"This is stupid," Cele grumbled, looking down at the grammar guide provided by Literator Anacleto.

Vin glanced over, surprised that it had taken him so long to complain in the absence of the tutor, before cracking a grin.

"Our fluency in Simonese is vital, you lunkhead - reading and pronunciation. Could you imagine how unlettered we'd seem in front of the ambassadors if we could only ask how they're faring, and nothing beyond that?"

Vin jammed a finger at the page displaying the Simonese letters.

"This is nothing like the Haroman logogram, okay? Each symbol corresponds directly with one of ours."

Cele sighed. "If your father actually believes in the peace treaty he has signed with King Gotthard, why is this necessary?"
