Chương 3: Money!

"Here is your burger, madam," the waiter said, placing the plate on the table.

"Thank you," I replied, offering a faint smile.

And there went the last of my fifty dollars. I had spent it on some extremely cheap clothes—hardly enough to make me look good or decent, but it would have to do. I'd managed to buy a simple black jacket and a black face mask. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough left to afford decent jeans, let alone something better.

Now, I needed to figure out where to sleep tonight and, more importantly, test my newly unlocked powers. With my assimilation now at 70%, I had access to two significant abilities: [Bone Weave] and [Blood Weave].

[Bone Weave] made my bones as hard as steel, nearly unbreakable. [Blood Weave], on the other hand, allowed me to control my blood at will, but I already saw its potential. These powers put me closer to the strength level of someone like Luke Cage, Daredevil, or Moon Knight—a solid street-tier hero or villain, depending on what path I chose.

I took a bite of my burger, letting the thoughts swirl in my mind. It was 8 p.m. now, and I still had two hours before nightfall. Plenty of time to plan before heading out to hunt.

I glanced to the side, catching the flicker of my shadow. 'What do you say, little guy?' I asked silently, letting my thoughts connect to it.

Thanks to [Shadow Control], I now had a sentient shadow—an extension of myself, The abilities I had left to unlock—[Flame of Divinity], [Soul Weave], and [Shadow Step]— and more shadow would only come once I strengthened my soul core. For now, this shadow was my closest companion.

The shadow seemed to huff at me, crossing its spectral arms.

"Don't look at me like that," I said, narrowing my eyes at it.

It sighed dramatically, making its exaggerated annoyance known.

"Alright, alright, I'll give you a name. That's what you want, right?"

The shadow nodded, making a thumbs-up motion.

"Okay, let me think." I leaned back in my chair, pretending to deliberate. "How about... Shadow 1?"

Its face immediately twisted into an expression of pure annoyance.

"Oh, you don't like that? Fine, fine. What about... K? Kind of a cool name for a shadow, don't you think?"

It sighed again but made an OK sign with its hand, begrudgingly accepting the name.

I grinned. "Alright, K. Now, go find me some prey to hunt."

With that, K separated from my shadow, slipping away find some criminal, to me "borrow" from. them .

iIt didn't take long for K to find some criminals. Through our shared senses, I could see and hear everything within a four-kilometer radius before my connection began to fade.

Leaving the restaurant, I moved swiftly into a nearby abandoned warehouse. The building was in disrepair—broken windows, rusted beams, and a floor littered with debris. It was quiet, secluded, and perfect for what I needed.

Inside, I summoned the Puppeteer's Shroud,. I adjusted the black mask over my face, obscuring my features.

By the time I finished preparing, K had returned from its first mission. It slithered out from the shadows, the shadow its smug demeanor was clear—it practically oozed pride.

"Someone's feeling accomplished," I said, glancing down at it.

K smirked—at least, that's what I imagined—before pressing itself firmly to my feet.

I crouched on top of the warehouse, the dim light from inside casting faint shadows on the roof around me. Below, I could see the criminals moving about, their operation in full swing. They were transporting drugs, crates being hauled in and out .

I counted twenty men in total, none of whom seemed to be superhuman or mutants—at least as far as I could tell. Ordinary criminals, but that didn't mean they weren't dangerous.

"K,". At my command, the shadow uncoiled began wrapping around me like a living armor. Its presence sent a chill down my spine As i was doing it for the first time , but it also gave me strength. I could feel the subtle enhancements to my body—heightened durability .

The plan was straightforward: take out one of these guys, steal his weapon, then systematically eliminate the rest. No witnesses, no hesitation. Gather their money and any useful intel before slipping away into the night.

As I surveyed the scene below, my fingers instinctively brushed the edges of my black mask. Keeping my identity hidden was crucial—slipping up wasn't an option.

With a deep breath, I steadied myself. "Let's do this."

Leaping silently from the rooftop, I descended like a shadow falling from the sky, my target already in my sights.

I landed silently on the back of one of the men, his head snapping up in alarm.

"What th—"

Before he could finish his sentence, my arm wrapped around his neck, locking him in a deadly chokehold. He thrashed, clawing at my grip, but it was futile. With the enhancements from K and my own determination, it only took a few seconds before the fight drained out of him. His body slumped lifelessly to the ground.

I crouched, reaching into his pocket to retrieve a handgun. The gun felt cold and light in my hand, . Turning toward the nearest targets, I spotted two men standing by a car, chatting casually, unaware of the silent chaos unfolding just a few feet away.

Without hesitation, I raised the weapon and squeezed the trigger. A loud crack echoed through the warehouse as the first man dropped, followed by the second. Blood pooled beneath their bodies, the shock on their faces frozen in time.

Now they knew I was here.

A smirk tugged at my lips beneath the mask. The element of surprise was gone, but it didn't matter. The fear I'd just ignited in their ranks was a weapon in itself.

"Let the hunt begin," I murmured, slipping into the shadows as the shouts and frantic scrambling of the remaining men filled the air.
