Edward's face was filled with worry. This was the first time since the challenge began that he had felt this way. However, he soon calmed down. From his bond, he could feel that while Whitey was in a difficult situation, he wasn't without a way to resolve it.
"Oh? I understand now..." Edward gazed at the mass of roots that blocked the Flickering Rose and became serious.
As the massive roots engulfed the small rabbit, the crowd fell silent once more. Some of them were happy, thinking that the monster would finally show its true form. Others felt relieved as the seemingly overpowered rabbit had been defeated. But only Edward and the Guild Examiner knew what truly was happening.
The Flickering Rose waited for the roots to pin down the rabbit so it could use its strongest attack. Meanwhile, Whitey hopped about the circle of roots, clawing away at the roots that sought to entangle him.
It took some time for Whitey to finally break free from the encirclement. But as soon as he landed on the floor of the battleground, another wave of vines emerged from the ground and latched onto the legs of the small rabbit.
Whitey tried to struggle out of the grasp of the vines, yet it was all useless as the vines shot up, dragging him into the skies.
"As I said, your pet doesn't have a chance against the Flickering Rose," the Guild Examiner said with a smug face as he gazed at the struggling rabbit. "Flickering Rose! End this now! Light Ray!"
The vines that had created a shield in front of the Flickering Rose opened, revealing a massive bud that slowly began to open as it absorbed light particles.
As the gigantic bud bloomed, a burst of blinding light erupted from its center, enveloping everything in its path. The light ray was so intense that it blinded everyone in the vicinity, causing them to shield their eyes.
The ray of light swiftly consumed everything in its path and burned straight through Whitey's body, leaving a gaping hole in his chest. The spectators gasped in horror as the light dispersed, and they finally saw what was left of the small rabbit.
"Hey! Why didn't you give up? Recall your pet now!" Cornelio, who had watched the entire battle in shock, was left terrified by the attack.
Even the Guild Examiner looked at Edward in a weird way. The strange rabbit was very strong, and there was no reason to risk its life just for an entry-level badge.
However, a small whisk of dark energy began to emerge from Whitey's body. Before anyone could react, the rabbit's body turned into a puff of smoke and vanished from the spot.
The entire crowd was still looking at the dark smoke when a small creature suddenly jumped out of the shadows of the vines and dashed in the direction of the Flickering Rose.
The Guild Examiner's eyes widened as he saw the rabbit swiftly darting toward the Flickering Rose. He quickly commanded the Flickering Rose to shield itself again, but the ray of light had consumed too much energy, leaving the small plant defenseless.
Whitey's claws shone as he prowled into the Flickering Rose. With a violent swipe, he split the left side of the plant, and a strange and eerie cry rang out in the stadium as the Flickering Rose fell down, twitching from the excruciating pain.
The Guild Examiner rushed to his pet and immediately transferred a portion of his spiritual energy to the small plant monster. "I concede..." he sighed in relief as he noticed small stems growing on the Flickering Rose's wounds.
"Sorry for the brutality," Edward said, giving the man a pitiful look. "It seems that Whitey doesn't know how to hold back."
The Guild Examiner didn't take offense to Edward's words, as he didn't sense any ill intention from him. "There is no need for excuses, we lost... If the ray of light had hit your pet, he would be just as injured," the examiner said, feeling relieved that the Flickering Rose had avoided a fatal wound in the last second. "Can you at least say what species is your monster? I can't believe that thing is truly a Black Fur Rabbit..."
"Well, it was a Black Fur Rabbit, but not anymore..." Edward let out an awkward smile as he gazed at Whitey, who had returned to his side.
"It... was?" The Guild Examiner recalled the Flickering Rose back to his spiritual space and gazed at the small rabbit. "In the last part of the fight, the first skill was Shadow Clone, right? I don't think that Dark Fur Rabbit can learn that."
From his connection with Whitey, Edward learned the name and effects of the skills he used. "Yes, Shadow Clone and the last one was Shadow Meld... As for if Dark Fur Rabbits can learn them, I don't know, Whitey isn't a Dark Fur Rabbit."
"Not a Dark Fur Rabbit?" The Guild Examiner finally understood what Edward was trying to say, but soon became even more confused. "A new evolution?"
