Chương 8: Chapter 8

"Sophia, it's been a week since I've been unemployed. Did I mention I'm lonely?" Violet complained as she dug her face into the pillow beside her.

"Look Vi, you'll find something but for now I can get you something in my parent's restaurant. And I told you to call sexy Chris and you didn't" Sophia said rubbing her back.

"Jesus no!" Her face emerged from the pillow

"Your cousin would keep trying to ask me out and I am running out of ways to tell him no. There are only so many ways you can tell an 11-year-old no. As for Chris, I don't think that is something I'll be doing ever. That is the most embarrassed I've ever been"

"He's not that bad, he's just trying to joke around. And as for Chris remember he was nice enough to find you and despite your extremely awful experience would like to get to know you"

"I know but he is so cute when he tries. Look I've got bigger problems anyways and did I mention my rent is almost due?"

"Look, just take the goddamn job and forget my cousin. What a shame, I liked sexy Chris. I mean look at that man's face and body. He is way better-looking than Matt. And I didn't even really like Matt." She stood and walked to the fridge and opened it. "I need a drink"

"Don't you have to be at work soon? Don't you think drinking before is a bad idea for a nurse? You know dealing with needles and all and you didn't like Matt?"

"Nope. I just always had this inkling he wasn't right for you. But you were happy and that was all that mattered" She pulled a glass out of the cabinet and poured herself some wine. "By the way, this drink gives me the kick in the balls so I can go rub Mr. Heckles his ash cream in areas that make him feel good".Violet giggled. Sophia always knew how to lighten the mood. In the worst situations.

"Plus, girl, your fridge is empty. You have got to get some groceries" She walked back to the couch and sat beside her again.

"Yeah, so you'd come and finish everything in it right?"

"You get me every time" She smiled "In the meantime, I've got to get going or I'm going to have to be late for my shift at the hospital" She stood up and picked up her shoes, and started to put them on.

"Yeah and I can drop you off because I have to get dinner, I can't afford to cook right now. And maybe get a few things from the store" . Violet slipped into some slippers and searched for her keys.

"And would it kill you to clean?" Sophia rolled her eyes.

"I'm sad I get a free pass to be dirty"

"Wait, are you going to the grocery store looking like that?" Sophia pointed at her sweats and large shirt "Look at your hair"

"At this point, I don't care. I'm gonna be in and out anyways" .

"Come on Chris. I wanna go to Chucky cheese. I told you your office would be boring"

"Yeah because you're in the boring parts. I'll be done in a moment". Mabel continues to spin in Chris's chair. "Hurry up."

"Okay Okay," He said, distracted. Mabel looked his way. He was on the other side of the desk concentrating on his computer and the papers beside him. She stood up and began to wander around the building. After another thirty minutes, Chris shut his laptop and looked around.

"Mabel?" He stood up and checked the bathroom for her and didn't find her.

"Mabel? Mabel?! Look I'm sorry for keeping you if this is a joke it's not funny at all" He took the stairs down to try and find her. He went to every floor looking for her. He started to get worried.

"Mabel, this game is not funny anymore. Mabel?!" he yelled.

"Over here Chris"

"Where?" He yelled back.

"The shoes Chris. Your office is pretty cool. At least this place". He turned an aisle and found her trying on a pair of Jordans her size.

"You almost gave me a heart attack, are you okay?" He knelt beside her and hugged her.

"I'm fine I'm fine," She said lifting the shoes in awe. "I didn't know they had this in my size"

"I can get it in pink or any other color you want"

"Really?" She squealed. She was so excited.

"Yeah just say the word."

"I want these in pink." She shoved a pair of tiny Jordans in his hands. "And those too" She pointed at a pile of shoes.

"Yes ma'am" He smiled.

"Isn't that Steph Curry?" She asked as she pointed at a cardboard cutout of him.

"Yeah, how do you know him?"

"Well grandma always watches the game with me and she would tell me all the player's names and she liked Steph the most I don't know why though"

Chris smiled knowingly. He knew his mum loved Steph Curry and watched all his games not because he was great at basketball but because according to her he made her feel things.

"So, you like basketball?"

"Yeah, a little. I was gonna try out for the team when I got to elementary school but I still played with my friends back in my old neighborhood at the park. It was fun. Now for the love of God can we go to Chucky cheese, please? I am hungry"

"Yeah sure but on Saturday we'll watch the game together okay?"

