"You wanna tell me why there's been a creepy smile on your face since I came for you?" Zara asks and the smile I've been trying to hide widens, coming out to play for all to see as we walk the streets of the kingdom in this cool evening.
She came immediately it was dusk and although I didn't want to leave the calm serene environment of the library that's best for reading, I had to come with her so she doesn't get in trouble with Sean again.
"I'm just really happy," i confess, unable to hide my joy, "I really learnt a lot today and I feel like a bird let out of its cage to play just a little."
"I hope you didn't fly too far." she says and I scoff. Typical Zara. Ofcourse she's going to worry that I know too much leaving me to wonder what exactly "too much" means.
"What book is this?" She asks and looks at the cover, reading the title out loud, "PSYCHICISM. You're learning about our powers?"
"Yes I am," I respond smiling, "and I've learnt quite a lot."
"Care to share a few?"
"Sure," I willingly agree, "I learnt every single one of you is born with a power and no matter how small or insignificant, it's still power. At birth, no one really knows what the child posseses but as they grow, they begin to discover and develop their powers."
"Nice," she commends and I nod, "anything else?"
"Well, I'm still reading but ofcourse there's more. As a person grows older, their powers grow even stronger but a sick person can't fully maximize their potentials and also, when you grow old and frail, your powers grow old and frail as well."
"And what types of powers do we have?" She asks.
"I haven't read that part yet, but I'm getting to it."
"Huh?" She looks at me with a straight face but a raised brow. "Are you a slow reader or you read something else before starting this one?"
Oh my. She knows I'm not a slow reader and I can't tell her that I was discussing with Jana more than half the time I was at the library. She'd definitely ask what we talked about and that's even more restricted than a crime scene.
"I er - ," I start to say but she raised her hand signalling for me to keep shut and stops walking, looking around still with a straight face but searching eyes.
"What's wrong?" I ask lowly already starting to get scared. What did she notice? Why are we stopping and what is she looking for?
"Someone's been following us." She says and I hold the book closer to my chest as my palms and pits start to get sweaty.
"Not someone," she says again and stands in front of me with her arms spread, trying to protect me, "people. I can feel five pairs of eyes. Five people are watching us right now."
"W-what are we going to do?" I ask in a rush, my heart pounding and knees shaky. It's now I notice how empty the street has been. It's been quite a walk since I last saw anyone.
"Let's run Zara," I say hurriedly, "or better still teleport."
"No!" She responds firmly, "I want to see who these cowards are. Show your face!" She yells the last part and I get even more scared. How can she fight off five people alone!
"Are you out of your -,"
"Duck!" She cuts me off loudly and jumps on me before my brain can process what she just said.
We both fall to the ground with she over me and I scrape my elbow on the hard rough ground but a scraped elbow becomes the least of my problems as I see an arrow in Zara's arm.
"Zara!" I shout and try to push her off me so I can help her but she stays put, covering me.
"You're hurt Zara let me help me."
"No," she reaches for the arrow and pulls it out from her swiftly, blood splattering on the ground from the action and my eyes go wide. How did she just remove it without a single flinch?
"I need you to do just one thing right now and I mean it," she says with a tone that shows she's dead serious and I gulp down the lump that formed in my throat, "RUN!!!!" She screams and stands up from me immediately but I stay frozen on the ground as I see five burly men dressed in black capes that has the head of a dragon printed on it. A large red dragon head spitting green fire. She stands, ready to fight them and they also stand with weapons in their hands. Two with large heavy looking axes, one with a bow and arrow, another with a sword and the last one with a long sharp spear.
"Dragullar." Zara says calmly to them and I try to stand up and run but the great fear coursing through my bones have made them too weak to move, "what do you guys want?"
"I'm very sure you're aware of that already, Zara."
The man in the middle with a bow and arrow says in strange accent, pronouncing every R with emphasis.
"You'll have to go through me first, Dralor." She says balling her fists, ready to fight.
"Run now Crystal!" She says and I immediately stand up, I can't run towards the palace because they're in the way so I run back towards the library. Zara's scream stops me dead in my tracks as I turn to look at her with another arrow in her thigh but the guy with a sword is already on the ground, bleeding from his gut.
"Hey!" I hear someone call out to me in a harsh whisper and I look away from Zara to my side immediately, holding my book really tightly to my chest and backing away.
"It's me!" The person says again and brings their head into the light from the shadows in the corner of the street. I immediately recognise the light brown hair and green eyes, he's the same guy I met at the library hours ago.
"Come with me," he says and stretches out his hand, "we have to run!"
I look at his hand and back at Zara who has already brought down all the five men but new men are coming out from the shadows. Another set of five men against her and she wants me to run away. I can't possibly leave her out here to die! I need to help her.
"There's nothing you can do for her asides run Crystal." The man says stretching his hand further out for me to take, "if you're caught, all her efforts would be futile so come with me, we need to go now!". The urgency in his voice is really demanding but I don't know if I can trust him. For all I know he could be part of the people after me and following him right now would be like walking right into the lion's den, or the dragons cave in this case.
"And why should I trust you?" I ask and he sighs frustratedly.
"Would you rather be captured by those strange men or stand here and keep questioning me?" He responds harshly, "I promise no harm would come to you if you can just take my hand!"
His eyes is so sincere and the fear in my pounding heart increases once I see Zara fighting off three men and one is running towards my direction. I immediately take his hand as the man runs closer. I guess I just have to take this risk in order to save my life. It's either him or them and now, I've chosen him. I hope I chose life.
God bless ya'll. thanks for reading. ❤️
