Chương 4: Fight on first day

The first day at Valewood Academy had been nothing short of overwhelming for Yukio and Kai. Three classes in, including a particularly intense introduction to magic—a power reserved for vampires—had left them both exhausted and frustrated. They were eager for a break, hoping the canteen would offer some respite from the challenging morning.

"Man, I knew this place was going to be tough, but magic?" Yukio shook his head as they made their way through the crowded hallways. "It's like being shown the best toy in the world and being told you can't play with it."

Kai, usually the more easygoing of the two, nodded in agreement. "Yeah, and the way that instructor looked at us when we asked questions... It's like he was ready to kick us out just for being curious."

The two friends navigated the busy corridors, heading toward the canteen. The atmosphere at Valewood was electric—students were buzzing about their first day, discussing the new challenges, making friends, and, for some, establishing rivalries. The academy, with its majestic spires and sprawling grounds, was the ultimate battleground for the best and brightest of both the human and vampire worlds.

As Yukio and Kai approached the canteen, a large, bustling hall filled with long tables and food stalls offering a variety of cuisines, they spotted a familiar group near the entrance. It was the same group of vampire students who had been giving them trouble earlier in the day, led by the tall, arrogant boy with slicked-back black hair and piercing blue eyes.

As the two friends walked closer, the vampire boy stepped forward, blocking their path with a smirk. "Well, look who it is," he sneered. "The humans who think they belong here. How was your little magic class? Did you enjoy watching while the real students did all the work?"

Kai felt his temper rising but did his best to stay calm. "We're here to learn, just like everyone else. What's your problem?"

The vampire boy's smirk widened as he looked down at Kai. "Problem? No, no problem at all. I'm just curious how long you think you'll last before you realize you're out of your depth."

Yukio, sensing the growing tension, tried to defuse the situation. "We're not looking for trouble. Just let us through."

The vampire's smirk turned into a sneer as he leaned in closer to Yukio. "That's the thing, human. You think you can just walk in here and pretend to be on our level? Let me give you a reality check: you're not."

Kai's patience finally snapped. He stepped forward, his fists clenched. "Maybe it's time someone taught you that strength isn't just about who can throw the first punch."

The vampire boy's eyes narrowed, a flicker of anger crossing his face. "You want to test that theory, human?"

Before Kai could respond, the vampire shoved him back, sending him stumbling into Yukio.

"Watch it!" Yukio warned, catching Kai before he could fall.

But the situation had already escalated beyond words. Kai, regaining his balance, took a deep breath and stepped forward again, his anger barely contained. "You're going to regret that."

The vampire boy's eyes flashed with a mix of amusement and anger. He lunged at Kai, his movements a blur as he threw a punch aimed at Kai's face. Kai managed to block the blow, but the force of it sent him reeling. The vampire was strong—too strong.

Yukio, seeing Kai in trouble, tried to step in, but was immediately intercepted by the blonde vampire girl from earlier. She moved with blinding speed, grabbing his arm and twisting it behind his back with a strength that made him gasp in pain.

"Stay out of this," she hissed, her voice cold and menacing. "This is between them."

Yukio struggled against her grip, but she was too strong. He could only watch as Kai fought to hold his own against the vampire boy, who was clearly relishing the opportunity to put a human in his place.

Kai was on the defensive, blocking the vampire's rapid attacks as best he could, but it was clear he was outmatched. The vampire boy's blows came fast and hard, each one pushing Kai closer to his limit. The other vampire students watched with amusement, clearly enjoying the spectacle.

A crowd of students had begun to gather around the fight, murmuring among themselves as they watched the confrontation unfold.

"Is that a human fighting a vampire?"

"They're going to get themselves killed."

"This is going to end badly."

Kai, breathing heavily, managed to dodge another punch and countered with a strike to the vampire's side. The vampire boy grunted but didn't back down. Instead, he snarled and grabbed Kai by the collar, lifting him off his feet and slamming him against the wall.

"You're out of your league, human," the vampire growled, his eyes glowing with anger.

