I had been driving for some time; poor Morgana had really pushed herself to the brink of exhaustion, taking care of me earlier and driving us out of the state. She fell asleep quickly once we traded places. She was resting her upper body on the pillow and her head on my shoulder while snuggled up underneath the blanket.
I felt much better than before. I hadn't lied about that, but I was also running on fumes. We were just about to reach the Ohio border, and I wasn't sure how much longer I would be able to let my mate rest peacefully before I needed her to take over the drive. We still hadn't heard back from my brother. I wasn't sure if it was because he was asleep or if he was in his wolf form patrolling our pack grounds.
I let out a deep yawn and widened my eyes in an attempt to keep myself more alert. The sun was starting to rise, so at least that would help. I drove another thirty minutes, yawning the entire time, before my phone rang. I answered it quickly, trying not to wake Morg, and whispered, "Morgana is asleep."
Alpha Draven obviously didn't hear me as his voice boomed over the hands-free intercom: "Sorry I missed your call, brother; what's your status?" Morgana shifted her body and blinked her eyes, seemingly blinded by the sun peeking over the horizon and awoken by my brother's loud voice. She stretched and yawned, still a bit dazed.
I said, "We are about to cross into Ohio. We need a safe place to rest. Which pack should we go to?" He paused, then said, "The closest pack to you is in Coshocton, Ohio, but it's out of the way and probably another three hours of driving time." "Damn.", I replied, "We're both worse for wear."
Alpha Draven said, "I fully understand that, given what you've been through. Not many wolves could say they were ambushed by six blood bags and lived to tell the tale." I chuckled wearily at his remark. I looked to Morgana, "What do you want to do?" She thought momentarily, "The sun is rising, so at least we have that as a barricade of safety."
I added, "We could just pull off and set up the back of the SUV to get some rest." Morgana's stomach rumbled, "Can we grab something to eat first? Plus, we need to get you some more vitamin K." Great, more pills, I thought to myself. I said, "Well, thanks for nothing, bro; I'll text you when we are back on the road." He chuckled at my smartass remark and let us go.
Morgana pulled out her phone and began scanning the nearby areas for what we needed. There's a grocery store called Kroger about eight minutes from the border. They opened at six this morning. I nodded, "Sounds great." She relayed the directions from her phone, instructing me where to go.
Once we arrived, I stepped out of the SUV gingerly and took the opportunity to stretch my sore body. I was definitely more sore from our fight against the vampires, but the drive had made me stiff as well. Morgana stretched for a bit before grabbing a cart from the parking lot that some asshat didn't put back in the corral.
I followed her into the store, and she immediately went to the medicine aisles. She found four different brands of the Vitamin K supplements and emptied the shelves of them all, filling a good portion of the cart. I shook my head and said, "My stomach isn't big enough for all of that.
She glared slightly, as if to say, "You will make room." I nodded in defeat, "Yes, ma'am." Then we went to look for food. It was too early for their hot bar selection, so we just grabbed snacky items since we didn't have access to a microwave. She added, "I'm sure there is someplace open for food."
I nodded, "Surely, and then we can just sleep in the car in a nearby parking lot." We went to the check-out area and paid for the supplements and snacks. I carried the bags to the SUV as she walked with her nose in her phone, following closely behind me. The sun allowed us to let our guard down for the first time since the incident.
"How about White Castle?" she asked as we reached the SUV. I responded, "Sounds good." She added, "Perfect. It's right beside a Marathon gas station, so we can fill up too. That way, when we're ready to head out, we can go." I smiled as I closed the trunk and let Morg drive to the restaurant since she already had the directions pulled up on her phone.
I walked into the White Castle while Morg filled up the car. There was no line this early in the morning, so service was fast. I asked for the Crave Case, which has 30 sliders of my choice. I got fifteen chicken bacon ranch sliders, fifteen 1921 bacon sliders, and two Cokes. The person behind the register's mouth dropped, "Just for two people?"
I chuckled and said, "Mostly for me, my wife will eat 6-8 max." They worked on my order, and I went to the drink station to get our drinks together. I carried the case out just as Morg was replacing the pump. We found a nearby place to park our SUV and quickly made up the back portion of the vehicle suitable so that we could rest after our meal.
We sat up front while we ate the sliders. Morgana had three of each type and even did a little happy dance during her meal; It was adorable. I ate the rest of them and drank my Coke. When Morg had finished, she retrieved one of the bottles of Vitamin K supplements and practically forced them down my throat.
"You can take the rest when we wake up.", she added with a smirk. I nodded. I felt like my blood had already returned to normal, but I knew she was worried, and I wanted her to be at ease. We crawled into the back and snuggled into sleep. The cold air outside didn't bother us as we melted into each other, sharing our body heat.