"Sure"

Chris remembered the Chuck E cheese place. He remembered it because his dad used to come here with him every Friday after work. One of his best memories of his dad was here.

"Come on Chris, let's get a table while we wait for our food. I've got a great spot" Mabel pulled Chris's hand and he followed her.

"Okay," He chuckled at her attempt to pull him.

She pulled him to the same booth right at the end of the diner his father and he used to eat at and he felt nostalgic.

"If I was good, grandma would let me have some chocolate chip ice cream. Please Chris can we get some ice cream? Please?" She had puppy dog eyes.

"Sure. Anything for you kiddo" His dad always let him have a scoop of chocolate chip whether he was good or not. And when he begged his dad would always say 'Sure. Anything for you kiddo'

"Yes," She exclaimed. Just the same way he would as a kid. Amid his nostalgia, the waiter brought their order.

"Alright let's eat" He smiled at her. He was feeling a lot he didn't want to. Feelings he'd thought he'd buried coming back.

"Can I get you anything else?" the waiter asked when they were done.

"Yes, two scoops of chocolate chip ice cream please please"

"Can I go pee?"

"Okay be real quick okay? Will you be alright by yourself?"

"Yes. I'm six, not three. There's a kid's bathroom here" She smiled and slid out of the booth and walked to the bathroom. Chris followed her with his eyes till she was out of sight and in the bathroom. He looked around the diner. Nothing has changed. He was more surprised that his mum took Mabel here. No doubt for the memories I suppose. Everything about this place reminds him of his father. The waiter came with their desserts.

"You pay over at the counter there," the waiter said.

"Okay thanks," He said.

"Hope you come back again"

"I sure will" He picked up the bag and walked to the counter.

Violet walked out of the store. She looked across the street and there was a Chuck E cheese. She put her groceries in her car and walked across the street to get takeout from there. She pulled the door open and walked to the counter that had the sign that said 'ORDER HERE'

"Welcome to Chuck E cheese, what can I get you?" the girl at the counter asked,

"I'll have a small supreme pizza to go and a coke," She said looking at the menu.

"Sure, coming right up. You'll get your order at the register over there" She pointed and went to the register. She stood waiting until it was her turn while she kept herself distracted with her phone. It was her turn and she moved to the counter and stood waiting for her order. She looked up and standing in the line was Chris. Her eyes widened.

"Ma'am your order?" She turned to the guy at the register.

"Yes, my order" She pulled her card from her wallet and handed it to the cashier. I'm in HIS SHIRT. The shirt I haven't taken off for a week because I haven't showered in a week. This couldn't get any worse.

"Ma'am your card was declined," the cashier said. It got worse.

"What do you mean declined?" She asked the guy.

"I ran it and it declined," He said.

"Please let me," Chris said from nowhere stretching out his card to the cashier who took it all the while keeping his eyes on Violet. She looked back at him.

"Thank you" Violet managed to say.

He was in a blue tailored suit and black sneakers which was a hard look for guys to pull off but he did it flawlessly. Even at this hour of the night it still looked like he had just worn it. He had shaved his beard and he was under brighter lights than the club and even his apartment. His jawline was perfectly outlined and he appeared taller than before. If Violet was to hug him, she would rest comfortably on his chest. His dark brown eyes appeared brighter. Violet could smell his cologne.

His eyes were on his shirt making Violet blush knowingly .

"I like your… slippers" He pointed at her pink slippers with bunnies on top. She looked down at them, grateful he didn't comment about it. She slept every day with that shirt.

"Thanks. I don't know what happened to my card. These banks have issues sometimes. I promise I'll pay you back" She tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear awkwardly.

"That's fine. You don't have to. These things happen." He smiled softly.

"Kids can surely take a while to pee. I'm ready to go" Mabel said once she was beside Chris "Who is she?"

"She is leaving." Violet looked at Mabel and then at Chris. She scoffed while rolling her eyes and shaking her head. She grabbed her bag and walked out of the restaurant.

Chris let the realization sink in "Wait, Violet! Violet!" Chris yelled after her.

Violet ran across the street almost getting hit by a car. She started her car and drove off.
