Chương 98: Why Are You Still Here?

The moment Nathenel returned to the estate, the already quiet mansion fell into the lap of dead silence. All the staffs withdrew earlier than usual, nobody except the Butler was outside. Those who work here are not ignorant of the Head's worst temper, and today he wasn't acting up for no reason, for Nathenel staying calm was the last thing. "Miss Palwalker it's for the best that you greet master tomorrow." The butler had insisted when Susan had asked about Nathenel's whereabouts. Although it was essential for her to meet him, but if he is in his worst of tempers there was no helping. Susan didn't press further, although the butler was kind and polite but he was following orders of the Lady of the House.

As the night advanced the noises of breaking glasses intensified and Susan couldn't hold back anymore, this wasn't the time to think about Lady Magnolia's sanctions.

From outside the door of his bedroom she could hear the intermittent breaking of glasses, and very faintly his voice was coming out, it was obvious he was loud enough for the voice to come of this large wooden door.

"Do you think I am going to take their lame excuses. Now they are just sucking upto the Faunoas...Foea..." Susan took two steps backwards she felt hesitant to hear further.

'So he is with Miss Clemen in his bedroom with doors shut' And despite knowing every possible reason behind it, she felt like the 'Other woman' eavesdropping on an intimate conversation. Although she was his fiancée and they even agreed on tying a (contractual) knot and consummating it. From Susan's perspective his trust and bond Foea was unmatchable. "I am just a temporary wife." She murmured.

Susan shook her head, this was not the time to lose her spirits, now my virtue should lead me more than my emotions, "Even if temporary I am still the wife, and I should help him in my little capacity."

Reluctantly she pushed the door with trembling hands, to her surprise it went agape immediately.

Foea was standing still in front of the mini bar aisle in his room, while shards of broken glasses and bottles were spread all over, they were sparking under the flickering light of the chandelier. The entire room was in a mess. Nathenel was slouched at one corner of the luxurious couch. He was huffing like monster in the middle of a chase. But today even his temper was the worse, unlike other times he didn't even approach her or try to lay a finger. Others might not know, but Foea knew the reason, and she thanked the calm yet strong woman several times in her mind. The calming pills weren't helping either, and this got worse because no sooner than he returned Rosalie Magnolia had created quite a scene, which primarily included cursing Susan Palwalker, and also leaking the news of the investors trying to get on board with Faunoa corporation which Foea had been desperately trying to hide for the time being.

Susan stepped into a broken glass, she fortunately had her slippers on, but it made quite some noise in the room.

"Miss Palwalker" Foea noticed her presence and more than surprise she strangely was relieved.

"Susan" Nathenel was startled, the moment she saw her, ot was like cold water washing down a burn. Susan was scared, however such gross sights were not new for her, for her father often pulled up such stunts to intimidate her.

She slowly walked up to him, like approaching an injured animal, the glass pieces crushing down, but one of them got stuck penetrating her feet.

"Ah" she winced.

"Shit" he cursed under his breath and rushed upto her. The change of mood was so vivid and fast that to Foea who had been watching, it seemed like a magic. He picked her up

and put her on the couch.

"Are you alright? Why did you bother coming here? I... I... am so sorry, did I wake you up?" His words hurried out of panic. The red blood spread over her ivory white skin when he hurriedly plucked the glass piece.

"Get the first aid"

Susan could sense he was running a high fever, his hand was injured, and on top of that he was drunk.

He was the one who needed to be taken care of. Susan took the box from Foea, who looked dead beat, and sleep deprived. "Miss Clemen, I will take care of him for now. I apologize for the poor hospitality, for tonight you can use my room. Also there's food. Please get some rest." Foea nodded, although she felt a strange clutching feeling in her chest momentarily, but she knew well it was just her unnecessary territoriality. The owner is someone else now, she is just a hired employee. Susan was like a magic spell. She left immediately before her stupid feelings got better off her.

He looked like a teenager throwing up a tantrum, when she didn't let him tend her wounds. But instead place her tender palms on his forehead, "You are burning Nathenel, and look at your hands. Why are you doing this?" She rebuked him. To his surprise he didn't feel upset, but happy, no one has ever spoken to him in this way, not even his mother.

"Here let me see it" she picked up his wounded hand and started tending, he was taken aback, and let her do it, never had he felt such a gentle touch of care.

His rage had melted away, he didn't know when, perhaps when his woman came to his sight. Suddenly a strange panic gripped him and his face turned grim.

"You know about everything that has been happening.Don't you?" He asked.

She nodded while concentrating on the first aid.

"Then why are you still here Susan?Don't you see everyone is leaving." Desperate gray eyes were seeking a possible reason.

Everyone was leaving him, his world was falling apart, he was sure even the Palwalkers didn't have much to do with him now. They weren't a real couple, just a paper work. Paper works worth millions had burnt in the fire. She wasn't an employee who is possibly sticking around because of a paycheck.

"Or, perhaps is this an act of kindness before saying farewell?" His smile was that of mockery towards himself.

Susan calmly finished tying the bandage, she knew where he was coming from, and he wasn't in the rights mind.

"This fever will go away if cold water is poured.Let me help you first." She tried to get up, but he pinned her at the corner of the couch.

"Susan. Are you avoiding me now?"

Looking straight at him she said, "I am not avoiding you."

"Then why weren't you there when I returned? I thought you don't want to see me."

Susan was surprised, that of all people, he had wanted to see her, the most useless person.

The strong scent of alcohol was evading her.

"I was asked to stay in my room. But is that important right now?" His body was flushed.

She tried to push his hard chest, but he was unmoving

"It's important to me. So you didn't come here to tell that you are leaving? You will be staying. With me?"

"Aren't you asking the obvious?" She replied softly, 'Where would a useless girl like me go anyway.' She thought. She caressed his temple with her thumb to calm him down. He reacted to her touch.

His jaws tightened, even though he was intoxicated, he remembered what all his mother had said about her, and she was the one who had said, "Do you think that wench would stay if you had nothing tomorrow? Get back to your senses honey, don't be like your father. The Langdons are still willing to back you up."

Susan's eyes were glowing with plenty of emotions huddling, she held his face gently, he truly was a messed up teenager, so pulled him into an embrace and gently patted his back.

"It's an accident Nathenel, it's not your fault. I know very little, but isn't business also about risks? This fire can't burn down your views and dreams. You can make things right, so lets grow our wings together."

In the last few hours he had heard several things, but no one ever said this to him.

"Now hurry..." her words words were cut down he flooped over her burying his face on her chest. He had felt a woman's chest several times in his multiple sexual encounters but never had he felt this kind of warmth.

"Susan" he inhaled her scent and his body started trembling hard.

Was he crying now? Susan was confirmed immediately with the warm wetness.

Susan would often cry pressing down on her pillow at night, she often wished someone would hug her in those times. She felt a strange sense of peace in giving that hug today.

He tried to muffle his cries, as she gently caressed his back for a long time. His body heat was going down surprisingly.

After she was sure he had calmed down, she decided to tell him something unexpected, "Nathenel I have thought about a way out of this mess. I know I am lacking in various ways, but it's something I have come up with after some thinking." She paused, but he kept still on her chest, "Do you promise to hear me out with an open mind?" He nodded like a child. And then what she said blew him away completely.

"Announce our wedding."