Black Fur Rabbits had two evolutionary paths: Dark Fur Rabbit and Nether Rabbit, but he was sure that the small rabbit wasn't a Nether Rabbit, as they had some very distinguishing characteristics.
Edward just smiled and didn't give an answer. He recalled Whitey into his spiritual space to rest and left the stadium. The crowd started to cheer and clap as they saw Edward departing. The fight was incredible and exciting, with the small rabbit completely dominating the battle even against such a powerful opponent.
Cornelio's face was filled with complex emotions as he saw Edward leaving. He never expected that the boy's rabbit would be so strong. "Hey, let's get the badge," Cornelio said firmly as he pointed towards the entrance. "Where do you want to go after?" He decided to treat Edward more seriously now, as previously he thought that the young man was just a cocky kid.
Edward nodded in agreement and followed Cornelio toward the entrance of the Light Guild to get his badge. As they walked through the central district, where all the important buildings were located, they soon arrived at the enormous building of the Monster Association. It was ten times bigger than the Light Guild building.
Edward felt nervous as he entered the building, but with Cornelio leading the way, he soon relaxed. At the registration desk, Edward only had to provide his name and cultivation level and pay fifty pieces of silver to complete his registration. After receiving the Entry Level Tamer Certification, they headed straight to the library.
The Monster Association Library was divided into levels. To enter the first floor, all Edward needed was an Entry Level Badge from any of the guilds. However, the second floor and beyond were divided into elemental wards, and he would need the respective elemental badge to enter each ward.
"All the good stuff is on the second floor onwards, all you will find here is common information," Cornelio said, seeming bored as he passed around the halls of the library. "What type of book are you looking for? I'll tell you now that there aren't any spells on the first floor."
"Spells? Do you mean monsters' spells?" Edward felt overwhelmed as he stared at the numerous stands of books. "I just want a few books about geography, evolution, and some good compendiums about monsters and plants."
"Wait, you don't know about spells?" Cornelio was curious about Edward's upbringing; he had never met someone so oblivious to the outside world.
"Well, I never left my family farm..." Edward had become used to people thinking that he was strange, so he didn't try very hard to justify it anymore.
"As Tamers, we also have access to some spells. They are just simple things in the earlier levels like telepathy, cultivation sensing, and things like this. But as you grow stronger, you will have access to better and stronger spells." Cornelio stopped in front of one of the stands and got a book. "This is a good book to help you with spells, specializations, and professions."
Edward was about to ask what those specializations and professions meant, but he decided to give Cornelio some slack. After all, all the information he needed was in the book.
Cornelio continued to go around recommending books to Edward, who in the end, chose to borrow six books. One of them was a book about spells and specializations, two of them about evolution, one monster compendium, one book about the geography of the country he was in, and the last one was a big compendium about spiritual plants.
They all cost Edward two gold coins, and he was allowed to keep them for one entire month. Edward wanted to extend the rental period at first; he still needed to finish the rest of his parents' book. But eventually, he chose to focus on the borrowed books first.
Edward, being a student from a prestigious university in his previous world, knew that if he truly wanted to, he could devour all the books in just a week or so. However, with a multitude of new information and skills to acquire, he realized he needed to pace himself and take things one step at a time.
As he walked out of the library, Edward felt a sense of excitement at the knowledge that awaited him within those books. He couldn't wait to learn more about the world beyond his family farm and the monsters that lived in it.
Since Reynald and Steffon hadn't called them back yet, Edward decided to take advantage of the free time and go shopping. He knew that there were many things lacking in his house that he needed, so with Cornelio's help, he went out on a shopping spree.
The bustling marketplace was full of vendors and merchants selling a variety of goods, from basic household items to exotic trinkets and rare ingredients. Cornelio led the way, weaving through the crowds with ease as he guided Edward to the different shops.
Edward was amazed by the wide range of products available. He had never seen so many different types of fruits and vegetables before. There were also stalls selling different types of meat, some of which Edward didn't even recognize. Cornelio explained to him which were the best ones to buy, and which to avoid.
They also went to a few shops that sold household items. Edward needed some basic items for his home, such as blankets, kitchenware, and some new clothes.
After a long day of shopping, they finally returned to Steffon's shop with bags full of goods. Edward was grateful for Cornelio's help and was excited to finally make his home a little more comfortable to live in.
