Chương 68: Chapter 68

☆ ☆ Beta Morgana (Greed) ☆ ☆

I awoke just after noon. Being awake during the day was odd, but I needed to reverse my schedule for appearance's sake. I laid down once I was finished temporarily storing the bottles of blood late last night and after a bit of snooping. Darius was already awake but hadn't moved from the spot where I left him.

I got up and put some pants on to find Morgana's sister and ask her about some clothes for him. He had to be starving, and I could smell food being prepared downstairs. In my vampiric form, typically, the smell of food was a mild annoyance. But once I turned into my victims, it wasn't so bad; sadly, I couldn't eat food in these forms, but it allowed me to walk in the sun, something that most vampires have longed for since they were turned.

I left Darius lying in bed and went to search for Luna. I wandered down the stairs to the kitchen and was greeted by several pack members. They, themselves, were inconsequential, and I could not pull their names from Beta Morgana's memories. I asked, "Where is my sister, the Luna? I need to speak with her immediately." One member piped up, "The Luna is in the basement tending to Jayce, Kara's True mate."

I would store this valuable bit of information until I could pass it along to Pride. She hadn't told us much about Sylas' intentions, but I recalled someone named Kara. I went to the basement and first saw a beautiful older blonde woman in a cage—a prisoner, perhaps? It's coming to me. I said, "Layla, I hope they have treated you well while I was away." The woman nodded and said, "Yes, is there an update?"

I paused briefly, recalling what she was talking about, before saying, "I will have you escorted to the conference room soon." Then I turned to the Luna, who was wrapping a wolf's recently salved paws in bandages. "Luna, may I have a word?", I asked. The wolf perked his head up and emitted a low growl. She responded, "Don't mind him; he's gotten even grumpier every day leading up to the full moon."

I said, "It's approaching soon; last night was the end of the first quarter moon, so it's just a week away." The wolf whimpered and huffed before his head fell to the floor with a thud. The Luna said, "I'll be finished with him in a minute; I'll meet you upstairs." I left her and the two captives in the basement and returned to the kitchen.

I sat down at a table and waited impatiently, my face propped up by my hand, and I gazed out the window. This would have been much easier if I didn't have to take care of Darius. My gaze was broken when a loud slam caught my attention. I looked up, seemingly unfazed by a male inches from my face. I could tell from his demeanor that he obviously outranked me. None of the other wolves would have dared disrespect me like that.

The kitchen that was once beaming with sound came to a dead silence, and everyone focused their attention on us. He snarled, "You were supposed to get the Ulfric to agree to let Layla join his team. I put my hand up to block his breath and stared him down, "Would you care to talk about this in private, Alpha Kayn." What had Morgana done? I didn't need another aggravation to deal with.

He stormed off, and I followed him into a conference room, recalling her memories as we walked. Once the door was closed, he decided to take his frustrations out some more. His voice raised, "You told Layla that you would take her to try to save Kara." I nodded, "I did tell her that initially, but The Ulfric had decided this without mine or Darius' input while we were away risking our lives to find her."

He tried to speak over me, but I quickly put him in his place, "Listen, Alpha Kayne, I respect your title, but you are a guest in this house. You need to calm down and let me speak. You're being irrational, and your anger towards me is unjustified." I don't think he was accustomed to being spoken to in that manner because he sat down and said, "I'm sorry, Beta Morgana. You're right; the least I could do is hear you out."

I uncrossed my arms, placed them on the conference table, and said, "I did speak to the Ulfric, and I told him that I had a similar plan, which included Layla; I explained that she was the only one that Kara would trust and that it would be beneficial to have her there." I paused before adding, "I also told him what she told me, which was that if things did go south, she would turn on us and attack anyone who tried to harm Kara, defending her to the death."

He looked up at me, shocked. I continued, "I spoke to Beta Darius afterward, and he said, knowing my brother, he had already made his mind up, but that he was a man of his word, and if he told you that he would hear me out, then he would. I didn't even know his decision until you so rudely burst in and pounded your fist on the table like a tantrumming toddler."

Alpha Kayn looked down, slightly embarrassed by his outburst, contemplating his following words. After a time he looked back in my direction, "I'm sorry to have bothered you about this, thank you for going to look for Kara and for showing me grace by not tearing my a new asshole in front of you pack members." I smirked and crossed my arms again, "No problem."

He left the conference room with his tail tucked figuratively between his legs, though it was apparent that it would have been literal if he were in his wolf form. I followed behind him just as Morgana's sister emerged from the basement. He nodded in her direction and went down to the basement himself. She looked in my direction and mouthed, "What was that about." I waved her over in my direction and told her what had happened. She replied, "What an asshole, we are doing everything we can to help him and his daughter."

I shrugged my shoulders. I turned to her and said, "Beta Darius is in desperate need of some clothes. He lost everything aside from the clothes on his back when we were attacked the second time." She nodded and said, "Follow me." She led me to her and Alpha Gray's room, where she rifled through his closet. I took a seat on the corner of their bed while she grabbed a few items.

She handed me several shirts and pants, then went through the drawers and found an unopened pack of boxers. She chuckled, "They might be a little big on him." I smiled, "It's better than nothing. He needs clothes to come down to eat; I don't care if he's naked in my room." She laughed, "Oh, I'm sure you don't mind that at all." I thanked her for the clothes and returned to my room to get him dressed and fed.

There he was still in bed. I walked over and asked, "Are you hungry?" He looked at me, then looked down at his stomach. At least things were starting to click. "I have clothes for you to put on.", I said, and he sat up. I asked him, "Can you put them on?" I was eager to see if he had improved from last night or if he was still an invalid. There was some progress as he could put the shirt on by himself, even though it was backward.

The lights were on, but it seemed no one was home. I corrected his mistake and helped him put on the new underwear and borrowed pants. The clothes were a bit baggy, but it was typical for Alphas, especially mated Alphas, to be the largest men in the pack. Once dressed, I led him downstairs to the kitchen and grabbed two bowls. The wolves on kitchen duty had made several crockpots full of hearty chili. I was thankful that I was unperturbed by the garlic I knew was present in the pots.

After filling the bowls, I asked him if he wanted to add shredded cheese to them, and he grunted; I took it as a yes and piled it on top. We walked toward one of the tables, and two lesser wolves made room for us. I looked at Darius, "Can you eat it by yourself?" He looked dazed and confused. After stirring in the cheese, I rolled my eyes and fed it to him. He would have to handle the temperature because I drew the line at blowing on the food.

He ate it but messily and finished both bowls. I asked, "Do you want more?" He grunted again, so I went to fill one of the bowls back up. I came back and spoon-fed the child in the man's body. I was going to have to get Morgana's sister to take a look at him or something because having to wait on him, hand and foot, was getting old real fast. Or I could try fucking him out of his stupor first and then go to the Luna if that didn't work.
