Chapter 55: Society
"The whole 'will they, won't they' loop? Yeah, that's the most annoying trope in the romance/drama genre," I said firmly.
"No, what? No. Isn't the most annoying trope NTR in that genre?" Alexandra replied.
"I don't consider that a trope."
"A genre, then?" Alexandra asked.
"I hate NTR with a passion, and I deny its existence," I replied stoically.
"That's good... Anyway, no. What did you mean by 'we can't go back'?" Alexandra said, pushing me back to the real topic.
"Yeah," I took a deep breath before continuing, "I mean, I looked at you in a very, very slight romantic way, and I was sort of looking forward to seeing you today, so…" I spoke while scratching the back of my head.
"So?"
"So…"
"You have to say it, you know?" Alexandra stated.
"I think I like you, and keeping my—no, our job in mind, I'm gonna be honest. I don't think I'll ever be able to step into a relationship, but..." I paused when Alexandra cut me off.
"I kinda like you too, and with what you said about our job, I... It's gonna take me a while to process all of this. Like, can I even be okay with having a boyfriend who's going to sleep with other women on camera? And will you even be okay with having a girlfriend who sleeps with other men on camera?" Alexandra said seriously.
I could only bite my tongue at that. I didn't really have to worry about her sleeping with anyone else. Gotta thank the system for that.
"Yeah, I understand," I replied, pretending to think deeply about what she had said.
She just nodded and, after releasing a small huff, said, "Now, let's go back, shall we?"
"Yeah."
We walked back together in awkward silence. Sweat formed on my forehead because of our previous talk, but I'd say it all went fine. I mean, she didn't reject me outright, so that's a win.
In the waiting room, Tanith and Ai were talking to the guy behind the screen. We couldn't make out what they were discussing, but when Jonah came out with a clipboard, we had a general idea.
"I'll leave you guys to it then," I said.
We bid our goodbyes.
Tanith leaned in and whispered into my ear, "I'll call you," in the most sultry voice.
Well, maybe it's just me who gets turned on by that slightly raspy female voice, but it sent shivers down my spine.
I sat in the driver's seat, wondering about everything that had happened. I'd completed my second shoot.
One small step for the porn industry, two big boners for me.
Just as I started the car, there was a knock on my window.
Looking out, I saw Jonah, smiling with her head tilted.
I opened the door to the passenger seat, and without a word, she climbed in and closed the door.
I slowly nodded. "Why are you here?"
"You're dropping me at my place. It's not that far," Jonah replied innocently.
"And what about Alexandra and the others?" I asked.
"I left them in capable hands," she replied proudly.
"Uh-huh," I said with a nod and started the car. "Where to?"
"My place."
"Which is where?"
She pulled out her phone and opened Koogle Maps, showing me her home was just ten minutes away.
On the road, Jonah let her light pink hair down and leaned back in the seat with a sigh.
"You alright?" I asked as I saw her looking at me with unfocused eyes.
"No, but I believe you should know—it's not easy, what you're getting into."
"I know that."
"You also know how much disdain you'll get from society?"
"Yes, I do."
She sighed. "You know, the place I live is where all the prostitutes and famous porn stars live."
"For real?"
"Do you know why we have to live together?"
"Society?"
"Yes," she sighed again. "I'm sorry, I know you're an adult and perfectly capable of making your own decisions, but I just don't want you to make the same mistakes I made."
I only nodded at what she said.
"I've seen people fail. And if you fail here, there's almost nowhere to go back to. Even society will reject you." She lightly ran her fingers through her hair. "I know I might come off as annoying, but I just want what's best for you. It's going to be hard, but never be afraid to ask for help. Always know there are people standing behind you. I've seen successful people break down, and what breaks them most of the time is isolation. They don't ask for help and think they have nowhere to go. So please, know that you can always call me, Claire, or even your friends whenever you need help," Jonah explained.
A/N:
Alright, so I know some people were mildly annoyed by the last chapter, and rightfully so. But I want you to know that the MC isn't some gigachad (yet); he's just an average nerd with almost zero romantic experience. Most of his knowledge about romance comes from fictional stuff, so that definitely influences the decisions he's making.
TL;DR: It'll take him some time to 'grow.'
