human anymore!
Having made his decision, Alex removed his clothes and entered the incubation pool to begin his journey of "rebirth."
For Alex, it was an extraordinary experience.
He didn't know what Kerrigan's transformation felt like, but his was distinctly unique. Lying in the incubation pool, Alex allowed the strange liquid to engulf his body. Oddly, even submerged, Alex felt no suffocation. Gradually, he felt as if he were floating. Then, he noticed his body becoming numb, from his fingertips to his arms, then his shoulders, and finally spreading throughout his entire body.
If Alex could turn his head, he would see his fingers slowly dissolving, melting into the liquid. Fortunately, he felt nothing. Thus, he didn't have to witness his scalp dissolving, his skull separating, or his brain melting.
Time passed slowly.
Alex felt nothing, surrounded by darkness. The only sensation was a comforting warmth, akin to being back in his mother's womb—wait! Who remembers what it was like inside their mother's womb? Okay, another analogy: it felt like being cradled warmly in his mother's arms.
In the darkness, Alex was bored out of his mind, thinking about trivial matters. He had no idea how much time had passed or what his current condition was. After all, with his eyes melted away, he had no organs left for observation.
"Ding."
Suddenly, as Alex waited in the dark, the system's notification sound echoed in his ears. Excited, he quickly opened the information system. Soon, a line of system messages appeared before him.
[Main Quest 'Trial' Completed]
[User Receives Random Reward +1]
[User Receives Specialization 'Perfect Body']
[Body Reconstruction Commencing]
Immediately, Alex began to feel something new.
It was a very peculiar sensation.
In the previously murky liquid, Alex felt something in his body start to solidify. He could clearly experience the process of formation, from nothing to something. The slippery surface and deep grooves—well, that must be his brain.
Next came the nerves and eyes. Alex felt threads, like fine wires, detaching from his brain cortex and intertwining like living snakes, extending forward. Crystals began to form, and soon, the darkness before his eyes started to fade.
The reconstruction of his body continued—nerves, muscles, bones, internal organs. Initially, Alex felt nothing, but as it progressed, the intense pain became almost unbearable.
Zerg cosmetic surgery didn't seem to include anesthesia. As his body was restored, Alex felt a burning pain all over. The sensation before his skin re-covered his muscles was indescribably agonizing.
Luckily, this pain lasted only a short while. Soon, Alex regained control of his body. He opened his eyes and stood up abruptly.
"Crack!"
At that moment, Alex realized a thick membrane covered his body. Though it looked tough, it was surprisingly fragile. He felt no resistance as he stood up, easily breaking through the membrane. The cold, fresh air hit him, and he closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and then opened his eyes to look around.
He saw the familiar Louvre reflecting pool. Nothing seemed to have changed around him. Miruune was already there, waiting for him. She hurried over and spoke respectfully.
"Welcome back, Master. It seems your transformation is complete."
"Yes, I feel... pretty good," Alex replied, looking down at his body. Seeing his four-pack abs, he nodded in satisfaction. After the reconstruction, his body was no longer that of the weak William, the spoiled rich kid, but had returned to his own form. It felt right. Even though his soul was his own, being in someone else's body was uncomfortable.
Now... it felt much better to be in his own body.
He put on the clothes Miruune handed him and eagerly picked up a mirror to examine himself. The reflection was exactly what he remembered. Seeing his own face, Alex felt a deep sense of satisfaction. The previous feeling of incongruity was gone.
"How did the transformation go?" he asked.
"Surprisingly successful, Master," Miruune replied, unable to hide her astonishment and confusion. "Typically, genetic sequence reorganization and adjustment require a lot of time. Even with a successful fusion, it wouldn't restore the original form so easily. But you have completely returned to your previous shape..."
"I see," Alex nodded. According to Miruune, it should have been a long process, but it didn't take much time. Thinking back to the system's notification, it was clear this was another benefit from the system.
Now, what about his body's attributes?
Curious and excited, Alex opened his character attribute panel.
Quickly, lines of information appeared before his eyes.
