Chương 4: Chapter 3: Aspen Heights

I watch as the male leaves, his words ringing in my ears and swirling around my thoughts. I look down as Robin takes a few steps away from me, her bright orange eyes locked on the trail the male has left behind.

"You know, he kind of looks li-" I cut her off with a glare as Robin turns her head to look back at me.

I know what she's going to say, but I don't want to hear it. I've been trying my hardest to let go of the guilt that plagues me for "letting" Lawliet die, but the stench of his infected wound and the heat of his fevered body refuse to budge from my recent memory. I give myself a shake, then pad forward and open the belly of the rabbit for Robin to eat; not wanting to hear any more on the topic.

After making my way up the hill, I stare down towards the creek where I can smell that the male has headed. This "team-up" thing could be a good idea, and he has said it would only be for the winter but...I'm not great at getting along with other wolves - evidentially. I don't trust easily and it's taken me a while to get used to having Robin around. However, there is that pack to worry about just across the river. With Lawliet gone, Robin and I are even more exposed to attack - they could easily overpower both of us and I dread to think what they will do if they catch us. My tail curls underneath me at the very thought of what they might do to us. Having someone who can fight as an ally might not be such a terrible idea. I park my haunches with a huff, unsure of what to do. Every instinct in me screams not to go through with this, but if he ends up discovering the Bison pack, then he might join forces with them and that would turn them into even more of a threat.

I sigh. I've been debating it for half an hour now. It can't be that bad, right? I mean...if he shows any sign of wanting to hurt us, I can just kill him, right? Or at least, choke him out. Hopefully. That might be tough; he is almost double my size after all. I look over my shoulder, trot down to what's left of the rabbit and gulp down a few mouthfuls. I give Robin a nudge towards the den to signal her to stay here, which is a form of communication that we've developed over the last two months, then I reluctantly head down to the river to go find the male.

After a few minutes of walking, I spot the male sitting by the river looking towards the Bison territory. I bare my teeth in disgust towards the Bison grounds, then walk towards the male. Then I realize the immediate problem. I naturally walk rather quietly, mainly due to not having any weight on me, and I don't particularly fancy getting my face torn apart. I stop about two meters behind the male and deliberately step on a twig I see poking out of the snow to get his attention. His ears turn towards me and his head snaps around to face my direction.

"Oh, it's you." He says, sounding slightly disappointed, although I'm unsure why. "What's your answer?" He questions, tilting his head.

I stare at him for a few seconds, checking for any tell-tale signs of deceit, then warily nod. Let's do it.

Once the male shows he is happy with my decision, I turn my gaze to the landscape around us; I have an uneasy feeling crawling up my spine and I don't like it. I catch a glimpse of two dark coloured blobs making their way across the open plains towards the tree line, but it's hard to tell what exactly they are from this distance and the wind isn't facing towards me so I can't tell by their scents either.

Just then, my ear twitches to the sound of a faint squeal. Then another, this time louder, the voice easily distinguishable.

ROBIN!

My head snaps to face the direction her voice is coming from and I race off towards it, not caring whether or not the male follows me.
