Lami noticed Seren's ocean-blue eyes flickering toward Jack, who was being held like a baby.
'Maybe not so crude after all.'
Jack, irresistibly cute and incredibly affectionate, rarely left ving Lami's side.
Unless Lumia was there of course.
The black kitten loved getting cuddled and would sleep on Lami's lap whenever he had the chance to do so.
"Lucian just arrived, I think he got lost," Lumia said with a genuine smile on her face Then she seemed to notice Lami's tattoo but didn't say anything.
"...So how did he find the room?" Lami asked. It would be almost impossible for him to find it himself.
"Mateo brought him here," Lumia said, walking to the living room which was connected to the kitchen.
Seren and Lami followed Lumia closely. Lami observed the suite with keen eyes, it would be the same as his future home after all.
All suites had the same layout, there was a door opening to a personal training hall, intricately filled with training devices, a dummy, and an empty area.
Lami knew the plates covering the room were durable up to Keeper-ranked attacks.
All knowledge was from the databook about the academy, Lami didn't want to ask to take a look around in her suite in his first time here.
The living room was spacious, with a large glass window occupying the right side. The heavy red velvet curtains were closed as it was almost dark outside.
An oval coffee table stood at the room's center.
On the left, there was a small opening leading to the kitchen where Lucian was working and on the opposite side of Lami there was another door, leading to Lumia's bedroom.
Lami observed the room—it was spotless, contrary to his expectations of some mess.
Soon, his eyes locked on two figures that came out of the kitchen.
One of them was Mateo and the other one was Ivy. Mateo wore a sly smile, while Ivy looked as irritated as ever."
Her irritated expression, however, shattered the moment she spotted Lami, disgusted look took place in its stead.
'Why does she look at me like that?'
"Hi, Mateo and Emm... Ivy," he said, almost mentioning a name he shouldn't have.
"..."
"....Hey, why are you looking at me like that?" he asked Ivy who ferociously stared at Lami.
"...What?"
"...Don't think I haven't noticed you looking at me with some ill intent all the time. …Is it because I called you Emma—"
"No," Ivy interrupted, cutting him off. "I can't stand you—you smell like danger.
Lami snorted.
Everyone's eyes were on Lami and Ivy, except for Lucian—he was cooking.
Quite literally.
"...You could've just asked me what perfume I'm wearing. I don't gatekeep."
"...."
"...I am quite a likable guy, look I have a cat," Lami voiced, pointing at the innocent Jack.
But rest assured, he wouldn't let this feral woman place her hands on the innocent kitten, not even if he was paid for it.
The only reason that he had accepted to use Jack as a 'bribe' was his seeing the genuine care in Lumia.
'Thinking about it, she would probably still accept us to come in here.'
"I'm not good with cats," Ivy retorted.
Lami sighed with relief.
"Good."
"What!?"
"Nothing, nothing. You have temperament issues you know that right?" Lami said, sighing once again.
Interacting with Elliot and Ivy on the same day. It was a torture.
"Are you working as a researcher?" Lami asked, she was ranked second in the theoretical test after all.
Working as a student researcher offered numerous advantages.
The students would gain access to state-of-the-art technologies and laboratories. They would be supported by the academy administration, being funded for their projects as much as it was needed.
And lastly, they would get mentorship as well as their full support from renowned, famous professors.
It was an alluring position, yet Lami wouldn't gain anything from it.
He needed strength.
"....I am," Ivy answered, weighing the question. "You are too, right?"
"No."
"....W-Why?"
A shocked expression crept on Ivy's face.
"I don't feel like it," Lami shrugged.
"Haa!? You got the first placement for nothing?!"
"Nah—I got a discount. I wouldn't want to finance my studies—I hate debts."
"....."
Ivy pursed her lips, not a word escaping. She was devastated, but Lami didn't mind her as he turned his gaze to others.
Mateo sat on the sofa, disinterested, his eyes locked on the empty wall, while Lumia tried handing Jack to Seren with Jack trying his best to not leave her arms.
No one seemed to care about Ivy's needless banter. However, a lingering sense of unease hung in the air, keeping everyone uncomfortable.
'Let's check Lucian,' Lami thought, walking to the kitchen.
However, Lumia stopped him. "He locked the door."
"So, what're we doing then?" Lami asked. "The air is tense you know."
Lumia gave her an agreeing look.
"Let's play games," Mateo suggested, still scrolling his phone. "How about we play—"
He couldn't finish his sentence as his head snapped towards Lami.
"You dueled Elliot?" he asked, surprise etched on his face.
Nodding, Lami could feel everyone's attention turning to him.
"What of it?" he said nonchalantly before a daunting realization struck. "Wait! Don't tell me—"
