This room also had a window. A small rectangle near the ceiling let Cam see that, although it was almost nighttime, lights outside lit up the dark.
The door slowly opened and a young woman came in with a tray of food. She looked at Cam but said nothing. Cam could see a man standing in the hall with his assault rifle ready to use. The woman set the tray on the metal folding table in the corner and left. It was quiet again.
Out of curiosity, Cam lifted the cloth from atop the tray. In the dim light from outside the window, she saw that underneath was a piece of meat, a scoop of rice and a small orange.
“At least the food is getting better.” Cam smiled to herself as she bit into the steak. It was rarer than she usually liked but the smell and the taste told her that it was good beef. It was an improvement from what she’d been getting. She sat down on the mattress with the tray and ate most of the meat and rice, something that she hadn’t done since this began.
