"Father."
Gaius was in his room. After a long and exhausting day filled with meetings and reviews, he was slightly annoyed. But for his daughter, he had all the time in the world.
"Minerva. Did you find that boy?"
Minerva sighed and said,
"No. The spies have been working day and night, but there has been no sign of him."
He stood up from his seat and approached her. He proceeded to place his hand on her head and said,
"Are you here to give me back my spies?"
"Yes. They are an important asset to the throne. I shouldn't keep them preoccupied for too long."
She took out a scroll and handed it to Gaius.
"What is this?"
Minerva smiled and said,
"This is a report on your spies. Over the last few weeks, I have been observing and classifying them according to their merit."
He opened the scroll. It had heaps of personal information on his informants and spies.
"You can use them as you wish."
"Nicely done."
He praised his daughter.
"It was my duty. A thorough check is necessary to avoid mishaps like the last incident."
He closed the scroll.
"Minerva, what do you think about Nero?"
She was surprised. The question came out of nowhere.
"He is most suited to the throne."
She was not well acquainted with Nero. They were not close, and therefore they didn't talk much. But even she knew that other than her father, Nero was the only person who deserved the throne. He was a skilled negotiator, was adored by the populace, and was ruthless in his decisions.
"Right."
Gaius closed his eyes.
"Did I say something wrong?"
He sighed and said,
"No."
He sat back down on his bed and said,
"I must rest now."
Minerva bowed down once in respect and left.
"The most suited to the throne..."
He looked at the lamp on his desk.
"I can only hope."
-------------------------------------------
Melida looked at the letter in front of her. She had only read it some time ago.
"So they met Octavia."
Her expression was serious. If Gaius came to know about Vincent, even she wasn't confident that she could hold him back.
"Anna, ask him to come and meet me."
"What about Vincent?"
"He won't dare to approach Vincent."
Anna nodded and left.
"What a chaotic life he is going to lead."
There was a knock on the door.
"Miss Melida, the prince is here."
She raised her head and looked at Anna. As Anna entered the room, behind him were the two nobles. The prince and his fiance.
"You were waiting outside."
"We had disguises on."
Nero showed her the mask in his hand.
"Nice of you both to surprise me like this. Tell me, what do you want to talk about?"
Octavia was about to sit on one of the chairs. Melida looked at her and said,
"I didn't tell you to sit. State the reason for your visit."
Nero smiled. He held Octavia's hand and said,
"I want to buy him off you."
Melida stared at Nero for a second. Octavia was expecting her to burst out at his outrageous demand.
But she didn't get angry. She smiled.
"You can leave. And also, visit the aristocrat's school on your way. You have a lot to learn about diplomacy."
"Didn't you read my letter?"
She took the letter placed on the table and tore it down.
"I didn't."
Nero was outraged.
"Nobody disrespects the royalty like this and gets away."
He took out his rapier. Anna was about to take out her sword, but Melida raised her hand.
"Unfortunately for you, prince. I can get away. I can also kill you right now, and your father will have to fight wars to hunt me down. So if I were you, I would mind my words."
Her calm voice sent a shiver down his spine. She was not kidding.
"Put your rapier inside, and leave."
Nero gritted his teeth.
"I will inform of his existence to father."
She smiled and said,
"Be my guest. But I doubt that your father and his forces will be able to catch us. Not only that, I will use the kid as a bargaining chip to gain power and work against the kingdom with any one of your enemies. I am sure that they will be more than happy to receive me."
Nero was flabbergasted. There was no winning against her.
"I understand now why your father refuses to pass his throne. The future doesn't look bright."
A direct hit. Nero tried to calm himself down.
"Don't even think about Vincent until you become the king. If we are left alone, I might form an alliance with Malen in the future."
She looked at Anna and said,
"Anna, Escort them out."
He looked at her and said,
"This isn't over."
Nero and Octavia turned around and left. Anna followed and saw to it that they left the guild.
She returned to Melida's office. Melida gathered the torn letter and turned it into ash.
"Ask the family to send someone. You will be tasked with protecting Vincent at all times."
Anna nodded.
"If anyone tries to attack Vincent, capture them and bring them to me."
She had repelled Nero for now.
-----------------------------------------------
"Benedict."
Nero left Octavia back at the palace and went straight for the Pope's residence.
"Nero?"
He opened the door. Nero's expression was of extreme anger.
"How long will it take?"
Benedict frowned.
"Are you talking about the..."
"Yes. How long with the preparation take?"
"We can get started now, but we will require a lot of funds."
Nero clenched his fist. He had access to the royal coffers.
"I will take care of that. When will we execute the plan?"
"In 3 days."
Nero turned around and left.
Benedict saw his back as he was leaving.
"May the goddess give him peace."
He joined his hands and prayed.
Nero reached his room. Attilius was keeping guard outside.
"The time for your revenge is near. Be prepared."
Attilius bowed down to him. Nero entered his room and shut the door.
