Chương 2: 2

The group remained stuck in awkward silence on the school path. The delicate-looking girl glanced at her watch; it was already past 7:20. She tugged at the plump girl's sleeve and said, "Alright, Yumo, let's talk about this in the classroom later. It's almost time for class." Then, she gently took Youqin's hand, hesitated for a moment, and signaled her to head to the classroom.

Yumo, who was always eager to defend her friends, especially when they were hurt, reluctantly agreed. However, with class about to start, she realized that standing there wasn't doing anyone any favors, so she strode ahead, taking the lead.

The others followed behind. The delicate-looking girl quietly tugged at Youqin's hand. Her hand was cold, with no warmth at all, which made her even more worried. "Youqin, I know... Is it because of him?"

Youqin froze for a moment, her face filled with sadness as she shook her head.

I watched her back as she walked away, and my heart clenched.

Xiao Rui patted my shoulder. "Aren't you going?"

I shook my head. "Let's wait. Class is about to start."

Xiao Rui took my hand. At some point, my nails had dug into my skin.

Throughout the morning, Youqin was clearly distracted, and Xiangtong, her best friend—the delicate-looking girl—couldn't focus either, her heart entirely on Youqin. Though Youqin hadn't said much, Xiangtong could guess what was going on. Youqin had always been cheerful and lively, and Xiangtong had only seen her cry twice before. Once was more than four months ago, right around when I first met her. The second time was today. Though she hadn't witnessed Youqin crying firsthand, she could clearly sense the loneliness and sadness in her heart. There was only one person who could have caused this, and without a doubt, that person was me.

As her classmate, Xiangtong naturally took Youqin's side. Although she didn't say anything aloud, she secretly went through Youqin's phone, trying to find my number. To her surprise, it was no longer there.

What's going on?

A bit worried, Xiangtong wondered: Did they break up?

Seeing Youqin in so much pain, Xiangtong wanted to offer some comforting words but ultimately held back. Perhaps it was for the best. They were in a long-distance relationship, and breaking up sooner might make things easier for both of them. But still, it hurt to see her suffer... She had never supported their relationship from the beginning, and now she was even more resolute in her belief—she couldn't let anyone hurt her best friend!

Xiangtong didn't have lunch with her boyfriend, Ah Feng, that day. Instead, she gathered their friends from earlier to keep Youqin company. Yumo, always the gossip lover, had managed to figure out a few things and loudly declared that if she ever met the jerk who hurt Youqin, she'd make sure to beat him up. She even waved her fist in front of Youqin, vowing to stand up for her. But Youqin only forced a smile, pretending to be unfazed. Deep down, Xiangtong wished Youqin's boyfriend would show up, at least so they could see what this heartless man looked like. But so far, even Youqin probably hadn't seen him much recently...

Xiangtong shook her head and smiled, though no one knew what she was really thinking.

To be honest, Xiangtong wasn't wrong. She had only heard my voice but had never seen me in person. Other than my inner circle, the only other person who had seen me was Lingxuan. She knew what I looked like, though our relationship wasn't as intense as typical couples. Because of my circumstances, every time I visited her, it had to be in a rush, leaving us with barely even an hour together.

But I couldn't let things go on like this anymore. I had to make our relationship public, no more hiding. I wanted everyone to know.

So when Xiao Rui and I showed up in front of these girls, each of them reacted differently.

Lingxuan froze at first, then lowered her head, unable to take another step.

Xiangtong, with her sharp intuition, immediately figured out who I was. She glanced at Youqin but didn't say anything. Instead, she stepped forward, blocking Youqin from me, her attitude not particularly friendly. "If I'm not mistaken, you're the one who's been bullying Youqin, right? What are you doing here?"

Yumo's eyes widened, her temper flaring as she shouted, "So it's you! You're the jerk who's been hurting my dear Youqin! How dare you show your face here?"

Jojo and Xiaofeng, the other two girls, stood protectively behind Youqin, each holding one of her hands.

I let out a wry smile—who would have thought I'd be called a "pretty boy" by a girl?

But to be fair, my skin was indeed quite pale.

Without saying a word, I swiftly moved forward. Ignoring the other girls' discontent, I grabbed Youqin's hand and started walking away.

Jojo, being rather petite, could only watch helplessly as Youqin's hand was taken from her grasp. Paying no attention to the others, I glanced at Xiao Rui. He made a quick gesture with his hand, and suddenly, a thick fog enveloped the entire area. By the time the fog cleared, Lingxuan and I were already gone, leaving everyone else staring at one another in confusion.

"Are you still mad?" I asked, as we appeared by the riverside. Lingxuan tried to pull away, unsure how we had ended up there. She kept struggling to free her hand from mine, but I held on tight, not letting her go.

"Why are you here? To see me cry? To laugh at me?" Her eyes began to turn red again, tears welling up.

"Don't..." I wanted to wipe away her tears, but she stubbornly refused to let me touch her face, glaring at me instead.

"Please, just listen to my explanation..." I pleaded, trying to salvage the situation.

"What's left to explain? Isn't it true that... she's already with you?" Tears finally began to fall, turning her beautiful face into a sorrowful sight, like a delicate flower caught in the rain. My heart ached for her.

Unable to resist, I gently pulled her into my arms, but just as quickly, she pushed me away, crying, "I don't want this! This embrace doesn't belong to me. Go to your other girl. Why are you here with me? I don't need your pity... I don't need it!"

I sighed, grabbing her again and saying firmly, "Just come with me, and you'll understand!" With that, I led her forward.

This time, she didn't try to break free, perhaps giving me a chance to explain myself.

We entered a lavishly decorated café and sat down at a random table. Glancing around, I said, "Just wait a bit. Soon, you'll see what I'm talking about."

She remained silent, and I noticed she hadn't eaten anything all day. I hurriedly ordered some dishes from the waiter. At first, she refused to eat, but eventually, hunger got the best of her, and she ate a little.

Her face looked so worn out. Only now did I realize how deeply I had hurt her.

A moment later, two people walked in—a boy and a girl, both around seventeen or eighteen. The girl was quite beautiful, especially her large, starry eyes, which were round and captivating, making anyone want to take a second look. The boy was handsome too. At least on the surface, the two of them seemed like a perfect match. They found a table for two, sitting not far from us. From where Ling Xuan sat, she could see the girl's face, but I couldn't.

I motioned for Ling Xuan to glance at the girl behind us. She looked over, and her face froze. "Isn't she...?"

She gave me a strange look, her expression growing more complicated as she stammered, "You and her... aren't you...?"
