Chương 1: First Rule: Survive!

It was around 6 am, and the sun has just started rising. I just got back from my daily run, as always, it was refreshing.

"I'm back," I opened the front door and entered. The lights in the hallways are lit so she must be awake now.

"Hm?" I caught a whiff of an aroma, it came from the kitchen. I took off my shoes and put them on the shoe rack right beside the door. Then I went to my room and showered before going to the dining hall and putting my clothes on.

"Good morning, Saeko." I greeted. The beautiful girl in front of me is, Busujima Saeko, my childhood friend. Currently, I'm living together with her after my parents died last month. I had to move away from our previous home to Tokonosu city.

"Oh, Hajime-kun, good morning." She flashed a smile. And then she started setting up the breakfast she cooked.

"Let me help," I started helping her. I got the utensils we need. "Did Oji-san call back already?"

"No, he should be busy with his trip."

"I see," I nodded. Her father left a week ago for a trip overseas. "He went to America, right?"

"Yes," Saeko replied.

"Hmm, did he go there for an exchange?" I muttered. Well, I won't be surprised if he did, he is one of the few grandmasters in Japan in terms of swordsmanship.

We had our breakfast shortly and then we went to school after. We were in our third year of high school, and we would be graduating the next year if everything proceeded smoothly.

.....

"Today's lesson is about..."

I stopped listening to the teacher about that lesson. I'm bored, I already knew about that. I should focus more on thinking of survival plans in case a zombie apocalypse happens.

I took out my notebook titled "Survival Notes for the Apocalypse", it was a collection of my survival ideas, rules, reminders, etc in case the world descends into an apocalypse.

I started writing these notes when I was five years old when I first watched my zombie movie. I was fascinated by the idea of a zombie apocalypse happening. When I saw the mistakes, survivors did in the movies, something inside me clicked, what if this happens in real life?

So I started writing survival notes, it started slowly before becoming faster as I became more knowledgeable. Not only that, but I also started doing physical training at an early age. I pestered my parents to let me learn martial arts, mainly Kali and Karate.

I also started learning about various topics like agriculture, survival tactics, etc, most things I deemed necessary in case of an apocalypse, I learned them. I even went to America and learned about guns.

"... jou...Tenjou! Are you listening to me right now!"

I got out of my thoughts as I heard my name being called. I looked up and saw our teacher looking at me while gritting his teeth.

"Pfff–"

I could hear my classmates snickering but I ignored them. Unimportant people don't need to be acknowledged. Most of them would die anyway, in an event of an apocalypse.

"What is it, sensei?" I asked.

"I asked if you were listening?!" Our teacher growled, "Nevermind, why don't you answer this problem then?"

I glanced at the math problem on the board and stood up. I walked towards it and grabbed a chalk. I then started writing the solution and the answer.

"...Done, sir." I gently put down the chalk on his table and walked back to my seat.

"...Correct," The teacher said after seeing my answer. "Let's resume our class."

"Haaa," I just sighed. Now, where was I? Ah yes, survival notes, what should I add hmm.

That class proceeded as usual, it was boring as hell but I endured through it, after all, I am a "student". All of it changed when the school's public announcement system was heard.

[Attention to all Students and Faculty! Attention to all Students and Faculty!]

[There has been an incident inside the campus! Faculty, please lead the students through emergency procedures and evacuate quickly!]

[We repeat—! Aaghhhh—!]

[H-help—!]

When I heard the announcement, I stayed calm in my seat and didn't stand up quickly. I looked toward Saeko who nodded at me, it seems she is still calm, that's good. It took just a few moments before all hell broke loose, and the students rushed to exit the room in a hurry.

I waited for them all to get out before standing up and wearing my bag. It was a bag I always ready in case of emergency, it was full of supplies I will need in a survival situation. As for school supplies, I bring one clean notebook and a pen.

"Saeko, let's go." I stood up and looked back toward Saeko, she sat at the back of our room.

She also stood up and grabbed her bokuto (wooden sword) before we walked out together. Just outside the room, we saw the students rushing down the stairs, some are already trampled on, possibly dead.

"Idiots..." I shook my head. In case of chaos like what just happened, stairs and entrances are most prone to such accidents. It's better to look for alternative pathways that people wouldn't think of in an emergency, i.e, those that are farther than the main entrance of a structure or building.

"Let's go pass by the nurse's office and then go toward the administrative office, we'll exit that way," I said. I already memorize the layout of our school and made escape routes. I even tested them out at night by sneaking here. Not once have I been captured by the night guards.

"Seems like you already planned it all out," Saeko said. I just smiled in return without replying.

We started walking toward the planned route. The hallways we walked on were empty since all students headed towards the main stairs for the exit. Our room was on the third floor though so we needed to go down the stairs still.

The stairs we used to go down were the metal stairs beside the building, which connects to the second floor. I wonder though what they thought why didn't they just build stairs that reached the ground floor?

My thoughts were, however, interrupted as we saw the chaos that is happening on the campus grounds and outside. People were biting off other people's flesh. Blood was dripping down their mouths with flesh still stuck between their teeth, they look exactly like...

"...Zombies"

"What's happening—?"

I got out of my daze quickly and glanced at Saeko. "It seems the world we know has ended."

"What do you mean?"

"Just wait a bit more, you'll see the reality," I said before proceeding on walking. When we reached the second floor, I peeked through the hallways and sure enough, some student zombies are already there, roaming.

I gently put down my backpack and took out some tactical gloves used by the military. Then I glanced at Saeko before softly saying, "Be ready for a fight."

She was momentarily confused before peeking out the corner and nodding. It seems she now knew why I said those earlier.

From my backpack, I took out a tactical spear. It was disassembled into smaller parts currently. I then assembled each before forming an almost two-meter metal spear.

"I'm ready," I said to her. She nodded and we proceeded to the hallway. Our steps attracted their attention and zombies rushed at us.

I glanced at Saeko and nodded. When we were near some zombies, I plunged my spear straight into its head. It took a moment before it stopped moving, as expected, the head is the way.

I pulled back my spear and saw Saeko bashing a zombie's head. I saw there were still a few left in the hallway. I rushed toward the nearest target and thrust my spear toward its head. After which I quickly took a step back so I wouldn't be overwhelmed by their numbers.

I then saw Saeko passing by me when I stepped back and whacked another target with her bokuto. Good, we can alternate between attacks!

I followed up with another thrust to the head then she followed up. And with this routine, we cleared out the zombies roaming in this hallway. There will be many of them downstairs since that's where most students ran.

"Let's proceed," I started walking with Saeko following me closely. This hallway was just a small wing in our building. The school clinic is ahead of this. We walked for a bit before we turned to another corner, it was the main hallway of the second floor.

"What a pain..." I muttered. There, in the hallway were plenty of zombies clamoring about. But at least we've temporarily done the first rule.

First Rule: Survive – Before you can even do other things, at the start of an apocalypse, do everything to survive. If you didn't survive then you become a fellow zombie, perhaps this choice isn't that bad. At least you will not experience the hell that will follow, living in a post-apocalyptic world.

I can already imagine what will happen after this outbreak and it will be truly hell on earth. Humanity's hidden evils will surface and even demons will pale at what humans can do in these desperate times. Even after all that thought, why can't I stop myself from grinning?
