Chương 28: Field Boss

In that direction, about two football fields away, inside a small cave, there was a horde of monsters. At this distance, Jake could barely recognize what those were.

By the looks of it, these monsters were a size smaller than that lone ape.

Taking a wild guess though, those were probably apes as well.

By the energy levels of those monsters...

Good. Very good!

Looks like they had intruded into field boss territories.

'Sorry. We encountered a large horde of goblins. In battle, I lost my sense of direction.'

'As a result, we entered the field boss territory by accident.'

'I'm sorry, but Detector didn't make it.'

Thinking of Beetle's 'apologetic' explanation, Jake coldly chuckled. 'What a coincidence. I can use those excuses too.'

Casually tossing up a billiard ball, Jake begun 'juggling out of boredom'.

'You want to play? Fine! Let's play!'

'We could have had a nice safe trip. But you just had to make this complicated.'

Just half a day ago, these guys were total strangers to Jake. Sure. They were unfriendly. But Jake couldn't care less about what these guys thought of him.

Honestly, Jake didn't feel like he'd done anything hostile to Beetle.

Yet, now, Beetle wanted him dead. For what? This guy probably plotted for this for a while now.

Shaking his head, Jake didn't feel like thinking deeper about this matter.

'How troublesome...'

'Whatever then. Fine by me.'

Jake took a deep breath.

Jake was a laid-back guy. But setting up a death trap against him? This crossed the line.

After making a final decision, Jake relaxed a little. His flared-up emotions quickly calmed down. His mind cleared up.

'It's better to use this time to think through my plan.'

Jake took a look at Mage. White fumes were starting to puff out of that kettle now. A small whistling sound could be heard.

'Is that the purpose of that kettle? A signal?' Jake flicked his brows.

As expected, a moment later, the ground started to lightly tremble. A low but loud stepping sound could be heard now.

A large white-furred figure was trotting in this direction. Coming down a hill diagonally, the monster was careful not to bump into any trees for some reason.

Maybe this was also one of its background commands.

Being over 5 meters tall, it's impossible for this monster to hide among the trees. With each step, the trees around it trembled and swung a few times.

As a result, Jake's group was alerted early.

By the speed of that monster, it was going to reach here in ten seconds. The white-furred ape was not very fast. Looked like a strength-type monster.

However, this was not something a typical Detector could outrun either!

Without a heads-up, Beetle dashed back. He shot towards the path the group had just made.

Reaper took half a second to understand the situation. Without any hesitation, he dived into the shadows of the pine trees and disappeared. Looked like a diver jumping into water.

But in reality, this was just an optical illusion. As a detector, Jake could 'see' that the big dude was just invisible. He was following Beetle now.

Jumping up, quickly looking around, leaving his backpack behind, Jake 'ran off' in another direction.

Still maintaining his careless blank expression though. Acting was not his thing. So Jake chose not to. Ah. Good enough. Who's viewing in detail anyways?

Unlike Beetle's uphill path, Jake chose a path that's mostly parallel to the lake.

The next moment, Beetle changed direction. Even after running off, he had been paying attention to the situation behind him.

A defenseless detector had to be choosing the safest path right? After checking the map, Beetle realized that they were a bit deep into field boss territory.

What if a group of monsters was blocking their escape path?

In a quick moment, Beetle the warrior had ran past Jake. Then that big fella in a black tight suit followed right along.

Jake ran a few more steps, and then stopped. 'Well. Have fun. Good luck.'

'You are plotting for my death, yet you still want to benefit from my detector ability?'

'How greedy.' Jake shrugged.

'Didn't become taunt quest NPC #2 I see. No profit for me. How unfortunate...'

In the end, Jake was just an explorer, not a saint.

He couldn't just shrug off kill intent. Especially when this trap would have worked... If Jake didn't transmigrate over that is.

"Eh. Uh!" Mage stood up wearing a panicking expression.

Looking back, yep. Mage finally got a hold of himself.

"Holy... Holy! Ah! Run!" The simple-looking dude took a few steps back, then turned to run.

Without further thought, Mage ran up the hill. It's the path the group had just made.

After dashing up the hill for a moment, he finally remembered that he had abilities. A skateboard made of rocks formed under his feet. Once started sliding away, his fleeing speed quickly ramped up.

'Physics does not approve this phenomenon. But magical doesn't care.' Jake nodded.

Every explorer had a map. During the seven days of classes, they were taught map-reading as well.

So if Mage moved carefully, he should be able to get out safely without much trouble.

Seeing that Jake was not planning to escape, the ape slowed down a little.

Fully coming out of the pine trees, it stepped onto the lush grass field. The ground trampled a little.

With each step, the monster left a deep footprint onto the soft ground.

Long and dense white furs. This ape was walking on its long front arms and its legs. Ignoring the metallic-looking coils fully covering its forearms, this was basically just an ape.... that's a little oversized.

Just like any other monsters, the ape fixated its mindless gaze onto Jake.

Threat level by instinct: Low

Jake stared back at the ape. He was curious whether monsters could blink or not.

Beetle saw this differently though. Yep. Even during his escape, he had paid attention to the situation behind him.

Seeing that Jake had attracted the aggro of that field boss, Beetle stopped running.

In this short amount of time, he was already more than a football field away from the action now. At this safe distance, as long as he remained quiet, that field boss probably won't notice him.

Knitting his brows, Beetle took a look at the big fella beside him.

Beetle stayed behind to confirm the completion of his mission. He wasn't certain why this big fella stayed behind.

By the looks of Reaper's expressions, this big fella seemed to be enjoying the view. It was as if Jake's 'misfortune' was the best entertainment to him.
