Chương 17: XVI- Towards the Truth
Arakata Hisashi's POV
March came in a speed of light and the final examination that the entire school feared have arrived. I can clearly feel how nervous the students were and how exhausted the teachers for the preparations from the moment I entered the school grounds.
When I came to my class, everyone is silent and the dark circles under their eyes shows how much they spent the past weeks staying up all night to study and so I feel proud just like a parent seeing his children grow and work hard.
After a whole day of examination, the final bell rings and tears of joy came out to some of the student and some started jumping after passing their examination sheets.
"Finally we are free!!!" they shouted before dashing out of the classroom.
Yes, finally I'm free too! Or not. My busy days has not yet ended because I still have to check all the examination sheets tonight so that I can pass the result tomorrow.
I arranged the sheets and carried it back to the faculty office where some teachers were already busy checking the papers.
All of the teachers planned to do an all nighter together to finalize the entire results so that we can post it immediately.
I was only halfway checking the papers but I suddenly feel that the score is somewhat low that I expected and so, I went to the comfort room and called Nao to ask some probabilities to ease my doubts.
"Hello?"fortunately he answered right away.
"Ah Nao, can I ask you a favor right now?"
"Yes, what is is?"
"Actually I wanted to ask if the probabilities you told me back then about the examination results changed?"
"Let me take a look first."
"...."
"...."
After a few seconds of silence, I feel nervous of what he said next.
"I'm sorry, but I think it really changed."
"What did you see now?"
"The 80% passing rate is 94% probable and the 85% rate went down to 50% probability."
".. " I don't know what to say right now.
"Oh but don't worry because 94% is still a very high percentage so it is likely to occur so don't worry and besides, didn't you said that the 85% mark is just your bonus scheme and you still don't know what reward to give in case?"
Somehow, his words make me feel at ease and happy and so I accidentally made a bet with him.
"Okay then how about I treat you a box of strawberry cake when they don't reach the 85% and you treat me a dinner if they did?"
"Hahaha. Yes sure. I'm looking forward to my strawberry cake." And then he hung up.
Eh? Wait, why did he suddenly sound so confident about the bet? Is he just joking about the 50/50 chance and it is actually a certain failure rate.
But that's not a problem now because I'm confident that my students reach their original goal. I walk back to the my table and spent the night finishing my work.
It was already 3 in the morning when we all finalized the result and the summarization of the grades of all the students were delivered to the chairman.
Everyone passed and when I looked at the average of my class, I noticed that there are exactly half of the students reached 85%. Is this what Nao trying to say about the 50/50 chance? I can't help but smile on how silly Nao did just to have a free cake.
After taking a nap in my office table, I wake up and realized that everyone already went home except Sakaguchi-san who is still busy organising her desk after a chaotic week.
"Oh sorry if accidentally wake you up, I'm sorry making too much noise."
"No, it's ok. Are you heading home after this?"
"Actually I am planning to juat stay here and take a leave after lunch break later because I think it will be impossible for me to go back now." I can feel that she is not fine being left here and so I decided to help her.
"If I remember correctly, you are living at the Nakahara Area right?"
"Yes, and the train operation is already unavailable at this hour so it will be impossible for me."
"Then how about I give you a ride?"
"But I think the road to your place is on the other side right?"
"Don't worry, I'm just planning to drop by to my friends place and it's near your area so it won't be a problem."
"Then I'll take your offer." she smiled full of relief.
After I drop her off to her place, I drive straight to Nao's place to spend the remaining time to rest before I go back to school because his place is more convenient compared to my place which is a one hour drive away.
I informed Nao about this earlier and so I didn't hesitate to enter and finally find a sofa that became a perfect place for me to sleep.
After 3 hours, Nao woke me up with a cup of coffee. It is 5 am.
"Good Morning sensei." He greeted me teasingly.
"Good morning."
"I'm looking forward to my cake later."
"Yes I won't forget."
We chatted for a while about the things I missed for the past one month where I was really busy and I don't have time to drop by his clinic. After that, I took a shower and borrowed some of his clothes then drive back to school.
The hallway was already crowded by students who are all busy looking for their scores from the posted list in bulletin we did last night. As usual, the names of the top students remains the same just like that mysterious student from the other class named Nekomi Kizuna.
I walked in the office and saw the chairman inside talking to the people who are already inside.
"Arakata-sensei, perfect timing. Congratulations for being the best teacher to have the highest average result from your homeroom students." Everyone cheered for me and then the chairman continued. "And as a reward, I'll be giving you a bonus and your class will have a special reward during the graduation ceremony."
It was a perfect day. Everything worked out in the end. I immediately leave after work and drive straight to a cake shop to buy Nao's cake and because I'm feeling happy today, I decided to buy him an extra gift when I saw a nice elegant looking pen at the store next door.
When I arrived,his clinic is already have the close sign hanging out and so I excitedly entered but then I heard two people talking.
"..but Kazuya you don't have to visit me everyday especially when you have a part time job to go."
"But I feel really lonely when I can't see you even for a day."
"Hey you're starting to act cheesy again."
"Hahaha because I know you're weak when it comes to my cuteness."
"Yes, yes, you are cute because you are a kid, just like a baby."
"Hey stop calling me a kid already. I'm mature enough to show you how serious I love you."
I can't tolerate to listen the endless flirting from the other side of the door and so I barged in without even knocking.
"Here's your cake, and a pen." I put it on the nearest chair I see and left immediately.
It was the second time time to catch Nao flirting with someone but this time it hurts more than I can ever imagine and I don't know why.
I run back to my car without looking back and left. He tried to call me several times but I just turned my phone in to silent mode and continued driving.
Instead of driving back to my house, I ended up to the sea shore with some can of beers I bought while I'm on the way.
Maybe this is the right time to think and settle what I really feel about Nao.