Yukio, seeing his friend in danger, struggled harder against the blonde vampire girl's grip. "Let him go!"

The girl's grip tightened, making Yukio wince in pain. "Why should we? He asked for this."

Kai, still pinned against the wall, was running out of options. The vampire boy's strength was overwhelming, and his taunts were starting to wear him down. But Kai wasn't ready to give up. He brought his knee up, striking the vampire in the stomach. The vampire boy staggered back, surprised by the force of the blow, giving Kai a moment to catch his breath.

But the reprieve was short-lived. The vampire recovered quickly, his eyes narrowing in fury. "You'll pay for that!"

Before the vampire could launch another attack, a commanding voice rang out, silencing the crowd and stopping the vampire in his tracks.

"Enough!"

The students parted, making way for a tall, imposing figure dressed in the distinctive uniform of the Valewood Academy Student Council. He was a human, but there was something about him that immediately commanded respect. His gaze was sharp, his expression unreadable as he stepped forward, placing himself between Kai and the vampire boy.

"What's going on here?" the student council member demanded, his voice calm but filled with authority.

The vampire boy, still seething with anger, hesitated before responding. "This human thought he could challenge me. I was just teaching him a lesson."

The student council member's gaze shifted to Kai, who was still catching his breath, and then to Yukio, who was still held by the blonde vampire girl. "Release him," he ordered.

The blonde vampire girl glared at the council member but reluctantly let go of Yukio's arm. Yukio quickly moved to stand beside Kai, his eyes never leaving the vampire boy.

The council member looked back at the vampire boy, his expression stern. "This is a place of learning, not a battlefield. We don't tolerate this kind of behavior here, from anyone. If you want to prove your strength, do it in the training grounds, not by bullying others."

The vampire boy's jaw clenched, but he didn't argue. He knew better than to challenge a member of the student council, especially one with as much influence as this one. With a final glare at Kai and Yukio, he stepped back, lowering his fists.

Kai, still breathing heavily, felt the adrenaline begin to fade, replaced by the dull ache of his bruises. He had put up a fight, but he knew when he was beaten. "I'm done," he said quietly, raising his hands in surrender. "This isn't worth it."

The student council member nodded approvingly, then turned back to the vampire boy. "Consider this your first and only warning. If I catch you causing trouble like this again, there will be consequences. Do I make myself clear?"

The vampire boy scowled but nodded. "Crystal."

"Good," the council member said, his voice firm. "Now, everyone else, clear out. This show is over."

The crowd began to disperse, students murmuring among themselves as they returned to their previous activities. The tension in the air slowly dissipated, though Yukio and Kai could still feel the eyes of the other students on them.

As the vampire students retreated, the council member turned to Kai and Yukio, his expression softening slightly. "Are you two alright?"

Kai nodded, though he was clearly still shaken. "Yeah, thanks. I didn't mean for it to go that far.""

Yukio rubbed his sore arm, wincing slightly. "We appreciate you stepping in."

The council member gave them a small, reassuring smile. "That's what I'm here for. Just be careful from now on. This place is full of challenges, and not all of them come from the classroom."

Kai and Yukio nodded, grateful for the intervention but also keenly aware of the reality they were now facing. Valewood Academy was a place of opportunity, but it was also a place where old prejudices and tensions simmered just below the surface.

The council member gave them one last nod before turning and walking away, leaving Kai and Yukio alone in the aftermath of the confrontation.

Yukio sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Well, that could have gone better."

Kai managed a weak chuckle. "Yeah, but at least we didn't get completely flattened. Thanks for jumping in back there."

Yukio shrugged, a small smile tugging at his lips. "What are friends for?"

As they turned to finally head into the canteen, both boys knew that the first day at Valewood had only just begun to reveal the challenges ahead. They had survived their first real test, but it was clear that the path forward would be anything but easy. Yet, despite the bruises and the tension, they felt a renewed determination to prove themselves—not just to the vampires who looked down on them, but to themselves as well.

The day had been rough, but they weren't backing down. This was just the beginning.
