Chương 26: The Goblin-wolf gambit (4)

The scent of human blood lingered, faint but undeniable, threading through the chilling night air like a whispered promise of vengeance. A fire sparked deep within the Alpha's mind—a cold fury tempered by relentless instinct and years spent leading his pack through the darkest territories. His first youngling had fallen, snuffed out by these creatures who concealed themselves behind water and shadows. But now, another of his young had been lost—a second part of his essence extinguished by the hands of Alypos and Marina. A silent promise simmered within him: he would taste their blood and repay each wound tenfold.

Yet a more immediate threat loomed. The Homogoblin Chief stood nearby, its stench of rot and aggression wafting through the air, red eyes glimmering with a cruel intelligence and murderous intent. This was no mere goblin; it held power comparable to that of a Goblin Elder, a formidable foe that would not back down easily. A twisted grin spread across its misshapen face, as if savoring the impending clash. They circled each other, the moonlight casting grotesque shadows on the forest floor while goblins encroached, holding back just enough to watch the confrontation unfold.

The Alpha understood the delicate balance of power in this moment. He knew his strengths and weaknesses—Shadow Slash was his blade, capable of slicing through defenses; Shadow Ball was his hammer, a force of nature that could shatter the resolve of any foe. Each skill was honed for swift, brutal efficiency, yet he was no fool; he understood the limits of raw power. This Homogoblin Chief would not flee; it desired dominance, and the Alpha's retaliation would be a calculated dance of violence.

With a deep, primal growl, the Alpha unleashed his oppressive presence—the pressure that warped the world around him, bending it to his will. The force rippled through the grove, causing the Homogoblin Chief to stagger backward, uncertainty flickering across its grotesque features. Seizing the moment, the Alpha lunged, a blur of darkness erupting into the open. He became a lethal shadow against the dimness of the forest, striking with unyielding fury.

The Homogoblin Chief barely dodged, but not without consequence; the Alpha's Shadow Slash tore into the earth, sending dirt and grass flying. The ground cracked under the force of the attack, a testament to his raw power. Yet, the chief was quick—more cunning than he had anticipated. It retaliated with a savage swipe, claws gleaming in the pale moonlight. The two figures clashed in a brutal exchange, the sound of claws scraping against skin echoing through the night. The Alpha's every movement was coldly methodical, a dance learned through years of survival.

"Come on, you beast!" the Homogoblin Chief spat, its voice a mix of anger and anticipation. It charged forward, claws poised to strike. A sense of exhilaration washed over the Alpha; he reveled in the violence, in the thrill of the hunt.

As the battle raged on, the scent of blood thickened in the air—a reminder of what had been lost. The Alpha's younglings, vulnerable and innocent, were no match for the cunning of humans armed with water and shadows. The chaos spiraled into a visceral frenzy as Alypos and Marina emerged from the depths of the forest, striking with a precision that left the Alpha momentarily stunned.

Before he could react, a scream pierced the night—the wretched cry of one of his younglings, silenced by the humans' merciless assault. Rage ignited within him, cold and consuming. The loss of another youngling shattered his focus, a primal roar escaping him as he disregarded the wounded Homogoblin Chief, plunging headlong into the fray.

Alypos and Marina were not prepared for the Alpha's onslaught. He moved like a shadow, slipping into Stealth, and lunged at them, a blur of darkness and fury. In an instant, he was upon them, his claws striking true. The surprise in their eyes was fleeting, their confidence crumbling as his talons tore through flesh, seriously wounding both of them. They hadn't sensed his presence—it all happened in the blink of an eye.

Alypos staggered back, clutching his side as crimson blood oozed between his fingers. Marina, her face pale, struggled to regain her composure. Panic flashed in her eyes as they realized the true danger before them.

"Hold him!" Alypos shouted, his voice strained but commanding. Summoning his will, he conjured water tendrils that lashed out, wrapping around the Alpha with surprising strength. The tendrils glimmered in the moonlight, shimmering like liquid sapphire as they held the beast in place, locking him down with a vice-like grip.

To the Alpha's surprise, the Homogoblin Chief roared in defiance, finally managing to land an attack of its own. A jagged claw sliced through the air, striking the Alpha and ripping into his flank. Pain lanced through him, momentarily halting his ferocity.

The Alpha's gaze darkened as he fought against the tendrils constricting him. His instinct to kill was ignited once more, rage flooding his senses. The humans had dared to strike him, to wound him—he would make them pay.

With a final surge of will, Alypos called upon the water tendrils once more, this time to lift both himself and Marina off the ground. They shot backward, propelled by the liquid force, narrowly escaping the Alpha's wrath and the Homogoblin Chief's fury.

'Cowards!' the Alpha howled, frustration and rage echoing through the trees as the humans slipped away like phantoms into the night. 'You will pay for this!'
