Chương 16: The Realization
Kazuma carried Megumin to an alley. He put her down and untied her.
Kazuma "You are free to go now."
Megumin was surprised. "Uh..."
Kazuma turned around and was about to go.
Megumin "Aren't you about to do something to me?"
Kazuma "I could have done that long ago if I wanted to. Now, I am not interested."
Kazuma was about to leave.
Megumin "Why did you save me now?"
Kazuma "Because I wanted to."
Megumin "Explain??"
Kazuma "I'm not going to explain anything to you."
Megumin: "Why???"
Kazuma "Because you don't understand how I feel about you...?"
A moment of silence. Megumin shocked.
Kazuma "Just leave it..." He began to walk away.
Megumin "Kazuma, do you love me?"
Silence. Kazuma shocked. He walked away. Megumin just stood there and lost his thoughts.
Kazuma walked home. He is having mixed feelings about all this. His heart was racing. He reached home. He shut himself in his room, thinking about what Megumin asked him. After a short while, Aqua and Yunyun arrived. Then an ear dropped in Kazuma's room, hoping that they could hear something. But no sound came out. Then, all of a sudden, Kazuma opened the door. Aqua and Yunyun fell to the ground.
Kazuma "What are you two doing?"
Aqua and Yunyun, with a stupid grin on their faces, said, "Hahaha, we were just passing by."
Kazuma let out a sigh and walked over to the living room.
Yunyun "Kazuma-san, where is Megumin? I thought she would be with you."
Kazuma "I let her go. She must be somewhere in town."
Aqua: "Did something occur between the two of you?"
Kazuma "No."
Aqua: "Come on, Kazuma. I can read it on your face."
Kazuma "Just give me some space; I am really uncomfortable talking right now."
Aqua and Yunyun didn't ask him anything. They decided to give him some space. They were worried about him as well.
With that said, Kazuma went outside again. He went near the tree in front of their mansion and sat down beside it. His mind was searching for peace. Just then, Kyouya showed up.
Kyouya: "There you are, Kazuma."
Kazuma was irritated to see him again. "What do you want? Are you here to mock me again?"
Kyouya "You are really mad at me for everything I have done to you, aren't you?"
Kazuma remained silent.
Kyouya "You complained to Megumin that she didn't understand your feelings. But I must say you are the one who doesn't understand her."
Kazuma "Are you here to disturb me?"
Kyouya "No, not at all. I came here to tell you the truth."
Kazuma, "Truth??"
Kyouya "Megumin asked me to take her into my team only because she had these feelings for you. She was totally into you from the very start. After the battle with that Dullahan, she came to me and asked me to take her into my team in the hope that she could become stronger and catch up to you."
Kazuma was really shocked. "What are you talking about? I don't get."
Kyouya "Listen, Kazuma. Megumin likes you a lot. But she thinks that she is not strong enough to stand by your side. She thinks that she always puts you in trouble because of her weakness. She came to me to help her get stronger so that she could catch up to you."
Kazuma was really shocked when he realized the truth.
Kazuma "Why didn't she tell me about this? I could have helped her."
Kyouya "Don't be ridiculous; she thinks that she is the one who causes trouble for you, and she doesn't want to put you in more trouble."
Kazuma can't believe what she just heard from him.
Kazuma "But I thought you and Megumin..."
Kyouya "No, no, you got it all wrong, Kazuma. She wanted to know how you felt about her. That's why we acted like a couple in front of you. More importantly, how can I cheat on Clemo and Fio while they are watching me 24/7? Do you think that they would let another girl in just like that?"
Kazuma: "Actually, you say..."
Kyouya "Yeah, she wanted to know how you feel about her. She was testing you. But I am really sorry to say this, bro. You were a fucking disappointment. You didn't give a shit about her feelings. You were trying to ignore her and her feelings this entire time."
Kazuma is struggling with his words, "I-I..."
??? "He is telling the truth, Kazuma."
Kazuma looked back to see Aqua.
Kazuma "How did you know?"
Aqua "We met her before we got to the Traven. She asked me to do this prank with her. When I asked her why, she just told me that she wanted to know your reaction. Then we brought those four adventurers and purposefully set you up."
Yunyun "I know her much better than anyone here. She is my childhood friend and my rival. I am not going to support her pranks. But she is not the kind of person who chills out with any random guy or something. I bet she had never told these kinds of jokes to anyone before. I think she is totally into you, Kazuma."
Kazuma is speechless.
Just then, Clemo and Fio came in. They also supported Megumin.
Kyouya "Kazuma, you better go and talk to her. She is in the guild. Don't disappoint her this time."
Kazuma "Oh, man, I messed it up, huh? I think I got to go."
Kazuma went to the guild. He found Megumin sitting alone at a table. He approached her.
Kazuma "Megumin, I would like to talk to you about something. Can we just take a walk?"
Megumin is acting mad. "Sorry, I am not interested."
Kazuma "Come on, Megumin, I am sorry to avoid you like that. Can we just go home?"
Megumin "I told you, I am not interested. You may go."
Hearing this argument, another adventurer said, "Excuse me, do you have any problems?"
Megumin "Yes, this man is disturbing me."
Adventure 1: What's your problem, bro? Can't you see she is uncomfortable?"
Kazuma quickly thought of a solution.
Kazuma "This is a husband-wife problem. Can you please give us some space?"
Megumin turned red and screamed, "H-H-Husband-W-W-Wife."
Adventurer 1: Oh, my apologies."
Kazuma "Come on, Megumin, just forgive me once."
Megumin "What are you talking about, Kazuma?"
Just then Luna interfered: "Kazuma-san, did something happen?"
Kazuma "Me and my wife, right here, argued this afternoon. Now she is mad at me. Can you please help me solve this problem?"
Luna immediately got the humor in saying, "Listen, Megumin, you should not argue with your husband in a place like this. Whatever it is, just hear him out and forgive him. I am really sure he loves you a lot."
Megumin's face is red. She waved her hands. "No, no, you got it wrong. This guy is not my husband."
Kazuma is acting hurt and crying. "You are hurting my feelings; please don't do this to me, honey."
Megumin "H-H-HONEY..."
Adventurer 2 "Look, your husband is sorry for what he did; just forgive him already."
Adventurer 3: "Come on, young woman, you can't do that to your man in public."
Adventurer 4 "Middle understanding and forgiveness are very important for a successful life. Small mistakes can be forgiven. So please, young lady."
Megumin's face has become tomato red. She ran out of the guild building screaming, "You got it all wrong!!!!!!"
