My name is Calypso. I am the third child of Tobias and Laura Sabulo. They come from a long line of glass and salt merchants.
We live in a time of tiers in the social class. The Elites are the highest ranked tier. They run the most important jobs such as the government, transportation, and communication systems.
Then the Majors who are second-tier. Their jobs include owning essential businesses such as food, medical care, and education. Often their kin work in these fields until they take over owning them
After that is the Minors, who are better known as the well paid working class. My family falls into the Minor classification. Mainly because we sell goods that everyone needs or wants. Our grandparents own two well known and highly thought of businesses. The Crystal Ball is our glassware shop where we have already prepared items for sale. My grandfather also does custom orders for many Majors and even an Elite! The other shop is the NaCl because my father has a unique sense of humor. Here we sell, as I am sure you have guessed, salt.
Our fourth class is the Subordinates. They are the less paid working class. Their wages are meager at best. Although they are paid little, their jobs are still important. Some examples include sanitation, entertainment, and manual laborers.
The bottom of our class system is known as the Nadir. While you cannot be born into this system, you can be reclassified into it.
All other systems are given by birthright. Well, with few exceptions. You can move up tiers by one of three ways. First, you can move tiers by acts of heroism. These include solving community or worldwide issues. Second, you could proceed by enlightenment. This would be extensive education and furthering your field of study. Lastly, an advancement could occur if you complete a series of trials. They vary from person to person and few have accomplished social reclassification this way.
I am working toward my own transfer through enlightenment. My family was shocked when I had announced I was continuing education. Even more so when I had impressed my instructor, a well know Major. At the end of my course I was offered an Elite job for the government. I was the lowest class in a century to be given such an honor. While I am finally accomplishing my dreams, I feel a rift growing between myself and those I hold so dear.
